Industrial companies with a higher quality of management perform better - they have higher productivity and more international activities than companies with lower quality management, according to a study done by the University of Groningen and Statistics Netherlands at the request of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

The University of Groningen set a total of 70 thousand euros aside for a farewell party for the rector of the university, according to student movement DAG. Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of Education, Culture and Science asked the university for an explanation, NU.nl reports.

According to the student movement, "in times of cutbacks and towering work pressure for teachers" the 70 thousand euros can be spent in other ways. "Instead, the Executive Board chooses to organize a party for itself."

A total of 30 Dutch municipalities have scrapped the dog tax, according to a study by the University of Groningen's research center for the economy of the lower governments COELO. These municipalities found the dog tax too difficult to collect and believe that this tax is unfair as cat owners, for example, do not have to pay tax for their pet, the researchers found, RTL Nieuws reports.

An elevator with 14 people inside fell six floors in the faculty building of the University Medical Center in Groningen on Thursday. One person was taken to the emergency room with unknown injuries, NU.nl reports.

Both staff members and UMCG students were in the elevator when it fell, the Medical Center and University of Groningen confirmed. The elevator got stuck on the sixth floor. It fell during work to solve this problem.

The other elevators in the building on Anthonius Deusinglaan have been shut down while the cause of this accident is investigated.

A number of Dutch scientists are concerned about the well-being of children who are deported from the Netherlands after living here for years. The deportation of these children can have major consequences for their brain development and is therefore irresponsible, Erik Scherder, professor of clinical neuropsychology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, said in a report written with two lecturers from the University of Groningen.

The University of Groningen and the Hanze Univeristy of Applied Sciences scrapped the management subsidies for student association Vindicat for the academic year 2017/2018. This follows a student being assaulted at a Vindicat party in December, and the association failing to report this incident, a spokesperson for the Hanze University confirmed to NU.nl.

A member of Groningen student association Vindicat was assaulted by two other members of the student association in December last year. Vindicat failed to report this incident to the relevant authorities, as they are obliged to do under the new hazing code. This new incident was massively met with disgust and calls for sanctions against the student association.

Seven universities in the Netherlands made it into the top 100 of the Best Global Universities ranking. The University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University are the two best in the Netherlands, according to the ranking. They're respectively ranked 13th and 14th best in Europe and 55th and 57th in the world.

The Netherlands performed exceptionally well in both the World and Europe University Rankings 2017, according to Times Higher Education. All 13 of the Netherlands' main research intensive universities made the top 100 of the Europe ranking and top 200 in the World ranking. 

The Netherlands outpaced the European average when it came to research reputation, citation impact and research productivity, as well as income measures to academic staff.

A letter written by the widow of writer Multatuli in 1930 recently surfaced in Groningen. It was found in a old book, which was recently given to a used book shop, RTV Noord reports.

In the letter widow Mimi Hamminck Schepel thanks an employee of the University of Groningen for his commitment to the work of her deceased husband Multatuli. By that time he had been dead for almost half a century.

Today Google is honoring the birthday of Groningen born Aletta Jacobs by replacing its usual logo with a Doodle of her. Jacobs is known for her fight for women's suffrage and for being the first Dutch woman to graduate from an university. The Google Doodle is also in honor of the 100th anniversary since women were given the right to vote, NOS reports.
