The police cleared protesting students out of the University of Amsterdam's P.C. Hoofdhuis building on Friday evening. A total of 30 students were arrested for trespassing - they were not allowed inside the building. All of them were released from custody again on Saturday evening, NU.nl reports.

A group of students occupied the P.C. Hoofthuis of the University of Amsterdam on Friday. They are protesting against government budget cuts and the "erosion of education", ANP reports.

The students, calling themselves Autonomous University Postcolonial House, barricaded the entrances of the building on Spuistraat and hung a red banner from the roof. The banner reads: 'Autonomous University'.

The University of Amsterdam is no longer the best university in the Netherlands, according to Times Higher Education's ranking. The Delft University of Applied Sciences takes that honor this year. Wageningen University is also ranked above the University of Amsterdam.

This year the University of Amsterdam is ranked the 62nd best university in the world, compared to 59th last year. TU delft moved up from 63rd last year to 58th this year. Wageningen University came in 59th place this year. The Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam moved down from 165th to 166th.

According to the students, the police used batons, pepper spray and police dogs on them and several students sustained injuries. GroenLinks parliamentarian Zihni Ozdil wants an explanation from Education Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven, Het Parool reports.

During the government formation, documents were drawn up about the controversial abolition of the dividend tax - tax companies pay on profits paid out to shareholders, the Ministry of Finance confirmed to Trouw. Previously Prime Minster Mark Rutte said that the party leaders do not recall the existence of such documents, NU.nl reports.

The Ministry of Finances refuses to make the documents public, Trouw writes.

While the government is still working on plans for longer paternity leave, Dutch companies are taking the lead in this field. More and more businesses in the Netherlands are offering new fathers more paid leave when their child is born, BNR reports.

The coalition agreement for the Rutte III government states that paid paternity leave will increase from two days to five days from 2019 onwards. But a number of Dutch businesses are deciding not to wait for that.

Three people were hurt by falling pieces of ceiling at Schiphol Airport outside departure halls 1 and 2 on Thursday, a Schiphol employee confirmed to NOS. The pieces of ceiling were blown loose by hurricane strength winds. 

Departure halls 1 and 2 were evacuated and are closed until further notice, according to the broadcaster. Passengers can check in at departure hall 3.

The University of Amsterdam achieved a great breakthrough in the preservation of coral reefs. Research by the university's Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamic found a successful method of breeding coral species, the university announced. 

The results were recently published on the scientific magazine Scientific Reports.

The Netherlands is the number one choice in the world for multinationals to funnel money into tax havens, according to a study done by researchers at the University of Amsterdam. The researchers concluded that 23 percent of capital flows through the Netherlands go towards tax havens, ANP reports.

Britain comes in second place with 14 percent, followed by Switzerland with 6 percent, Singapore with 2 percent and Ireland with 1 percent. Together these five countries account for nearly half of the money globally funneled towards tax havens.

Scientists and psychologists in the Netherlands are calling for kids in youth care to be examined for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a new standard. It is becoming increasingly clear that trauma plays an important part in behavioral problems, and this can be prevented by PTSD screening and treatment, they said to the Volkskrant. Treatments of less than four hours were shown to have a significant impact, meaning the brief periods of consultation could also be especially cost effective.

The Netherlands performed exceptionally well in both the World and Europe University Rankings 2017, according to Times Higher Education. All 13 of the Netherlands' main research intensive universities made the top 100 of the Europe ranking and top 200 in the World ranking. 

The Netherlands outpaced the European average when it came to research reputation, citation impact and research productivity, as well as income measures to academic staff.

The modified version of Blackboard software used by the University of Amsterdam contains major security vulnerabilities that can easily be exploited by cyber attackers, according to two students at the university who researched this as part of their studies, NU.nl reports.

According to students Bram ter Borch and Auke Zwaan, they shared these vulnerabilities with the university's IT department in May last year, but the department did not do enough to fix the problems. So the students decided to make their findings public.
