Hard criminals in The Netherlands should receive lifelong trial release from prison even if the judge has not laid down a probationary period, according to a majority in Parliament. MPs propose a plan to allow probation officers to keep supervising these criminals throughout their lives outside prison, the Algemeen Dagblad reports.

A 41-year-old man was arrested in Breda for sending threatening emails to a member of parliament. The man has reportedly been sending emails with death threats to the children of parliament members of the VVD and PvdA since October last year, De Telegraaf reported.

The PvdA in the Senate does not agree with Minister Ivo Opstelten's strict soft drugs policy, and will not cooperate on it. Senator Ter Horst wants the Minister to choose one region to test his idea of regulating and certifying marijuana cultivation for coffeeshops, an idea that the Minister has been against in favor of tackling criminality and nuisance instead.
