Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the Netherlands' coastal provinces on Wednesday morning due to very strong winds brought by the season's first autumn storm.

The northern coastal area can see gusts of over 120 kilometers per hour, the KNMI warns. The Provinces of Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen and in the Wadden- and IJsselmeer areas can expect winds around 100 kilometers per hour.

A person was found dead on the toilet of a train at Amsterdam Central Station on Thursday afternoon, the Amsterdam police announced on Twitter.

The person was found on an intercity direct, which arrived at Amsterdam Central Station from Breda and Rotterdam around 1:00 p.m., according to Het Parool. 

The person has not yet been identified. The cause of death is also still unclear. The police conducted an investigation in the train. Track 14 is closed for the investigation.

No trains are running between Rotterdam Central Station and Den Haag Central Station this week, due to maintenance work on the rails. The work started on Monday and is expected to take until Sunday, NS said on its website.

NS advises travelers to detour, for example via Gouda, or use the Randstad Rail. One commuter train will travel between Den Haag Central Station and Den Haag HS. Buses are deployed on some routes. 

The rail company advises travelers to take extra travel time of between 15 minutes and 30 minutes into account.

No trains are traveling between Leeuwarden and Zwolle on Monday morning after a person was killed in a fatal accident on the N31 near Widrum in Friesland. A car drove down the slope and ended up next to the track. According to broadcaster NOS, the car caught fire and the driver was killed.

The driver was the only person inside the car. The N31 was closed down in both directions so that emergency services could do their work.

Thunderstorms that pulled across the Netherlands on Thursday night caused a number of problems. Lighting strikes resulted in fires in several places, as well as some disruptions to train traffic. Rock band Bløf's concert had to be paused for around 20 minutes due to the weather, NOS reports.

Fires in Tilburg, Zwijndrecht, Weesp, Wijk bij Duurstede and Naarden are all believed to be caused by lightning strikes. Lightning is also believed to be behind a big fire in a pig company in Heeswijk-Dinther, according to Omroep Brabant. Two barns burnt down, killing around 4 thousand sows.

A major signal interruption in the Randstad means that no train traffic is possible to and from The Hague Central Station. Passengers have been stuck on a train near the station for over an hour, according to AD. 

The disruption is also causing delays and problems in the rest of the Randstad region, according to NS. Train traffic to and from Leiden Central Station is also at a standstill. And no Intercity-direct trains are traveling on the HSL route between Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Dutch rail company NS is working on an expansion for its Travel Planner-app that will tell train passengers where to find empty seats in crowded trains, a spokesperson for NS said to AD. The company hopes that this function will be available from next year.

This idea was thought up by two NS analysts for an internal competition. They proposed using existing sensors, currently used to measure the weight of freight trains, for measuring the weight of passenger trains.

An escaped wallaby caused quite a commotion in the Dutch town of Staphorst on Saturday. A train driver spotted the animal next to the train tracks between Zwolle and Meppel, and train traffic had to be brought to a halt before it was caught. The wallaby is still stressed, but medically fine, Edwin Budel of Animal Protection Noord-Overijssel said to De Stentor.

ProRail is installing camera surveillance at railway crossings. The rail company is concerned that road users will be more tempted to ignore red lights at the crossings once train traffic increases on the routes between Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven in September, a spokesperson for ProRail said to NU.nl.

NS employees are striking in Arnhem between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. today. Train traffic may be hindered, not only in Arnhem, but also in the rest of the country. NS advises travelers to keep an eye on their site for delays before leaving for the station. So far all early morning trains left on time, AD reports.

From September 6th NS and ProRail will perform tests in running six trains per hour between Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven. For 14 Wednesdays a train will leave on this route every 10 minutes. If these tests go according to plan, there will be six trains per hour on this route every day from the start of the new timetable in December, NOS reports.

No trains will be stopping at Brussels Central Station today following a small explosion there on Tuesday night, NS International said on its website. The explosion happened around 8:30 p.m. The Belgian authorities had control of the situation very quickly and no one bystanders were injured. The suspected perpetrator was gunned down by soldiers almost immediately after the explosion, ANP reports.

