The coldest night of this winter so far is about to hit the Netherlands. Overnight temperatures will drop to between -5 and -8 degrees Celsius, Weeronline expects. The coming days will also have below zero minimums, and maximum temperatures hovering around freezing.

The winter temperatures will last until the weekend, after which it will warm up somewhat, according to meteorological institute KNMI. "Although we certainly can not say that the winter is then over", a spokesperson for the institute said to NU.nl.

The Netherlands has an icy week ahead of it with night time temperatures expected to drop below freezing every night, and maximum temperatures climbing no higher than 3 or 4 degrees Celsius, Weeronline predicts.

Monday starts out mostly cloudy, with morning temperatures hovering around freezing point. The cloud fields will gradually dissipate through the course of the day. Maximum temperatures will range between 1 and 3 degrees.

The coming days will be very cold in the Netherlands with night time temperatures dropping to -5 degrees Celsius, giving good hope to skating enthusiasts. "It depends on several factors, but skating is certainly not inconceivable", Diana Woei, weather-woman at Weerplaza, said to newspaper AD.

Today is Warm Sweater Day in the Netherlands, a day on which environmental organization Klimaatverbond calls on people to turn down the heating and instead wear a warm sweater to stay warm. With this campaign, the organization wants to draw attention to energy saving as a contribution to fighting climate change.

Small actions done by many people can have a major effect, a spokesperson for Klimaatverbond said to RTL Nieuws. "Because if everyone puts the heating one degree lower for one day, that saves the energy of the annual use of three Wadden Islands."

Motorists in the Netherlands can expect a busy morning rush hour due to iciness on the roads. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning. Very cold days are ahead for the country after the weekend, Weerplaza expects. 

Commuters in the eastern parts of the Netherlands will be particularly affected by icy roads, caused by wet sections on the roads freezing overnight and a hail storm, according to the KNMI. The iciness should melt away later in the morning.

Friday and the weekend will be foggy, with occasional sunshine and some showers, meteorological institute KNMI expects.

People almost everywhere in the Netherlands woke up to thick fog on Friday morning. The fog started dissipating during the course of the morning, and should be completely gone by early afternoon, the KNMI expects. A few areas may see some sunshine this afternoon, and there may be some rain inland. Maximum temperatures will rise to around 8 degrees.

Despite an icy start, the Netherlands can expect exceptionally mild temperatures this week. There is even a solid chance that the heat record from 1960 can be broken on Wednesday, meteorologist Brian Verhoeven of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws.

Monday started out frosty in many places, and the rest of the day will hold some showers and maybe even light snowfall in the northeast. But the snow won't last long, according to Verhoeven.

After hurricane-force winds caused chaos at Schiphol on Thursday, the airport's flight schedule is getting back on track. Schiphol ended up canceling 320 flights on Thursday, on Friday 33 cancelations are reported.

Schiphol's website shows 21 canceled arrivals and 12 canceled departures for Friday. 14 departures are delayed at this stage. The arrivals is somewhat more of a mess, with 57 delays reported so far. A large number of flights also arrived earlier than scheduled.

A school bus carrying around 10 children between the ages of 10 and 15 crashed into a tree during stormy weather in Gravenmoer, Noord-Brabant on Thursday. Five children and the bus driver were injured, AD reports.

The extent of the kids' injuries is unclear. The bus driver was seriously injured, according to the newspaper. The bus was transporting kids to a school in Andel.

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Three people were hurt by falling pieces of ceiling at Schiphol Airport outside departure halls 1 and 2 on Thursday, a Schiphol employee confirmed to NOS. The pieces of ceiling were blown loose by hurricane strength winds. 

Departure halls 1 and 2 were evacuated and are closed until further notice, according to the broadcaster. Passengers can check in at departure hall 3.

Hurricane-force winds in the Netherlands forced the shutdown of nearly all train service, all Schiphol air traffic, and several local tram services on Thursday. The NS made the decision to stop the trains as damage reports on the railways and at train stations kept coming in, the NS said.

