Employers in technology, healthcare and education will have an increasingly difficult task filling vacancies in the coming years, according to the University of Maastricht's research center for education and labor market RAO. Over the next five years, the number of jobs in the Netherlands is expected to grow by 520 thousand, with the largest number of vacancies expected to be in technology and healthcare, according to the researchers, NOS reports.

A massive 85 percent of young adults in the Netherlands were happy with their social life and their life in general last year, Statistics Netherlands reports based no the Annual Report of the National Youth Monitor. With that the proportion of satisfied young people is about equal to the proportion of all adult Dutch that are happy with their lives. 

The youth monitor surveyed around 4 thousand young people between the ages of 18 ad 25 years. On average, people in this age group give their lives a score of 7.6.

For a short time during the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Netherlands' population counter stood at 17,171,717, Statistics Netherlands announced.

The stats office's population counter is based on information from municipalities, which includes no names. So the 17,171,717th resident can not be traced. The counter is also an estimate, which means that it is not necessarily true that the 17,171,717th resident became a resident of the Netherlands at exactly 00:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Dutch people increasingly shop online, according to Statistics Netherlands. The online purchase of food products in particular increased sharply.

This year 76 percent of Dutch aged 12 and older made at least one online purchase, compared to 73 percent last year. Dutch consumers also buy online more often. Clothing is most often bought online, with 52 percent of Dutch having purchased clothing online at least once this year. Tickets to events come in second place with 45 percent.

The number of foreign tourists visiting the Netherlands grew by 5.5 percent to more than 15.8 million last year, according to a report by Statistics Netherlands and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The tourism growth is stronger in the Netherlands than in most other European countries. 

World wide tourism grew by an average of 4.8 percent per year since 2008. Last year the number of tourists worldwide grew by 3.9 percent to more than 1.2 billion. Asia and Oceania and Africa are particularly benefiting from the growth, while Europe's growth was more variable.

Existing home prices in the Netherlands increased by 8.2 percent in October, compared to the same month last year - the biggest increase since early in 2002, according to Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry.

Housing prices in the Netherlands have been steadily rising since June 2013. The average price level of existing homes in October 2017, was at the  same level as in May 2007. October's housing prices were still 4 percent lower than the price peak in August 2008, and 22 percent higher than the housing market low point in June 2013.

The majority of children under the age of 13 in the Netherlands eat less fruit, vegetables and fish than the Nutrition Center recommends, according to a health survey by Statistics Netherlands in collaboration with the RIVM and the Nutrition Center. In the period between 2014 and 2016 less than four in ten children ate enough fruit, just over four in ten ate enough vegetables, and little more than half ate enough fish.

The health survey is annually conducted among around 1,100 children. Researchers question the kids' parents about the food they eat.

A significant number of families with young children are moving away from the large Dutch cities, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. Of the couples who had their first child in 2012 in one of the municipalities outside the four large cities, 14 percent moved to another municipality within four year. In the large cities, that percentage is two to three times as high.

Last year the biggest proportion of Dutch couples consisted of two highly educated people, instead of one highly educated person and one less educated person as was the case in 2006, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. According to the stats office, this can be attributed to the fact that more people in the Netherlands achieve at least a bachelors degree.

Artists more often have a low income and are more often dependent on benefits than other employed persons in the Netherlands, despite being a profession with a high education level. In the period between 2013 and 2015, over half of artists earned less than 30 thousand euros per year. The average for all employees is 39 percent, and 17 percent for all highly educated workers, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday.

The life expectancy for people over the age of 65 in the Netherlands is slightly lower than previously predicted. According to Statistics Netherlands' current prediction, 65-year-olds can now expect to live another 20.5 years, instead of the previous prediction of 20.7 years. This will likely mean that the retirement age in the Netherlands will not increase further, RTL Nieuws reports.

Union FNV is calling attention to the wage gap between men and women on Friday, Equal Pay Day in the Netherlands. The union organized a debate with Dutch politicians and companies on the differences in salaries between male and female employees. According to FNV vice president Kitty Jong, it is high time for companies and politicians to close this gap, NOS reports.

Homeowners in the Netherlands are more often satisfied with their homes and their living environment than people living in a rental, according to an analysis by Statistics Netherlands based on figures from 2015 of the Housing Study Netherlands. Of all households in the Netherlands, 87 percent are satisfied with their homes and 82 percent with their living environment.

A massive 93.8 percent of homeowners said they're happy with their home and 86.5 percent said they're happy with their living environment, compared to 76.6 percent and 75.2 percent respectively among tenants.

Home prices in Amsterdam increased sharply in Amsterdam in the third quarter, while the number of home sales in the entire Noord-Holland dropped, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry. Home prices in Amsterdam were 13.8 percent higher, compared to the third quarter last year. Nationwide, home prices increased by 7.6 percent. 

Home sales in the Netherlands reached record high in the third quarter. Over 61 thousand homes were sold, the highest number ever sold in one quarter. These transactions involved over 16 billion euros.

Over 60 percent of young people who received their vocational MBO diploma last year, are happy with the course they followed and the school they attended, according to Statistics Netherlands. The rest would make different choices if they could do it again.

In September 4.9 percent of the Dutch labor force were unemployed, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands and benefits agency UWV. This figure is the same as in August of this year, but lower than the 5.7 percent unemployment rate of September 2016.

The unemployment rate only includes unemployed people who want work and are available to start immediately. It does not include people who want to work, but aren't immediately available, or people with part time work who want to work more.

A total of 4,400 people applied for asylum in the Netherlands in the third quarter of this year, and 2,300 people joined family members that already have residency in the country, Statistics Netherlands reports. This is the first time since the third quarter of 2016 that the number of new asylum requests is higher than family reunification applications.

Female workers are more likely to call in sick to work than their male counterparts, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. This difference is largest in the age group 25- to 35-years, where female workers are absent from work due to illness almost twice as much as men - 4.3 percent compared to 2.2 percent. According to the stats office, this can be attributed to illness during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Of all the countries in the European Union, the Netherlands spends the most money on importing insects, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Thursday. In the first half of this year, the Netherlands spent 8.2 million euros on importing live insects, five times more than in 2012.

Two million women in the Netherlands are not economically independent and are therefore financially vulnerable, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday based on figures from 2016. About a million men find themselves in the same position.

Of the financially vulnerable men, 27 percent have paid work, but earn less than a welfare benefit. The same is true for 35 percent of financially vulnerable women. 28 percent of the men receive a welfare benefit and 21 percent receive an occupational disability benefit. Among the women it is 17 and 13 percent.

Registered crime in the Netherlands dropped for the second year in a row in 2016, according to the criminal law and enforcement report published by Statistics Netherlands, scientific research and documentation center WODC and the Judicial Council on Monday. The police registered fewer crimes and arrested fewer suspects in 2016 than in 2015, resulting a decrease in cases through almost the entire criminal law chain.

Women in the Netherlands working in flexible employment wait longer to start a family than women with permanent employment contracts, according to a study by Statistics Netherlands on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

In the period between 2003 and 2015, the stats office looked at a group of 25 thousand childless women between the ages of 18 and 45 who have a partner. The stats office specifically looked at which of these women had a child within the first year of joining the working population.

A fifth of Dutch companies with at least 10 employees, dealt with the consequences of a cyber attack last year, Statistics Netherlands revealed in a study on IT incidents on Monday. Companies in the financial- and energy sectors are most vulnerable to cyber attacks, according to the stats office.
