Dutch investigators on the ground in eastern Ukraine have officially begun to salvage the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, the Dutch Safety Board announced Sunday. The Boeing 777 crashed near Donetsk in mid July on its way to Kuala Lumpur. Nearly 300 people died on the flight that took off from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

The national memorial held in honour of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was viewed on television by 937,000 people, television ratings agency Kijkonderzoek said Tuesday. The memorial was held Monday afternoon in Amsterdam, and was attended by King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Princess Beatrix.

Items belonging to passengers of the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 will be returned to families in the coming weeks Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg told a television audience. Aalbersberg, head of the Dutch victims repatriation mission, says the first batch of personal affects will be given to Malaysia Airlines by the air crash investigators as early as next week. The airline is to then coordinate with family and friends of the victims.

Discussions with both leading politicians are focused on the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which departed Amsterdam en route to Malaysia, but met with catastrophe in the skies over eastern Ukraine. Dutch casualties neared 200 in the July incident, and significant numbers of Malaysians and Australians were also on the flight that left 296 dead.

All works on the train tracks to and from Schiphol seems to have been finalized, and traffic to or from the airport is up and running again after copper theft last week left trains unable to use the tracks.

After trains traveling to Schiphol came to a near stand still on Thursday night, rail traffic to the Amsterdam airport has been cancelled throughout the weekend, and it is expected to remain significantly affected at least to Monday's evening rush hour. The trouble started when copper thieves cut through electricity wires, setting the wires alight and causing damage to the tracks.
