The number of bankruptcies in the Netherlands last year fell to its lowest level since 2008, Statistics Netherlands announced on Monday. In 2016 a total of 4,396 companies were declared bankrupt - nearly a fifth less than in 2015 and almost 4 thousand fewer than when bankruptcies peaked in 2013.

Last month 328 companies and institutions were declared bankrupt, 88 fewer than in November 2016.

Exotic plants brought to the Netherlands by people are rapidly spreading through the country, according to Statistics Netherlands on Friday. Water plants in particular are causing problems in Dutch waterways. According to calculations by the statistics office, these so-called invasive alien plant species are present in 160 "kilometer grid squares" - areas of one kilometer by one kilometer. Before 1997 there were only invasive plants in 25 grid squares.

Inflation in the Netherlands increased from 0.6 percent to 1.0 percent in December, according to Statistics Netherlands on Thursday. But despite this increase, the Dutch inflation over 2016 was at its lowest level in nearly 30 years. Over 2016 inflation in the Netherlands increased only 0.3 percent. The last time inflation was so limited was in 1987, according to the statistics office.

Immigration and an increase in the number of babies born in 2016 pushed the Dutch population over the 17.1 million mark. The four big cities in the Netherlands saw most of the growth, while about 1 in 5 municipalities actually saw their populations shrink, Statistics Netherlands announced on Tuesday.

Amsterdam saw the biggest growth in 2016 with an increase of over 15 thousand residents to a total of almost 850 thousand inhabitants on December 1st, 2016. Rotterdam's population grew with 8 thousand and The Hague and Utrecht with 4 thousand each.

Dutch people over the age of 75 are increasingly using the internet, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday. Currently 60 percent of Dutch elderly have internet access at home, compared to slightly more than 40 percent four years ago.

This age group is also making increasing use of smartphones and tablets, in addition to PC's and laptops. In 2012 about 10 percent of over-75 year olds had a tablet and 5 percent had a smartphone, now 30 percent have these devices.

For the first time in history there are an equal number of religious and non-religious people in the Netherlands, according to a report by Statistics Netherlands. Last year 50 percent of the 18-years and older population were atheists, and 50 percent followed some form of religion, NOS reports.

The largest group of believers are Roman Catholics, with 24 percent of the population. Protestants follow with 15 percent. Around 5 percent of the Dutch population are Muslim and 6 percent adhere to other faiths like Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism.

The number of young homeless people in the Netherlands increased significantly this year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands published on Friday. In 2016 an estimated 12,400 people between 18 and 30 years were homeless, compared to 8,300 in 2015.

The total number of homeless people in the Netherlands remained stable at an estimated 31 thousand in 2016. Between 2009 and 2015 the number increased significantly from 17,500 to 31 thousand.

In the third quarter of this year, Schiphol and Eindhoven airport both accommodated a record number of passengers, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released. At Schiphol 18.6 million passengers crossed the floor, an 8 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year. Eindhoven had 1.5 million passengers, a 15 percent increase.

According to Statistics Netherlands, these two Dutch airports have seen an increase in passenger each quarter for the past six years.

Last year 185 cyclists were killed in accidents on Dutch roads, 115 men and 70 women, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. The number of cycling deaths in the Netherlands has been around 180 per year since 2004, though the total number of traffic fatalities halved in the last 20 years.

Unemployment in the Netherlands continued its slight decline in November and for the first time since 2012 the number of unemployed in the country dropped below 500 thousand, Statistics Netherlands said on Thursday.

Last month there were 499 thousand unemployed people in the Netherlands, compared to 502 thousand in October. The unemployment rate remained stable at 5.6 percent of the workforce. Between September and November, the number of unemployed fell by an average of 7 thousand per month.

Last year the Netherlands granted Dutch citizenship to 22 thousand people. That is 5 thousand less than the year before, a decrease of 19 percent, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands.

