Three persons were arrested after a demonstration by anti-Islam movement Pegida in the Utrecht district of Zuilen on Wednesday evening. Towards the end of the demonstration, the situation became unsettled and there were various vandalism incidents. The detainees were counter-protesters, RTV Utrecht reports.

A handful of Pegida supporters gathered at the Abi Bakr Issidik mosque around 7:00 p.m., where they watched a film about Islam in a cordoned off area. A group of opponents gathered outside the fences.

STIP, a special education high school on Europalaan in Utrecht, was evacuated on Thursday afternoon due to a telephonic threat. One suspect was arrested, the Telegraaf reports.

Where the threat came from, and what exactly it entailed, is not yet clear. The police are taking it seriously and are investigating the incident.

Police officers in bullet proof vests were present at the school on a large scale. All pupils and teachers were safely evacuated from the school, the STIP director said to the Telegraaf.

The four large Dutch cities - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague - will have the opportunity to present their wish lists in the area of mobility and housing during a special meeting with the government next week. This meeting will happen with Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Ministers Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs and Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure in Utrecht on Wednesday, sources in The Hague confirmed to AD after reports in NRC.

Two men who got stuck in the snow during a ski tour in Davos, Switzerland, were rescued thanks to a call to the Netherlands. The two men could not remember the emergency number, so one of them called his girlfriend in Utrecht, who in turn called the emergency services, NU.nl reports.

The woman got the men's coordinates via a GPS app and then passed it on to the Midden-Nederland control room. The control room passed the information on to Interpol, who sent a helicopter to rescue the duo.

A 34-year-old man from Utrecht died early on Friday morning after he got stuck between the fence and the roof of a bicycle shed. What the man was doing there is not yet clear. But the police concluded that his death was an accident, RTL Nieuws reports.

At around 3:00 a.m. a resident of an apartment building on Willem Schuylenburglaan heard someone shouting for help, but could not figure out where it came from. The police were called and officers found the victim in the bike shed.

Police officers and firefighters were attacked in Groningen and Utrecht over the weekend where young people on the street wreaked havoc with fireworks, authorities said. Fifteen people were arrest in connection with multiple incidents in the Paddepoel district of the city, AD reported.

It started when the fire department arrived in the district to put out a blaze, and had to respond again just an hour later when fire ignited again. On the second visit, heavy fireworks were lobbed at the firefighters causing police to respond.

Drivers in the Netherlands were neither imagining things nor embellishing in 2018 when they complained about travel times. Dutch highways were far more clogged in 2018 than a year earlier, with traffic jams up nearly 20 percent.

The heavy traffic had an impact on rush hour, but also outside of the daily busy periods, travellers association ANWB revealed on Thursday. The organization made their calculations based on both the frequency and duration of traffic jams.

A Dutch pre-teen is winning high praise around the Netherlands for racing around the country to play the piano in a fundraising effort. Bas Schipper set a record by playing all the pianos located at 16 different train stations in 18 hours and 10 minutes, breaking the previous record set by Ernesto Dennis by 75 minutes.

In doing so, he managed to raise €61,835 for diabetes research, as of Monday afternoon. The total far exceeded the goal the boy set.

Twenty Dutch municipalities will receive a total of 7 million euros to strengthen their approach to fighting radicalization. Ministers Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security and Wouter Koolmees of Social Affairs divided the amount among municipalities who submitted plans to prevent radicalization and manage people who have been radicalized, the Telegraaf reports.

The largest amount, 1 million euros, is going to the municipality of The Hague. Utrecht is getting over 900 thousand euros, and Rotterdam over 850 thousand euros.

Residents of the Netherlands' four largest cities can expect their parking permits to put a real dent in their budget next year. Amsterdam is the only one of the four cities not implementing a major price increase for next year, though the Dutch capital is still most expensive when it comes to parking costs, according to a survey by association Eigen Huis among 53 Dutch municipalities, RTL Nieuws reports.

At least 13 large municipalities and a number of smaller ones will be experimenting with voluntary firework-free zones this New Year's, the Volkskrant reports after speaking with the 44 largest municipalities in the Netherlands.

The municipality provides signboards for such firework-free zones, but not enforcements. Local residents can apply for a firework-free zone, and it is up to them to enforce it. The mayors hope to reduce fireworks nuisance without incurring high costs in this way, according to the newspaper.

Witnesses say a gunman dressed as Zwarte Piet opened fire in the Ondiep district of Utrecht and was at-large late Monday afternoon. Police said one person was injured in the shooting on Rietstraat at about 1:10 p.m. on Monday.

A resident on the scene at the time of the shooting told newspaper AD that the suspect jumped out of a white vehicle and shot at the victim's car. The newspaper said a bullet hole was visible in the windshield of a Volkswagen, which was located near an elementary school.

The police arrested 12 people in the Netherlands for involvement in the production and export of drugs to Scandinavia. A 13th suspect was arrested in Peer, Belgium. The suspects are 12 men and a woman between the ages of 32 and 16 years. They were arrested on Monday, but the police only announced the arrests on Thursday.

The police searched buildings in Utrecht, Vleuten, Woerden, Maarssen, Houten, Almere, Waardenburg, Lopikerkapel and Aalsmeer.

The Dutch provinces, transport regions and municipalities are pushing 245 million euros into getting more people to use their bicycles to get to work. In June State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure announced that the government is investing 100 million euros into measures to promote cycling, RTL Nieuws reports.

The government aims to convince 200 thousand extra people to use their bicycle for their daily commute. To achieve this, the government is investing into making cycling more attractive.

The police are looking for witnesses who can give information about the whereabouts of Churisan Allen from Utrecht. The 45-year-old Utrecht man disappeared on April 10th of this year. The police believe he may have fallen victim to a crime. His case was discussed on television program Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday.

The police responded en masse to the Utrecht city office on Tuesday due to a suspicious situation. A man was in the waiting room wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an extremely heavy bag, RTL Nieuws reports.

The man was arrested by police officers in bulletproof vests. The arrest went smoothly and without incident, according to the police. The municipal office was not evacuated or closed during the action.

The police can not yet say whether anything suspicious was found in the heavy bag the man had with him.
