Despite a few days of climbing temperatures, the Netherlands can expect winter weather again later this week. From Thursday Weerplaza expects snow and sleet for the country.

A rain zone will pass over the Netherlands on Thursday, brining a strong northwesterly wind with it that will blow polar air across the country. On Thursday afternoon the numerous showers are expected to turn into snow and sleet. "In some regions several inches of snow can fall, enough for snow fun, but also enough to delay traffic."

A very cold night lies ahead for the Netherlands, with minimum temperatures several degrees below zero, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The western parts of the country can expect snow around late afternoon, which will spread across the country during the course of the night. 

The KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for icy roads this evening and tomorrow. Motorists are warned to adjust their driving behavior, slow down and keep a safe following distance. Also keep a close eye on weather and traffic reports.

Friday is turning out to be a cold day for the Netherlands, with afternoon temperatures expected to range between freezing and -2 degrees. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning, warning motorists to be careful of slick, icy roads across the country.

The icy weather will continue on through Saturday. The western parts of the country will have some snow on Friday night, and it will spread to the eastern parts of the country during the night. The conditions on the roads is expected to be worse on Saturday morning.

Two containers filled with 50 tons of real snow are on their way to Breda for the Winterland Breda snowball fight, which starts in the Valkenberg on Thursday afternoon, BredaVandaag reports.

The snowball fight will kick off with alderman Paul de Beer throwing the first snowball. It will continue until 11:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Participants can also enjoy some mulled wine, hot chocoloate or craft beer from Schrobbeler, while listening to music by  De Lievelings Dj's van je Zusje.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for icy, slick roads across the Netherlands this morning. Motorists are warned to adjust their driving behavior - slow down and keep a safe following distance.

The weather warning affects the entire country except the Wadden islands. The KNMI expects that the iciness will dissipate during the course of the morning.

The first snow of the season hit the Netherlands on Monday night and during the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to Weeronline. Reports of wet snow or sleet came from Stiens in Friesland and Roodeschool in Groningen. Frost also triggered the first deployment of salt trucks this season, RTL reports.

Temperatures dropped to below zero in large parts of the Netherlands overnight. Gritters were mainly deployed in Noord-Holland, Friesland and Groningen. Roads,b ridges, viaducts and highway ramps may be slippery in these provinces, but also in the rest of the country.

The Netherlands can expect some wintry weather next week. Weerplaza expects frost every night and if there is rain, it may very well be wet snow, the Telegraaf reports.

Some European countries already had their first snowfall of the season. And while last week the Netherlands still had mild temperatures between 13 and 16 degrees, this weekend the thermometer will barely rise over above 10 degrees. 

Next week will be even colder with an additional charge of cold air heading our way. By mid next week maximum temperatures are expected to drop to only 5 degrees.

The Netherlands can expect freezing temperatures with snow and frost this week, according to the KNMI. The meteorological office issued a code yellow warning for slick roads for all of the Netherlands, in effect until noon on Monday.

Monday will be partly cloudy with a period of sunshine, and a weak to moderate southeasterly wind. Many places can expect light frost. Afternoon temperatures will be between 0 and -2 degrees.
