The Netherlands is liable for the execution of one man and the torture of another in the former Dutch East Indies, the Court of Appeals in The Hague ruled on Tuesday in two lawsuits filed by children of the victims against the Dutch state. These crimes are not time-barred, the court ruled, AD reports.

The lawsuit was filed by the children of an executed man, and by tortured man Javaan Yaseman, who has since died, and his children.

A Syrian man who was caught spying in Germany for the Syrian state security service must be deported from the Netherlands, where he applied for asylum, the court in Middelburg ruled. He is also banned from entering the Netherlands for ten years, NU.nl reports.

The man came through Germany to the Netherlands in 2017. His wife and children were already in the Netherlands and he came to join them. According to the court, during his stay in Germany, the man passed information about Syrian opposition members residing in Germany to the Syrian security service.

The Public Prosecutor is dropping an investigation into decorated soldier Marco Kroon, who said that he killed a man who abducted him while on a mission in Afghanistan. The investigation has yet to provide a definitive answer, but there are insufficient leads to confirm whether or not what Kroon reported actually happened, the Public Prosecutor said on Thursday, NOS reports.

The court in Brussels convicted 84-year-old Belgian castle lord Marc d. V. G. of sexually abusing a number of teenage boys between 1996 and 2013 and sentenced him to eight years in prison. A number of these abuses happened on his boat on the Wadden sea in the Netherlands, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

The Public Prosecutor demanded life in prison against 63-year-old Eshetu A. from Amstelveen for war crimes committed in Ethiopia in the 70s. A. is charged with imprisoning, torturing and murdering dozens of supposed opponents of the Derg regime, ANP reports. 

A. called the allegations against him "very shocking", but insists that the Prosecutor has the wrong man. According to him, many people in Ethiopa have the same name as him.

The police had a breakthrough in the case of a Rotterdam man being kidnapped in Amstelveen earlier this year. Investigators found the house where the man was held hostage on Spaarnestraat in Leiden, the police announced on Thursday. The house has been thoroughly searched and the police expect to make arrests soon, NU.nl reports.

Dutch man Jelle F. was sentenced on appeal to 18 years in prison for throwing acid in a woman's face in a Delhaize supermarket in Antwerp two years ago, ANP reports.

The sentence is the same as when F. first stood trial. Unlike the first trial however, the appeal judge did not find F. guilty of attempted murder, but of extortion and torture. According to the court, it is not clear that F. wanted to kill his victim.

A 45 year old man suspected of war crimes in the Balkans in the 90's, was extradited to Bosnia on the Public Prosecutor announced. In Bosnia the man stands accused of killing two people and torturing and robbing prisoners.

A 61 year old man was arrested in Amstelveen on suspicion of committing war crimes in Ethiopia in the late 70's as a representative of the former Derg regime. According to the Public Prosecutor, the man is accused of the imprisonment, torture and murder of opponents of the former regime. The man has been living in the Netherlands for some time and has received Dutch nationality.

The chief rabbi of the Orthodox Jewish community in Amsterdam, Aryeh Ralbag, has been linked to a case in the United States against four rabbis who allegedly kidnapped and beat Jewish men to force them to agree to a divorce. One of the victims has accused Ralbag of beating him, but Ralbag denies this accusation.
