Motorists are warned to be careful of slippery roads this morning, caused by wet areas on the roads freezing overnight. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country.

"Adjust your driving behavior", the KNMI warns. Slow down and keep a safe following distance. "Follow weather reports and warnings." The iciness should melt away by around 10:00 a.m.

Snow lovers in the Netherlands are in for a pleasant surprise tomorrow. Snow is expected for Friday, starting in the southwest of the country around mid-morning, Weeronline reports.

Today will be partly cloudy with some showers, and maybe some wet snow. Afternoon temperatures will range from 2 degrees in the east to 5 degrees along the coast. Though Weeronline warns that the ambient temperatures across the country will feel just below freezing.

This year will go into the weather record books as exceptionally hot, sunny and rainy. The average temperature measured in De Bilt this year is 10.9 degrees, compared to an usual average of 10.1 degrees. That puts 2017 in a shared fourth place in the top 10 list of hottest years ever measured in the Netherlands, Weeronlnie announced on Thursday.

The rest of the week will be cold in the Netherlands, with a chance of wet snow, according to Weerplaza. The weekend will be milder, with a 50/50 chance of rain on New Year's, Weeronline reports.

A low-pressure area is passing almost directly over the Netherlands today, which will result in lots of clouds and rain, according to Weerplaza. On Wednesday night temperatures will drop to 4 or 5 degrees along the coast and to 2 degrees further inland as storms drift into the country from the North Sea.

Foggy weather is again causing flight delays and cancellations at Schiphol airport on Friday. Schiphol warns travelers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Schiphol already reports a few delayed arrivals and departures for Friday. A large number of departures have also been canceled.

"Due to fog, today's flights may be delayed or canceled. Travelers are advised to consult the latest status of their flight via our website, the Schiphol App, or to contact their airline", the airport writes on Twitter.

The ice on the roads should melt away during the course of the morning. 

Friday will be cloudy in many places, especially inland. The coastal areas and the south of the country may see some rain. Afternoon temperatures will range between 3 and 5 degrees, with a moderate wind during the morning and weak in the afternoon.

After heavy snowfall on Monday caused two days of chaos at Dutch airports, most flights are now departing and landing on schedule.

According to the KMNI, the ice on the roads will melt away as temperatures increase during the course of the morning. "Adjust your driving behavior", the institute warns. Drive slowly and keep a safe following distance.

Schiphol airport is still struggling with delayed and canceled flights after Monday's heavy snowfall. The runways have been cleared of snow, so the number of takeoffs and landings at the airport is almost back to normal. But as many stranded passengers of the are still at the airport waiting for an alternative flight, Schiphol is currently very crowded.

Monday's heavy snowfall, and the problems in traffic and productivity it caused, cost the Dutch economy around 35 million euros, according to calculations by the Economic Research Foundation and Statistics Netherlands chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen, BNR reports.

If there is a whole business day in which no work is done in a quarter, like when Christmas falls on a week day, it costs the Netherlands' GDP 0.2 to 0.3 percent of growth, Van Mulligen said to the broadcaster. That amounts to 350 million euros the Netherlands' economy loses out on.

Snowy weather in the Netherlands on Monday resulted in a record number of traffic jams during evening rush hour. At the peak of traffic late in the afternoon, there were around 1,500 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads, according to the ANWB. Taking all roads into account, there was on Monday afternoon.

Maximum temperatures for Tuesday will range between 2 and 5 degrees. The showers will decrease during the afternoon, and there may be some periods of sunshine. 

During evening rush hour, temperatures will drop to freezing. Weeronline warns motorists to be careful of icy and slippery roads.

Meteorological institute KMNI issued a code red alert warning of extremely dangerous weather due to heavy snowfall in the Netherlands. The snow already resulted in the cancellation and delays of many flights at the Dutch airports. Due to heavy snowfall expected across the Netherlands this afternoon, many schools decided to give their students the day off on Monday. These include the 23 secondary schools under the ZAAM foundation in Amsterdam and its surrounds, the 4e Gymnasium in Amsterdam, the Amadeus Lyceum in Vleuten, the Coornhert Gymnasiam in Gouda, and the Wellant College in Alphen aan den Rijn, NU.nl reports.

"An email has just been sent from the board that at 1:00 p.m. te doors will close in all schools of ZAAM", an employee of the Amsterdam-Zuid school community said to NU.nl.