Train travelers can expect rail traffic delays on Monday morning due to a NS worker strike organized by union FNV at Den Haag Centraal and Zwolle stations. The strike started at 5:00 a.m. and will go on until 9:00 a.m.

The Amsterdam police arrested a total of 30 people during and after the public viewing of the Europa League finals on the Museuplein on Wednesday night. After Ajax lost the title to Manchester United (2-0), the Dutch capital quickly and calmly ran empty, ANP reports.

Arrests were made for public intoxication, insults and setting a parasol on fire, among other things. One police officer was assaulted. "For us this is really an ordinary very busy Saturday night", the police said around midnight. By 1:00 a.m. Amsterdam was mostly empty and quiet, according to the news wire.

A freight train collided with an excavator at a guarded railway crossing in Deurne around 6:00 a.m. on Monday morning. No one was injured, according to the fire department. But no train traffic will be possible between Helmond and Horst-Sevenum for at least the rest of the day, NS warns.

How the accident happened is still unclear, according to newspaper AD. It seems that the train dragged the excavator for several meters. The excavator driver managed to jump out in time to avoid serious injuries. A number of the overhead lines were damaged.

Train traffic around Schiphol was halted for a short time on Thursday night while the Koninklijke Marechaussee arrested a woman who "uttered threats to train staff", RTL Nieuws reports. Train traffic took hours to get back on track.

According to the Koninklijke Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for airport and border security, the woman threatened the train staff. There are also reports that she had a knife. What exactly happened is unclear.

A code yellow weather warning for strong winds is currently in effect for most of the Netherlands. Only Friesland and Groningen are not affected. According to meteorological institute KNMI, the rest of the country can expect gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

This could have consequences for traffic and outside activities, the KNMI warns. "Follow weather forecasts and warnings."

A massive storm is set to hit the Netherlands this afternoon, bringing with it winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour. The windy weather is expected to cause problems with all forms of transport in the country, from motor traffic to planes.

The KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country. According to the institute gusts of between 75 and 100 km/h can be expected. On the west coast and around the IJsselmeer, winds can reach up to 130 kilometers per hour.

The number of unauthorized people walking along Dutch train tracks increased by 200 to a total of 3,105 last year, according to rail manager ProRail. These incidents delayed 16,539 trains and meant that 1.6 million passengers reached their destinations late, ANP reports.

According to the ProRail, these so-called "rail walkers" are often hikers, people walking their dogs, children playing or vandals. "They appear especially when the weather is nice and in places where recreation and tracks meet. Think of nature areas or campsites located next to the track." ProRail said.

Travelers association Rover received nearly 7 thousand complaints about the new NS train schedule since it was implemented on December 11th. That is almost five times more than the usual level of complaints, the association said in Trouw on Thursday.

Rover set up a special hotline for complaints about the new schedule. So far about 3,500 complaints were lodged at that hotline. Another 3,300 complaints came in via the Rover website about overcrowded trains. And the complaints keep streaming in. In a normal month, Rover gets about 1,500 complaints in a normal month.

A very busy morning rush hour is expected due to a combination of slick, icy roads and a continuing power outage in Amsterdam and surrounds. Utilities company Liander expects to have power restored completely around 8:00 a.m. 

Due to the power outage, the matrix boards around the Dutch capital are not working. "We can't put any information above the road", a spokesperson for the Dutch public works Rijkswaterstaat said to RTL. Street lights are also not working. Motorists should extra travel time into account

An early morning power outage in parts of Noord-Holland left hundreds of thousands without electricity and failures on the Dutch rail system on Tuesday. The problem started before 4:45 a.m. causing the lights to go dark in 364,000 households across Amsterdam, Zaandam, Oostzaan and Landsmeer, Dutch utility Liander confirmed on Twitter.

The cause of the outage was not revealed. Workers successfully restored power to 164,000 households by 6:30 a.m. An hour later there were about 88,000 customers without electricity, Liander said.

No train traffic is possible to and from Roosendaal on Tuesday morning. A short circuit caused by an electrical fire in a substation means that there is no electricity on the overhead, according to ProRail.
