The number of investment by organizations in the Netherlands into the United Kingdom has actually been higher over the past two years than before the 2016 Brexit referendum, said British embassy senior staff member Michiel Veldhuizen. Veldhuizen, the Country Director for the UK Department for International Trade, gave the remarks at the embassy's fourth Cyber-FinTech Summit on Thursday in The Hague.

In 2018 residents of the Netherlands used 20 percent less materials per resident than in 2000. This involves materials like fossil fuels and metals processed into products like plastics. Netherlands residents recycle more than most other EU countries, but also create more waste, Statistics Netherlands said on Friday in a report on the Netherlands progress to a circular economy.

The proportion of women on the Dutch labor market who work full-time is on the rise, though slowly. Last year 27 percent of women worked 35 hours a week or more, compared to 25 percent in 2016. In the same period, the proportion of full-time male workers decreased slightly from 74 to 72 percent. Just over half of the total work force in the Netherlands worked full-time last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

Homelessness in the Netherlands doubled over the past decade to around 40 thousand homeless people, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. Due to an increasingly lack of available housing and money for counseling, the Netherlands' large municipalities are no longer able to effectively combat homelessness. Overnight shelters are overcrowded in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Nijmegen and others, the Volkskrant reports based on its own research.

The Dutch economy grew by 1.7 percent in 2019 - the lowest growth since 2014, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday. Economic growth last year was boosted by more consumer spending and investments by companies. The trade-balance had a negative effect on the growth, the stats office said.

In 2018 the economy grew 2.6 percent. The growth is declining, "but if you compare it with the countries around us, we did very well," Statistics Netherlands chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen said to NU.nl.

Existing owner-occupied homes were most expensive in Bloemendaal at 832 thousand euros on average, and cheapest in Delfzijl at 155 thousand euros on average, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry.

Non-religious residents of the Netherlands are more likely to be organ donors than their religious counterparts. The level of social involvement also plays a major role in the decision to donate one's organs after death, according to a study by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Over 35 percent of people who do not identify as participating in a religion have registered as an organ donor, compared to roughly 25 percent of religious people. This also varies dramatically depending on which religion a person follows.

Despite a significant increase in the number of international knowledge migrants in the Netherlands since 2003, these highly qualified people still make up only a small proportion of the Netherlands' workforce compared to other European countries, according to figures statistics Netherlands released on Monday. 

In the period 2003 to 2005, a total of 221 thousand highly qualified people from abroad worked in the Netherlands. Between 2016 and 2018, that increased to 383 thousand. International knowledge migrants then accounted for 4.2 percent of the work force in the Netherlands.

More and more municipalities in the Netherlands are scrapping the dog tax. In 2010, dog tax was still levied in 308 of the 431 municipalities. This year only 193 municipalities are still taxing dog ownership, eight fewer than in 2019, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday. 

The municipalities that still tax dog ownership, expect to collect a total of 51 million euros in dog tax this year, 2.9 percent les than in 2019.

People who have a paid job generally feel healthier than people without a job, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. 90 percent of employed persons describe their own health as good or excellent, compared to 76 percent of people with no work. On a scale of one to five, working people give their health a score of 3.4 while non-working people score their's 3.0 on average.

This situation has been the case since 2015 - shortly before the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union in June 2016, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. People who flew from the Dutch airports last year, most often flew to London. The most plane passengers traveled from the Netherlands to Heathrow Airport in London. And London was the most popular destination for flights from four of the five national Dutch airports last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

A total of 1.75 million people flew between a Dutch airport and London Heathrow last year. El Prat airport in Barcelona was the second most popular destination with 1.61 million travelers, followed by Dublin with 1.35 million.

Last year, nearly 71 thousand new homes were built and delivered in the Netherlands, over 6 percent more than in 2018 and the biggest increase in a decade, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The total housing stock in the Netherlands grew by 0.9 percent last year.

The number of new asylum seekers and people coming to join family members in the Netherlands decreased slightly in 2019 compared to the year before. The number of asylum seekers from Nigeria and Syria increased the most, Statistics Netherlands said on Tuesday based on figures from immigration and naturalization service IND.

Last year, 2 thousand more people applied for asylum in the Netherlands than in 2018, but the number of people joining family members through the family reunification program decreased by 2,300. That brings the total to some 300 fewer than in 2018.

Municipalities in the Netherlands expect to receive 10.8 billion euros in municipal taxes this year, 6.3 percent more than in 2019, Statistics Netherlands reports based on the municipal budgets for 2020. Property tax is increasing nearly 5 percent this year, parking charges are up nearly 10 percent. But it is visitors who will be hit the hardest - tourist tax is increasing 40 percent this year.

Gay and bisexual young people were more than twice as likely to be bullied, stalked or threatened online than their heterosexual counterparts last year, Statistics Netherlands reports based on a survey among 38 thousand internet users between the ages of 12 and 25 years. Among all young people, regardless of sexual orientation, girls were bothered online almost twice as often as boys.

Some 16 percent of children in the Netherlands are growing up in a single-parent household, a substantial 48 percent rate increase compared to 20 years ago. Fewer than 11 percent of children lived with one parent back in 1999, and the rate steadily grew over time, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

"This situation can arise because, for example, parents have separated, a parent has died or the parents have never lived together," the statistics office said. Nearly nine-in-ten of the 538 thousand children are registered at the mother's address.

Worker productivity was largely flat between 2008 and 2018, despite a large increase in the number of hours worked by self-employed people. Business sectors with more self-employed people generally see lower growth in productivity, according to Statistics Netherlands.