Some 1,700 Turks nd 900 Moroccans were given Dutch citizenship, making up the largest group. Though the number of Turks and Moroccans given citizenship has been decreasing for a number of years, according to Statistics Netherlands. Other large groups included Soviet citizens and Iraqis, with about 900 each, and Chinese with 700.

Over the past 10 years the number of new fathers in the Netherlands who take paternity leave doubled. Despite this, it is still only 11 percent of new dads that take time off work to care for their kids, according to the Emancipation Monitor 2016 published by Statistics Netherlands and social and cultural planning office SCP on Tuesday, the Volkskrant reports.

According to the researchers, this increase in fathers taking paternity lave can be mostly attributed to the younger generation. Young mothers now less often work less after the birth of a child than before.

The Dutch economy and government finances are both in a much better state than expected a few months ago, according to Statistics Netherlands' December estimate. The Rutte II cabinet is expected to end its term without a deficit and the economy is reaching the level it was before the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, ANP reports..

The Statistics Netherlands accountants expect economic growth of 2.1 percent in 2017. That is the same level as this year, following a 2 percent growth last year. Three months ago 1.7 percent was expected for 2016 and 2017.

Last year more women occupied top positions in businesses in the Netherlands, though they are still a minority compared to the men. In 2015 a quarter of the top positions were filled by women, according to the Emancipation Monitor published by the social and cultural planning office SCP and Statistics Netherlands on Tuesday.

In the government and healthcare there are an equal number of men and women working in high management. But the number of women in high positions is low compared to the number of women working in those two sector.

Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen of Infrastructure is working on a law that will ban the use of a smartphone while cycling. That means no more texting or calling from your bike, a spokesperson for the Ministry confirmed to newspaper AD on Monday.

The number of adults held in custody by order of Dutch courts fell in 2015 by 3,450 to 39,790. It represents a decline of nearly eight percent on the 2014 prison population, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), a reversal after two straight years of slight increases.

An increasing number of babies in the Netherlands are born to older fathers, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. Last year 2.5 thousand babies were born to fathers over the age of 50. 

Last year a total of 170.5 thousand babies were born in the Netherlands. 16 percent of them have a father that is 40 years old or older, compared to 10 percent 20 years ago.

VMBO pupils with wealthier families go on to college more often that pupils whose families live on a lower income, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday. 

In total 1 in 5 VMBO pupils eventually end up in an HBO education. And their parents' income seem to play a role in this - 40 percent of children from wealthier families move on to HBO, compared to 30 percent of kids whose parents have lower incomes.

In the third quarter unemployment was down in all provinces in the Netherlands, compared to the same quarter three years ago, Statistics Netherlands announced on Friday. On the same day Amsterdam announced that municipal program Participate Work found work for 3 thousand long-term unemployed people so far this year.

Their temporary jobs less often turn into permanent contracts, they spend more time in temporary work or even lose those jobs, according to Statistics Netherlands in its annual report on integration.

The wage gap between men and women in the Netherlands is decreasing, mostly due to an increasing level of education among women, according to Statistics Netherlands. Young women in the country now earn more on average than young men.

According to the Statistics Office, this goes hand in hand with the fact that on average young women are better educated than young men. Women under the age of 36 that work for the government earn more on average than their male counterparts. In the industry, women under the age of 30 earn more than their male peers.

People working in the healthcare and welfare sector experience an above average workload, according to a study by Statistics Netherlands and TNO. They also feel they have less space to organize their work at their own discretion, NU.nl reports.

For this study, the researchers asked workers in various sectors about how they perceive their workload last year.

The Dutch economy grew by 0.7 percent in the third quarter compared to the second quarter and by 2.4 percent compared to the third quarter in 2015, according to the initial figures by Statistics entherlands. This is the 10th quarter in a row that the Dutch economy showed growth.

Statistics Netherlands mainly attributes the growth to exports and household consumption. Consumers spent more on electronics, restaurants and other forms of entertainment. More foreign tourists also visited the Netherlands.
