Gay and bisexual young people were more than twice as likely to be bullied, stalked or threatened online than their heterosexual counterparts last year, Statistics Netherlands reports based on a survey among 38 thousand internet users between the ages of 12 and 25 years. Among all young people, regardless of sexual orientation, girls were bothered online almost twice as often as boys.
A substantial increase in people relocating to the Netherlands pushed the population of the country to 17.4 million people by the end of 2019, the largest population growth in the country since the beginning of the century. This year the country counted 8.5 million passenger cars. Almost half of Netherlands residents own a car.
According to the stats office, the massive increase is related to the growing population, incomes, and commuter traffic, among other things.

Car owners in the Netherlands will pay 147 million euros more in road taxes next year than this year, according to Statistics Netherlands. The increase is partly due to the growing fleet of vehicles, higher rates, and the particulate matter tax that will be implemented. In total, the government and provinces expect to collect almost 6.1 billion euros in road tax in 2020.
The road tax, or motor vehicle tax, consists of a government part and a part collected by the provinces. The government expects to collect 131 million euros more next year, the provinces 16 million euros more.

Last year the Dutch transport sector emitted 26 billion kilograms of CO2 equivalents of greenhouse gases, almost as much as in 2012. Last year road traffic accounted for 17 percent of the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the Netherlands, according to Statistics Netherlands. The total CO2 emissions from road traffic was 2 percent higher in 2018 than in 2017 and 28 percent higher than in 1990.
Passenger cars accounted for 62 percent of the CO2 emissions in road traffic. Heavy goods vehicles and buses accounted for 20 percent.
The number of unemployed people in the Netherlands increased in the third quarter, compared to the previous quarter, for the first time in 5.5 years, according to Statistics Netherlands. In the third quarter there were 319 thousand unemployed people, 14 thousand more than in the second quarter. The unemployment rate rose from 3.3 percent to 3.4 percent.
Men are overrepresented in the highest level of two thirds of professional groups in the Netherlands. The remaining one third of professions which count more women in the top are mainly in the care and welfare sector, and in education, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.
