The parents of murdered children Romy Nieuwburg, Savannah Dekker, and Nick Bood launched a petition calling for higher sentences in juvenile criminal law. Their children were killed by minors, and all three offenders received the maximum juvenile sentence of one or two years of juvenile detention plus youth institutionalized treatment. That is not high enough, according to the parents, NOS reports.

While the use of drugs is not punishable in the Netherlands under the Opium Act, more and more municipalities are banning drug use in public spaces. So far 218 of the 355 Dutch municipalities implemented a total ban on drug use in public space such as parks, streets and public buildings, by adding the ban to their General Local Regulations, NOS reports based on its own research.

Medication is also not always provided according to the prescribed guidelines, according to a Vrije Universiteit Amserdam study commissioned by the association for behavioral and cognitive therapies VGCt, the Volkskrant reports.

Researchers from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam found a serious security vulnerability in commonly used processor chips made by Intel. The vulnerability makes it possible to read data processed by these CPUs. "Everything that the CPU actively uses can be leaked", researcher Herbert Bos said to NU.nl. "So that's everything you do on your computer."

The Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam is dropping its bachelor's degree in Dutch due to a lack of students. The program has been struggling with too few students for years. This year only five new students enrolled, and the degree has five staff members. Spokesperson Wessel Agterhof called it a "loss-making operation", Het Parool reports.

The Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam is considering taking steps against Piet de Vries. The theology lecturer compared the gender discussion with the situation in the Second World War, when the Nazi ideology was "forced upon the Netherlands". The board of the university announced that it will have a firm talk with the man and take appropriate action, NU.nl reports.

Hundreds of Dutch Protestant pastors, prominent people in the church, as well as the party leader and a senator of Christian party SGP, signed a manifesto against LGBTQ people. The manifesto argues that marriage is meant to only be a covenant between one man and one woman, and that good Christians should always reject homosexuality. It also suggests that your sexual identity is something you can be healed of.

A number of Dutch scientists are concerned about the well-being of children who are deported from the Netherlands after living here for years. The deportation of these children can have major consequences for their brain development and is therefore irresponsible, Erik Scherder, professor of clinical neuropsychology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, said in a report written with two lecturers from the University of Groningen.

The University of Amsterdam is no longer the best university in the Netherlands, according to Times Higher Education's ranking. The Delft University of Applied Sciences takes that honor this year. Wageningen University is also ranked above the University of Amsterdam.

This year the University of Amsterdam is ranked the 62nd best university in the world, compared to 59th last year. TU delft moved up from 63rd last year to 58th this year. Wageningen University came in 59th place this year. The Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam moved down from 165th to 166th.

Health insurer Menzis will now pay for depression treatments based on result, instead of on the number of treatments. The insurer signed a contract on this new approach with 18 mental health institutions. This involves treatments that last for less than a year, for patients who do not have chronic depression, NOS reports.

The Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam decided to close squatter hall De Verrekijker on its campus after the student club in charge of the hall arranged a gathering with controversial Palestinian activist Rasmea Odeh there on Tuesday without informing the university about it, NOS reports.

Rasmea Odeh was sentenced to life in prison in Israel for a bomb attack in which two people were killed in 1969. She was released in a prison exchange in 1980.

Violence against psychiatry staff often ends up unpunished, and employees also rarely press charges after being attacked by a patient, according to a study by the Vrije Universiteit. "In practice, the patient has license to use violence against staff", researcher Joke Harte said to the Volkskrant.

Annually between 30 and 40 percent of employees in psychiatric institutions are victims of physical violence from patients, according to the study. According to Harte, this goes further than employees getting a few punches when they have to transfer patients to separate rooms.

The University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University are the two best in the Netherlands, according to the ranking. They're respectively ranked 13th and 14th best in Europe and 55th and 57th in the world.

Their conclusion is that when looking for work in the Netherlands, ethnicity is more important that criminal records, NOS reports.

The student housing shortage in Amsterdam is getting worse and worse, and if nothing is done about it, students will start opting for universities in other Dutch cities, a group of Amsterdam universities, colleges and housing corporations said in an urgent call to the municipality. According to them, Amsterdam needs at least 2 thousand new student homes per year, Het Parool reports.

The Amsterdam police is considering allowing Muslim officers to wear a headscarf, of hijab, in an attempt to recruit more minorities, Amsterdam police chief Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said to newspaper AD.

In 2011 the police's national code of conduct was adjusted to state that symbols of belief - such as a crucifix, headscarf or yarmulke - can not be worn with the police uniform. Visible tattoos and piercings are also banned. "But I see that this is shifting", Aalbersberg said to the newspaper. "We now allow tattoos on the arms, a few years ago that was still unthinkable."

A massive power outage that affected 360 thousand homes in and around Amsterdam this morning and left train traffic across the country in chaos, was the result of a "component failure" in a TenneT power station on Hemweg in the Dutch capital, Dutch utility Liander said on its website. If you were without electricity for four or more hours, Liander will contact you regarding compensation.

A group of medical professionals from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam is researching "faith healing". They are collecting and considering tales of people whose health improved after, for example, someone laid their hands on them in prayer or anointed them, to see if there is scientific explanations for the improvement, Trouw reports.

The Vrije Universitieit in Amsterdam will soon be offering free Dutch language and culture courses to imams, Trouw reports. 

Most of these Muslim clerics were trained in turkey, Morocco or Egypt and often only speak the language that they were trained in, according to the newspaper. They often also lack knowledge about life in the Netherlands. The Vrije Universiteit wants to offer them the opportunity to change this.

The glass ceiling for women in Dutch universities remains firmly in place, with the percentage of female professors hardly increasing, according to the national network of female professors LNVH in their annual monitor. There is also still a significant wage gap between female professors and their male colleagues, Het Parool reports.
