The terrorist threat level in the Netherlands is "at the top of the range" of substantial threat, and nearing critical level, according to Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice. This is because of "what happened with the Thalys and some other things". Belgium has placed extra security at the Dutch embassy in Brussels, as well as at the embassies of other countries part of the coalition fighting against terrorist organization Islamic State.

CDA faction leader Sybrand Buma thinks that the Netherlands should be intervening in Syria too, instead of only in Iraq. He wants to deploy Dutch troops to Syria to protect refugees and bring order. He also thinks that the establishment of safe havens in Syria, Iraq and Libya, where soldiers under the banner of the United Nations or the European Union can protect refugees a viable option.

The Tweede Kamer, lower house of Dutch parliament, is debating and voting on whether or not the Netherlands will give further financial aid to Greece this afternoon. So far the Coalition, VVD and PvdA, and the D66 have announced its support for further aid. The PVV and CDA will not back the proposal.

After a week of speculation, the Dutch cabinet has reached an agreement to a package of reforms for the country’s tax system. With the selection of a new Senate on Tuesday, the Cabinet will very likely need the support of opposition parties to get new plans through the Senate more than ever. The CDA and D66 may be willing to give this support, but only if Prime Minister Mark Rutte meets their conditions.

As election day rolled on into Wednesday night, political leaders in the Netherlands came out of the woodwork to address their parties and give their reactions to early exit polling. The polls showed drops in support for the coalition parties VVD and PvdA, as well as a surprise slide for anti-Islam PVV, with significant gains for D66, and more modest gains for the SP and the conservative Christian alliance CU/SGP.
