A group of Amsterdam residents marched through the Kinkerbuurt on Thursday night to protest against the gentrification of Amsterdam West and the problems caused by tourism, Het Parool reports.

They carried banners and megaphones, shouting slogans like "Amsterdam, not for sale!" and "Who's city, our city!". The procession stopped at various locations, including at Jan Pieter Heijestraat, where there are plans to build a long-stay hotel with apartments, instead of housing.

A massive 31 percent of people who receive welfare benefits in the Netherlands are also receiving psychological treatment, according to a study by Statistics Netherlands and Harvard University. Among people who work or go to school, 10 percent undergo psychological treatment, NOS reports.

The Netherlands saw an increase in greenhouse gas emissions last year. The total greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 197 billion kilograms of CO2 equivalents, 1 percent more than in 2015, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday based on preliminary figures.

CO2 equivalents are used to add up the effects of different greenhouse gasses, such as methane and nitrous oxide, on the environment. 1 kilogram of CO2 equivalent is equal to the effect of 1 kilogram of CO2.

Hotels, restaurants and bars in the Netherlands saw a turnover increase of nearly 2 percent in the second quarter of this year, compared to the first quarter, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. The hospitality industry's turnover has been increasing steadily for four years.

All parts of the hospitality industry saw a turnover increase in the second quarter. Fast food restaurants - which includes snack bars, lunchrooms, meal deliverers and ice cream shops - saw the biggest growth at 2.5 percent.

The number of people in the Netherlands receiving welfare benefits continues to rise, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. Between June 2016 and June 2017, this group increased by 12 thousand people to a total of 472 thousand welfare recipients. The increase is smaller than in previous years, the stats office added.

Compared to other EU countries, people in the Netherlands are relatively often employed, but at the same time work almost the least number of hours per week, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday.

Of the 12.8 million people in the Netherlands between the ages of 15 and 75 years, 65.8 percent had paid work last year, according to the stats office. That is roughly seven out of ten men and six out of ten women. In the European Union, only Sweden, Germany and Estonia have higher employment rates.

Women in the Netherlands are more likely to give birth during the week than on the weekend, according to Statistics Netherlands' analysis of the birth and mortality patterns in the country last year. The stats office partly attributes this to the fact that more women give birth in hospitals - less than a quarter of last year's births happened at home.

Remarkably, there are also fewer deaths in the Netherlands over the weekends than on weekdays. In 2016 only 7 percent of the deaths happened on a Sunday and there is a peak of deaths on Fridays. It is not clear why.

Tourism is playing a bigger and bigger part in the Dutch economy, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. Since 2010, tourist spending in the Netherlands increased by 27 percent. Last year the tourism sector generated an added value of 24.8 billion euros to the Dutch economy, over 43 percent more than the 17.3 billion euros generated in 2010.

The number of children in the Netherlands growing up in a family that receives welfare benefits increased by 2.1 percent to a total of 230 thousand last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. This number increased every year since 2012. 

More than two thirds of children who lived on welfare last year had an immigration background. Half of this group fall under the "other non-western category", compared to 39 percent in 2012. In this category the stats office includes all non-western countries except Morocco, Suriname, Turkey, Aruba and the former Dutch Antilles.

As in previous years, the number of murders committed in the Netherlands decreased in 2016, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Friday. Last year a total of 110 people were killed by violence in the country, ten fewer than in 2015. The victims were 76 men and 34 women.

The number of murder victims halved since the start of this century, both in men and women.

The Dutch government collected 25.3 billion euros in environmental taxes and levies last year, 3 percent more than in 2015, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. Households carried almost two thirds of that amount.

Nearly 40 percent of Dutch employees live and work in the same municipality, according to figures for 2015 Statistics Netherlands published on Thursday. The average Dutch worker work 22.6 kilometers from their home. Workers in the big cities and people living on the outskirts of the Netherlands, such as on the Wadden Islands, in particular tend to live where they work, NU.nl reports.

