Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA denies that it first learned that eggs were maybe contaminated by toxic fipronil in November last year. The authority did receive a report about fipronil in that month, but that report only stated that it had been used to clean stables - there was no reason to believe that it could end up in eggs and pose a potential health risk, inspector general Rob van Lint said on Wednesday, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Netherlands can close all its coal plants, but only if a national law to that effect is implemented, according to advice the Council of State sent to Economic Minister Henk Kamp on Wednesday, ANP reports.

The Tweede Kamer called on Kamp last week to by making the efficiency requirements so high that they can't be met by any coal plant. The council of state investigated whether this was possible.

On Tuesday a majority in the Tweede Kamer voted against a proposal to keep the Netherlands' strict cap on bankers' bonuses in place. While the parliamentary vote is not binding, it does suggest that if the new government decides to scrap te cap, or make the rules around it more lenient, the decision will be met with approval.

Should the Netherlands decide to stick to its low banker's bonus limit, the country could lose out on 17 thousand extra jobs and 1 billion euros in income and corporation tax, says employers' organization VNO-NCW. According to the organization, dozens of small financial institutions and at least three major international banks would move from London to the Netherlands after the Brexit, if the bonus limit was not an obstacle, NU.nl reports.

Exactly which financial institutions are involved, the VNO-NCW did not say.

A "disturbed white man" stole an army truck from the Oirschot military base and took it for a joyride through Eindhoven, Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said to parliament on Wednesday. The 21-year-old man from Veldhoven brought the truck back later that night and was arrested. He is still in custody, ANP reports.

The Tweede Kamer is calling on the Dutch government to do something about unsafe internet of things devices. A vast majority of 148 out of 150 parliamentarians voted for a motion demanding an investigation into what security requirements can be set, NU.nl reports.

The motion demands that the government investigates what minimum security requirements can be imposed on the internet of things, how those requirements can be enforced and what other measures are necessary to protect consumers from poorly-protected devices.

After 61 days of negotiations, talks to form a new Dutch ruling cabinet fell apart on Monday, according to a press release from Edith Schippers. "It has not worked out; the talks have ended," Schippers said at the beginning of a press conference announcing the news.

Nearly nine weeks after the election, the parties differences were simply too great, she added. Attempts at forming a policy to handle migrants to the Netherlands proved to be the last straw. The parties were also far apart on issues related to climate change, energy sustainability and income she said.
