Students and Dutch universities seem to be losing interest in university democracy. Almost all institutions in the country saw a drop in election attendance and only about 3 in 10 students cast a vote this year, the Volkskrant reports based on figures received from all universities.

NS wants Dutch universities to adapt their schedules so that students can travel outside rush hour. This should help relieve the pressure on overcrowded trains. And according to NS CEO Roger van Boxtel, many universities are willing to be flexible about this.

A 17th century postmaster's case full of undelivered letters has been rediscovered in The Hague Museum for Communications' archive. Scientists have started examining the letters and will hopefully soon be able to shed more light on every day life in the 17th century, with all the gossip, intrigue and scandal it entails.

In late August, a Dutch expedition will travel by boat to the island of Edgeøya on the east side of Spitsbergen, Norway. From 1968 to 1988, a Dutch station there in the arctic gathered large amounts of ecological data. The expedition will gather and compare new data to account for the impact of global warming on the polar ecosystem.

The Niuewe Veste in Hardenberg will redevelop their lesson schedule based on research that shows that adolescents only become active much later in the day and perform poorly in the morning. Many teens suffer from permanent sleep deprivation. The school expects that the new class schedule will help students get better grades.