Residents of the province of Zeeland spent the least money on vacationing abroad last year, according to data platform Localfocus based on figures from Statistics Netherlands. The average expenditure per Zeeland resident was 697 euros per resident. Noord-Holland residents spent the most money, 902 euros per holiday, NU.nl reports.

Destinations also differed between the two provinces. Zeeland residents preferred to go to Spain. While Noord-Holland residents opted for more expensive holiday countries like Germany and France.

The unemployment rate among people with a non-Western background in the Netherlands decreased in 2016, according to Statistics Netherlands. Last year unemployment in this group was 13.2 percent, compared to 16.5 percent in 2014. 

Statistics Netherlands also noted that unemployment is higher among the second generation of non-Western immigrants than the first generation. The unemployment rate for second generation immigrants, who were born in the Netherlands, was 14.3 percent last year, compared to 12.5 percent for first generation immigrants.

The total population of the Netherlands increased by 35 thousand people in the first half of this year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. Like last year, immigration is still the driving force behind the population growth in the Netherlands.

During the first six months of this year about 100 thousand immigrants settled in the Netherlands, about the same as in the same period in 2016. A total of 69 thousand people emigrated away from the Netherlands. The migration balance is therefore 31 thousand, approximately the same as a year ago.

The number of Dutch who explicitly said 'no' to being organ donors increased by 152 thousand to 1.71 million since early 2016, Statistics Netherlands announced on Wednesday. In the same period the number of people who did give permission for their organs to be donated also increased, by 36 thousand to 3.6 million.

One in eight Roosendaal residents said they experienced many problems with drug use or drug trade in their neighborhood last year - the biggest proportion of all larger municipalities in the Netherlands, according to Statistics Netherlands' Safety Monitor. The rest of the top six is made up of Limburg's four largest municipalities and Rotterdam.

Unemployment in the Netherlands dropped to 4.9 percent of the labor force in June, Statistics Netherlands announced on Thursday. This is the first time since the summer of 2011 that less than 5 percent of the labor force are unemployed.

Over the past three months the number of unemployed people in the Netherlands fell by an average of 6 thousand per month to 446 thousand in June. The number of people with paid work increased by an average of 11 thousand per month over that same period.

Dementia was the leading cause of death in the Netherlands last year with over 15 thousand cases, according to preliminary figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday. The number of dementia related deaths is expected to only increase with the aging population.

Compared to 2015, the number of dementia related deaths increased by 7 percent. The increase was strongest among men with 11 percent. Dementia is the second most common cause of death among men, with lung cancer taking first place. Last year 5 thousand men died due to dementia in the country.

Last year 86 people drowned in the Netherlands, three more than in 2015, according to Statistics Netherlands. Despite this slight increase, the number of drowning deaths in the country decreased over the past 20 years.

Airbnb and other home-sharing sites like Wimdu and HomeAway cause stress for the owners of traditional hotels, bed and breakfasts and campsites in the Netherlands, according to a survey by Statistics Netherlands. The survey showed that a quarter of Dutch accommodation owners experience competition from home sharing.

Less than 20 percent of the 873 thousand freelancers and self-employed in the Netherlands have insurance against occupational disability, according to figures by Statistics Netherlands and TNO. 70 percent of this group don't have insurance because they can't afford it. 

A quarter of this group say they can carry this risk by themselves and just over 20 percent can fall back on their partner's income. 14 percent don't have insurance because they don't trust insurers. This is especially common in the construction industry, according to the stats office.

Eindhoven's economy is growing faster than those of the four large cities in the Randstad, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Thursday. Last year Eindhoven's GDP grew by 3.6 percent, compared to the National average of 2.2 percent. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague all saw growth between 2.2 and 3 percent.

According to the stats office, Eindhoven's high-tech industry plays a big role in the municipality's economic growth. A large part can be attributed to the presence of companies like ASML, Philips and NXP.

The number of diesel cars from before 2001 on Dutch roads decreased again last year, Statistics Netherlands said on Tuesday. Nationwide the number of old passenger and commercial cars dropped by 18 percent compared to 2015 and by a massive 73 percent compared to 2010. The decline was greatest in the Dutch cities that took specific measures to get these polluting cars off the street.
