Hurricane Irma hit the island of Sint Maarten around 12:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dutch time. The hurricane's eye is expected to pass the island between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., NU.nl reports.

According to Weerplaza, the island can expect wind speeds of around 295 kilometers per hour, with even stronger gusts. The hurricane is also accompanied by heavy rains, which can cause flooding problems.

Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba are preparing for Hurricane Irma, which is expected to hit the islands on Tuesday night or during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The storm is increasing in strength and is now considered a hurricane of the fourth category, RTL Nieuws reports.

Meteorological autumn in the Netherlands is starting out cool and partly cloudy with a good chance of some showers, according to Weeronline. From Sunday the weather will turn dryer, sunnier and warmer for a few days, the weather service expects.

Wednesday was a wet and rainy day for the Netherlands. According to Weeronline, between 40 and 45 millimeters of rain fell in the west of Zuid-Holland, the north of Noord-Holland and on the Wadden islands. That's about half of what is usual for the entire month of August.

By Wednesday night Leeuwarden had the most rain, with 52.2 millimeters measured. Places like Grouw and Stavoren also got over 50 millimeters of rain. "Locally the total rainfall can climb up to 60 mm by [Thursday] morning", the weather agency said on Wednesday night.

Tropical weather in the Netherlands on Tuesday sent many people to the water to cool down. This did not work out well for everyone. At least three people drowned while swimming on Tuesday.

A 14-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a pond in the Henri Dunantpark in Eindhoven on Tuesday afternoon. Police divers took his body out of the water around 2:00 p.m. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Today is expected to be the first tropically warm day in the Netherlands since July 19th, according to Weeronline. Temperatures in Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg and the Achterhoek are expected to range between 30 and 32 degrees. 

And with a maximum temperature of around 29 degrees expected in De Bilt, today stands a good chance of breaking the record for the hottest August 29th since temperature measurements started. The previous record dates back to 1930, when 29.3 degrees were measured in De Bilt.

Monday and Tuesday are expected to be hot and sunny across the Netherlands, with temperatures up to 32 degrees on Tuesday, Weeronline predicts. Though by Wednesday, rain is expected to drive the summer weather away for a while.

Monday started out foggy, but temperatures will rise during the course of the day. Maximum temperatures will range from 22 degrees in the north to around 29 degrees in the south of the country.

The first summery weather of the month hit the Netherlands on Wednesday. The nice weather sent many Dutch flocking to the coast, for some swimming and sunbathing before autumn strikes, the Telegraaf reports.

Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg can expect maximum temperatures around 29 degrees today. The northern provinces are somewhat cooler with temperatures ranging between 23 and 25 degrees.

The Netherlands public works department Rijkswaterstaat is already stocking up on salt for the winter season. The first salt shipment, containing 3 million kilograms of salt, will arrive at the Rijkswaterstaat salt warehouse in Raamdonksveer on Tuesday, ANP reports. 

In total the Rijkswaterstaat is supplementing its stockpiles with 75 million kilograms of salt, up to a total of over 200 million kilograms. The salt is stored in four central warehouses and 56 regional support points.

A group of 200 Dutch tourists are among thousands stuck on the Portuguese island of Madeira since Saturday. The flight set to bring the Dutch tourists home couldn't take off from Funchal Airport on Saturday due to heavy winds. An airplane sent to pick up the stranded tourists on Monday tried to land three times in vain, a spokesperson for TUI said to the Telegraaf.

Dozens of flights had to be canceled because the planes couldn't land or takeoff due to the weather. A total of around 6 thousand people are stranded on the island.

The Dutch weather services expect strong winds along the coast this afternoon. Campers and water sporters, like surfers or sailors, are warned to be careful.

The KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning, taking effect from 2:00 p.m. Gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour are expected along the coast. Further inland will also be windy, but Weerplaza doesn't expect it to cause problems there.

Rain gear was the order of the day for the first group of hikers kicking off the third day of the Nijmegen Vierdaagse. On Thursday the hikers were greeted by heavy rainfall and thunder when they started their hike on the Wedren in Nijmegen at 4:00 a.m., according to the Gelderlander.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms will enter the Netherlands from the south this afternoon and spread across the country during the course of the afternoon and evening, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country.