A western storm drawing over the Netherlands today is causing increasing disruption to flight traffic. So far 268 flights scheduled to arrive or depart from Schiphol Airport have been canceled and there are numerous delays. "Please expect delays for departing flights of up to 30 minutes", the Amsterdam airport warns. "Our flight schedule will be disrupted for the rest of the day."

At this stage 81 departures from Schiphol are delayed. And delays are reported on 220 arrivals, including flights that already landed.

Meteorological institute extended its code orange storm warning to the entire country. Traffic information services are reporting increasing problems on the roads due to accidents and bridges closing due to the strong winds.

The dike between Enkhuizen and Lelystad is currently closed to freight traffic and cars pulling trailers due to the weather. The Oosterscheldekering will be closed to all traffic between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

A code orange weather warning for very strong winds is in effect for all provinces except the northern ones, where a code yellow warning is in place. Road users in Groningen are also warned to beware of icy roads. All forms of traffic will be affected by the storm, with canceled flights, fewer trains, and more traffic.

A western storm will hit the Netherlands on Thursday, bringing with it strong winds. Gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour are expected in the western coastal provinces. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the whole country, starting at 10:00 a.m. and continuing through to 2:00 p.m. A code yellow warning is in effect for the rest of the day.

Winter showers and snow falling over night, combined with low temperatures, mean that the roads may be treacherously icy this morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire Netherlands. 

Motorists are warned to drive carefully this morning. "Adjust your driving behavior", the KNMI says. Slow down and keep a safe following distance. "Follow weather reports and warnings." The iciness is expected to melt away by noon.

The prospect of slippery roads prompted the Dutch national weather service, KNMI, to issue another Code Yellow weather warning. The caution is in effect across the Netherlands from 4 p.m. on Tuesday through noon on Wednesday.

Snow is also possible in the center of the country, and continuing to the east and south. The eastern provinces have the highest likelihood for icy roadways overnight, but with winter showers expected everywhere in the Netherlands drivers were told to be particularly careful.

This week promises to be windy, rainy and stormy, according to weather service Weeronline. With strong winds starting on Monday afternoon, wind and rain expected for Tuesday, and maybe some snow expected for Wednesday, the stormy weather will climax with a big storm on Thursday.

There's an about 80 percent chance that there will be a storm somewhere along the Dutch coast on Monday afternoon, according to Weeronline. A rainy area will cross the country during the afternoon, which could cause extra traffic during evening rush hour.

The national weather agency KNMI issued a Code Yellow weather warning for dense fog on Thursday morning. The warning was still in effect across several Dutch provinces as the morning rush hour began.

“Fog can be treacherous due to its sudden occurrence,” KNMI stated. Visibility was expected to be lower than 200 meters during the warning, in place until 11 a.m. The fog warning covered the entirety of Utrecht, Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland. It also was issued for the Wadden Sea islands.

Strong winds and high seas in the Netherlands on Wednesday forced the closure of two storm surge barriers around Rotterdam and another in Zeeland. The Maeslantkering, said to be one of the three largest moving structures in the world, protects the second largest city in the Netherlands from flooding.

Scheduled for closure at 2:10 p.m., the Maeslantkering had not closed since a late night storm on November 8, 2007. That was the first time a storm triggered its closure since it went operational in an inauguration ceremony led by Queen Beatrix.

Meteorological institute KNMI increased its storm warning for Wednesday from a code yellow to a code orange for the provinces of Noord-Holland, Flevoland, Friesland, and the Wadden islands. Very strong winds up to 130 kilometers are expected.

A code yellow warning is still in effect for the rest of the country.

The storm moving over the Netherlands on Wednesday already resulted in 150 canceled flights at Schiphol airport. 

Schiphol canceled 75 arrivals and 75 departures. That is around 20 percent of the flights scheduled at the airport today, RTL Nieuws reports. KLM also canceled 104 flights. 

Flight delays are also expected, and travelers are advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
