An oil spill was discovered off the coast of Vlissingen this weekend. The spill in the Westerschelde is believed to originate from Spyros Armenakis, a Greek ship that sank 800 meters off the Vlissingen boulevard in 1965, Omroep Zeeland reports.

The ship still had fuel on it when it sank. The fuel was largely pumped out years ago, but a small amount remained. Some of it also leaked out four years ago.

The 11th edition of Rescue Vlissingen - the largest rescue services event in the Netherlands - attracted a record number of over 100 thousand visitors on Wednesday. The municipality of Vlissingen eventually called on people to stop coming to the city by car, because there was nowhere left to park, NU.nl reports.

Dutch marines are leaving the corps in large numbers out of dissatisfaction about their barracks relocating from Doorn to Vlissingen in 2022. In the first quarter of this year, 73 marines left he corps - three times as many as in previous years, ANP reports.

The marines are worried that their partners won't be able to find work in Vlissingen, and if they bought a house there, they won't be able to sell it again. Other complaints include that the new location has too few gun ranges, and that they will not be able to practice enough due to noise problems.

The police arrested a 45-year-old man from Vlissingen on Sunday for trying to rob a gas station with an ax and later trying to mug a woman, the police said in a statement on Monday.

The ax carrying man walked into the gas station on President Rooseveltlaan in Vlissingen on Sunday evening, but fled again immediately. A short time later the police also received a report that a man tried to steal a woman's handbag in nearby Middelburg. The man and the woman struggled. A passerby shot to the woman's aid and the man fled without the handbag.

Eight crew members of a Dutch fishing boat were arrested in the Vlissingen harbor, the Public Prosecutor announced on Wednesday. They are suspected of deliberately endangering fishery inspectors of Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA. The inspectors pressed charges of attempted manslaughter against them, NU.nl reports.

Dutch harbors with ferries to England are increasingly faced with Albanians trying to secretly cross to the United Kingdom, according to the Volkskrant. Over the past few months, hundreds of Albanian stowaways were caught in IJmuiden, Hoek van Holland, Europoort and Vlissingen. 

While the number of caught stowaways is comparable to last year - 440 in the first half of this year - the proportion of Albanians among them is increasing steadily, especially in Hoek van Holland and Europoort. In those two ports 92 percent of the caught stowaways were Albanian.

The Terneuzen police found five stowaways, three men and two women, in the back of a truck on Tuessday. One man is from Ethiopia, the rest are from Eritrea, NOS reports.

The truck, with a Spanish driver, was traveling to Vlissingen. While it was driving through th Sluiskil tunnel, one of the stowaways poked his head through the sail on top of the truck and was spotted by a special detection system.

The body of missing sailor Hannes Goegebeur, 18, was found off the coast of Vlissingen on Thursday night. The young Terneuzen man went missing when his t off the coast of Oostende, Belgium two weeks ago. His family was informed, AD reports. 

Fishermen found Goegebeur's body around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

A landing vessel of the Corps Marines got standed on a sandbank during a training exercise just off the coast of Vlissingen on Wednesday evening. The vessel was stuck for several hours, before high tide freed it, Omroep Zeeland reports.

A spokesperson for the Marines told the broadcaster that the stranded vessel had no consequences for the training exercise, which was set to last well into the early hours of Thursday morning.

A bowhead whale was spotted swimming off the coast of Vlissingen, the first ever confirmed sighting of such an animal in Dutch waters, according to SOS Dolfijn. The whale was first spotted on Monday night, swimming close enough to the beach that it was visible from the promenade, NU.nl reports. 

SOS Dolfijn and the first aid organization for marine animals EHBZ will keep an eye on the whale as much as possible in the coming days. Both organizations advise the public to stay away from the animal.

A 44-year-old man from Almere was arrested by the Tax Authorities' investigative department FIOD after an amount of 2 million euros was discovered in an ambulance he wanted to ship to Suriname, Metro reports. He is suspected of money laundering.

Three armed and masked men robbed a casino in the Zeeland town Burgh-Haamstede on Thursday night. They threatened two customers and staff members and took off with the customers' possessions and an amount of the casino's money. The suspects were arrested in Rotterdam a few hours later.

The autumn storm that raged over the Netherlands on Sunday, brought strong winds with it that reached speeds of between 100 and 120 kilometers per hour at its peak on Sunday night. The storm prompted the KNMI to issue a code orange warning for extreme weather conditions for Noord-Holland and the northern provinces.

Four suspects were arrested as part of the investigation into the execution of Gintas Macionis (37) yesterday morning. A 26 year old man and a 32 year old woman were arrested in Amsterdam, a 32 year old man was arrested in Bosnia and a 39 year old man was arrested in Herzegovina.