Nijmegen's annual four day hiking event, the Vierdaagse, kicked off on Tuesday morning. The first hikers started their journey at 4:00 a.m. and by 6:30 a.m. over half of the 42,036 participants were on the way, the Volkskrant reports.

This is the 101st edition of the Nijmegen Vierdaagse, which ends in the Nijmegen city center on Friday. Hikers from no less than 67 countries are participating this year. The youngest participant is 11-year-old Maud Molemans from Nijmegen, the oldest is 94-year-old Herman Dubie from Amsterdam. This is the Amsterdam man's 20th Vierdaagse.

People participating in the Nijmegen Vierdaagse hike next week, will have to take high temperatures into account, according to Weeronline. From Sunday, temperatures will rise to tropical highs of above 30 degrees on Wednesday, according to the weather service.

The Nijmegen Vierdaagse is happening between Tuesday and Friday next week. Some of the accompanying parties already start on Saturday.

Bad news for sun lovers - the Netherlands will be cloudy and wet in the coming days. According to Weerplaza, up to 50 millimeters of rain can fall between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon - about the amount usual for two weeks in July.

"That's five large buckets of water per square meter, over 2 thousand baths in one football field or 70 garden swimming pools in one football field", meteorologist Wilfred Janssen put it in perspective for newspaper AD.

Thunderstorms that pulled across the Netherlands on Thursday night caused a number of problems. Lighting strikes resulted in fires in several places, as well as some disruptions to train traffic. Rock band Bløf's concert had to be paused for around 20 minutes due to the weather, NOS reports.

Fires in Tilburg, Zwijndrecht, Weesp, Wijk bij Duurstede and Naarden are all believed to be caused by lightning strikes. Lightning is also believed to be behind a big fire in a pig company in Heeswijk-Dinther, according to Omroep Brabant. Two barns burnt down, killing around 4 thousand sows.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning due to thunderstorms expected to hit the Netherlands later this afternoon. The storms may be accompanied by lighting strikes, hail and strong winds, the KNMI warns.

The weather warning covers all provinces except Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. The thunder storms will hit the southern provinces first and then move northwards across the country. The code yellow warning is effective from 3:00 p.m. until early Friday morning.

Hot air currently causing very high temps in Spain, will move towards the Netherlands during the course of the week, bringing afternoon temperatures of up to 28 degrees with it.

Summer temperatures of up to 33 degrees expected in the Netherlands this week triggered national health institute RIVM to issue a heat warning for most of the Netherlands. The heat warning is in effect for the seven provinces in central and southern Netherlands between Monday and Thursday, NU.nl reports.

Hot weather is in store for the Netherlands this weak, with a heat wave expected for the southern parts of the country, according to weather services Weerplaza and Weeronline. 

Many inland areas of the Netherlands will see temperatures around 30 degrees today. The extreme south may even see their thermometers climb to 33 degrees. Along the coast will be slightly cooler with temperatures around 27 degrees, according to meteorological institute KNMI. If temperatures climb to 30 degrees in De Bilt, today will be the second tropical day of this year. The first was on May 27th.

Afternoon temperatures will range from 23 degrees on the Wadden islands to 30 degrees in the east. Though those hoping for a beautiful summer's day will be disappointed - storms are expected to hit the country this afternoon.

The Netherlands can look forward to mostly pleasant weather this coming week, weather service Weerplaza expects. The week will be mostly sunny with mild to summery temperatures, and only a few showers.

Today will be partly cloudy, with some showers expected for the inland part of the country. Afternoon temperatures will range from 17 to 21 degrees. Tuesday is expected to be dry, but with some clouds inland. The western part of the country will have beautiful, cloudless weather, according to Weerplaza.

The entire country can look forward to a stormy Friday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow storm warning covering the entire Netherlands. The institute warns of strong winds, lightning, hail and large amounts of rain falling in a short time.

The storms will leave the country in a north easterly direction by this afternoon, the KNMI expects. Until then Netherlands residents can look forward to winds between 60 and 70 kilometers per hour and up to 20 mm of rain falling in a short period of time.
