The housing ratio - the total housing costs as a percentage of disposable income - was higher for tenants in the Netherlands than for homeowners last year. Tenants spent an average of 38.1 percent of their disposable income on housing costs, while homeowners spent an average of 29 percent, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

The vast majority of Dutch people are satisfied with their lives, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. Only 2 percent of Dutch are downright negative about their lives, 12 percent are neutral and the rest are more or less satisfied. There is no remarkable difference between how men and women in the Netherlands consider their lives.

The number of passengers traveling through the five Dutch airports keeps growing. In all of last year a total of 79.6 million people traveled through the airports in the Netherlands, 4.5 percent more than in 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

The number of Dutch adults who smoke and drink are slowly decreasing, but the number of overweight people in the Netherlands is still stable, according to the Health Survey and Lifestyle Monitor for 2018 by Statistics Netherlands and public health service RIVM. Last year 50 percent of Dutch were overweight, 22.4 percent smoked at least sometimes, and 9 percent were heavy drinkers, NU.nl reports.

Over a fifth of people who fell victim to home burglary in 2017 were burgled again within a year, according to the 2017 Security Monitor by Statistics Netherlands. The chance of burglars targeting the same home more than once is greatest in cities, RTL Nieuws reports.

In 2017 two percent of the Dutch population, around 287 thousand people fell victim to a burglary or attempted burglary. For over 75 percent of the victims this only happened once, 15 percent had two burglaries, and 7 percent had three or more burglaries.

The Netherlands booked a trade deficit in natural gas for the first time ever last year, Statistics Netherlands reports based on provisional figures. In 2018 a total of 12 billion euros of natural gas was imported, while the export amounted to 9.8 billion euros. The trade deficit thus amounted to 2.1 billion euros.

Between 2007 and 2015 a total of 4.5 million euros in donations were made each year in the Netherlands. 80 percent of donors came from the top 20 percent wealthiest Dutch households. And in nearly half of the cases, the money ended up with someone else in this same group. 90 percent of donations went from parent to child, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

Of all working people in the Netherlands, freelancers are most often at risk of dropping below the poverty line, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. In 2017 the percentage of freelancers - self-employed persons with no employees - at risk of earning less than they need increased, while the number of employees at risk of poverty has been decreasing for years.

The average selling price for a home in the Netherlands surpassed the 300 thousand euros mark for the first time in history. In January homes exchanged owners for an average of 302,157 euros, Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry reported on Tuesday.

Compared to January last year, the price for an owner occupied home increased by 8.7 percent. The housing price increase is picking up. In December homes were 8.4 percent more expensive than the same month the year before.

The confidence of Dutch consumers is negative for the first time in four years. Both consumers' opinion of the economic climate and their willingness to buy declined somewhat, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday.

In February consumer confidence stood at -2, compared to 1 in January. Consumers are less positive about the economy than in January, with the economic sub-indicator falling from 3 to 1. Dutch consumers are also more negative about their financial situation, and therefore less willing to make large purchases, according to the stats office.

The wealth of the median Dutch household increased significantly in 2017, rising by 6 thousand euros to 28,300 euros. This is mainly due to substantial price increases on the housing market, Statistics Netherlands reports. If homeownership is taken out of account, the median wealth increased only slightly compared to 2016 to 14,100 euros. 

Statistics Netherlands looked at all the assets and debts of Dutch households. Savings and investment mortgages are not included in these figures as the stats office was not given access to that data. Pensions are also not included.

The Dutch government used old figures when calculating the average energy bill increase for this year, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate acknowledged to NOS after reports in AD.

The Dutch economy grew by 2.5 percent last year, compared to 2.9 percent growth in 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported based on initial figures. The economic growth was boosted by higher consumer spending and business investment. The trade balance - the difference between imports and exports - contributed less to the growth than the year before.

The number of flexible employees in the Netherlands increased by three quarters, from 1.1 million to 2 million, over the past 15 years, Statistics Netherlands and TNO report. The number of freelancers, also referred to as self-employed in the Netherlands, grew from over 630 thousand in 2003 to 1.1 million last year.

In some 70 percent of the 63 thousand marriages in the Netherlands in 2017, the man was older than the woman, Statistics Netherlands reports. In most cases the age difference is small, but in over 2 thousand marriages the groom was at least 15 years older than his bride. Brides being that much older than their grooms rarely happens in the Netherlands, according to the stats office.

In January Dutch consumers paid 2.2 percent more for goods and services than the same month last year - the biggest price increase since September 2013, Statistics Netherlands reports. According to the stats office, the increase of the low VAT rate put upward pressure on the prices of food, books and public transport, among other things.

The total number of crimes registered by the Dutch police in 2018 decreased by 6 percent compared to the year before, Statistics Netherlands reports. The number of sex crimes, however, is on the rise. 

The police registered  almost 9 thousand sexual offenses like rape, sexual harassment or -assault last year, compared to 8,400 in 2017. The number of rape reports increased from 1,200 in 2014 to 1,900 last year. And the number of sexual assault reports increased from 1,700 in 2015 to 2,400 last year.

Over 700 thousand Dutch adults faced domestic violence at least once over the past five years. And more than 100 thousand children in the Netherlands are abused each year, according to an extensive and long term study by scientific research and documentation center WODC, the Volkskrant reports.

Last year 6 percent of Dutch aged 12 or older said that they never use the internet. That amounts to about 886 thousand people, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. In 2012 some 10 percent of the Dutch population said they never use the internet.

The number of unemployed people in the Netherlands decreased to 326 thousand in November. That means that 3.5 percent of the Dutch labor force are unemployed, slightly lower than before the outbreak of the financial crisis at the end of 2008, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

Statistics Netherlands considers someone to be unemployed if he or she does not have paid work, is actively looking for work, and is available to start immediately. Over the past three months the number of unemployed people declined by an average of 9 thousand per month.

Some 856 thousand Dutch employees are not building up a pension, according to a study Statistics Netherlands did on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. That amounts to 13 percent of all Dutch employees. Previously the Ministry estimated that only 4 percent of employees are not saving for retirement, RTL Z reports.

The correct education level for girls in the Netherlands are more often estimated lower in their school advice than that of boys. In the 2017/2018 school year, girls were more often at a higher school level in the third class of secondary education than their school advice said. Boys less often did better than their teachers had expected, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

The number of Dutch people living in poverty decreased from 1.2 million in 2013 to almost 1 million in 2016, according to social and cultural planning office SCP. The SCP attributes the decline to the improvement of the Dutch economy after 2013, NOS reports.

Women in the Netherlands still earn less than their male counterparts, but the wage gap is slowly decreasing, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. 

According to the stats office, the wage gap can partly be attributed to background characteristics like age, education and experience, but not completely. Statistics Netherlands was hesitant to say whether the rest of the gap is due to gender based discrimination.
