A strike held by Transavia pilots at airports in the Netherlands ended at noon. Now the airline will focus on carrying out as many of the flights scheduled for Monday as possible, so that most passengers can still reach their destination today, Transavia CEO Mattijs ten Brink said according to ANP.

Transavia pilots are on strike until noon on Monday, resulting in around 30 Transavia flights being delayed or canceled - 18 from Schiphol, six from Rotterdam and six from Eindhoven Airport. Only departures are affected by the strike. Arrivals are still on schedule, NU.nl reports.

The strike actually started at midnight, but the first affected flight was only scheduled to depart around 6:00 a.m.

If Lelystad Airport can't take over some of Schiphol's air traffic by April next year as planned, the growth limits currently set at the busy Amsterdam airport will have to be changed, Schiphol CEO Jos Nijhuis said at the presentation of the airport's annual figures on Friday.

Dutch Transavia pilots are planning to strike in the second half of this month - during the February holidays. The approximately 500 Transavia pilots have been without a collective labor agreement for more than a year, and negotiations with the airline about better working conditions stalled on Friday, NOS reports.

"At the moment, a strike seems to be the only way to enforce our demands", the Dutch pilots' union VNV wrote on a flyer being handed out at Schiphol this week.

Snow expected to start falling in the Netherlands later this morning, is already causing problems with air traffic. Schiphol lists a number of flight cancelations, and KLM announced on Thursday that the airline is canceling 26 flights scheduled for Friday. Motorists, especially in the west of the country, are warned to be careful of icy roads during morning rush hour.

After the municipal elections, GroenLinks wants the new Amsterdam city council to block expansion plans for Lelystad Airport, party leader Jesse Klaver and Amsterdam faction leader Rutger Groot Wassink said, NOS reports.

Lelystad Airport is owned by Schiphol. And Amsterdam has a 20 percent share in Schiphol. The green party wants Amsterdam to be an "activist" shareholder and stop expansion plans for Lelystad Airport.

Over 76.2 million people traveled through the five large airports in the Netherlands last year, Statistics Netherlands announced on Wednesday. That is a significant increase compared to 2016, when 70.3 million travelers arrived or departed at Schiphol, Eindhoven Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Groningen Airport Eelde and Maastricht Aachen Airport.

Four out of the five large airports handled more passengers in each quarter of 2017 than a year earlier. Only Maastricht Aachen saw a decline.

A crew member of TUIfly was arrested at Schiphol Airport on Saturday on suspicion of drug trafficking from Curacao. The Koninklijke Marechaussee confirmed that someone was arrested, but would give no further details, the Telegraaf reports.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee is a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border control and airport security. "The investigation is ongoing", is all that a spokesperson would say to the Telegraaf.

Schiphol can expand with takeoff and landing strips on the coast, residents living around the Amsterdam airport state in a report that will be handed to Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management on Tuesday. They hope that this report will prompt the minister to investigate alternatives to growing the airport in its current location, BNR reports.

The Tax Authority's investigation service FIOD is investigating fraud with construction invoices at Schiphol airport. Several employees and former employees of the airport and external companies working for Schiphol are suspected of involvement, NRC reports.

The Public Prosecution Service confirmed to the newspaper that an investigation was launched into "passive and active bribery" and involvement in forgery. Ten to 15 people are being questioned as suspects and witnesses, NRC writes based on anonymous sources.

After hurricane-force winds caused chaos at Schiphol on Thursday, the airport's flight schedule is getting back on track. Schiphol ended up canceling 320 flights on Thursday, on Friday 33 cancelations are reported.

Schiphol's website shows 21 canceled arrivals and 12 canceled departures for Friday. 14 departures are delayed at this stage. The arrivals is somewhat more of a mess, with 57 delays reported so far. A large number of flights also arrived earlier than scheduled.

Schiphol announced that air traffic will gradually restart from around noon after for 45 minutes due to hurricane strength winds. 

Arrivals at Schiphol were expected to resume at 12:10 p.m., Eurocontrol said citing the strong winds. Arriving flights were put in a holding pattern beginning at 11:20 a.m. “Very high delays all afternoon”, the European air traffic control monitor stated.

Three people were hurt by falling pieces of ceiling at Schiphol Airport outside departure halls 1 and 2 on Thursday, a Schiphol employee confirmed to NOS. The pieces of ceiling were blown loose by hurricane strength winds. 

Departure halls 1 and 2 were evacuated and are closed until further notice, according to the broadcaster. Passengers can check in at departure hall 3.

Hurricane-force winds in the Netherlands forced the shutdown of nearly all train service, all Schiphol air traffic, and several local tram services on Thursday. The NS made the decision to stop the trains as damage reports on the railways and at train stations kept coming in, the NS said.

A western storm drawing over the Netherlands today is causing increasing disruption to flight traffic. So far 268 flights scheduled to arrive or depart from Schiphol Airport have been canceled and there are numerous delays. "Please expect delays for departing flights of up to 30 minutes", the Amsterdam airport warns. "Our flight schedule will be disrupted for the rest of the day."

At this stage 81 departures from Schiphol are delayed. And delays are reported on 220 arrivals, including flights that already landed.

A western storm is set to hit the Netherlands this morning. A code orange weather warning for very strong winds is in effect for all provinces except the northern ones, where a code yellow warning is in place. Road users in Groningen are also warned to beware of icy roads. All forms of traffic will be affected by the storm, with canceled flights, fewer trains, and more traffic.

A western storm will hit the Netherlands on Thursday, bringing with it strong winds. Gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour are expected in the western coastal provinces. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the whole country, starting at 10:00 a.m. and continuing through to 2:00 p.m. A code yellow warning is in effect for the rest of the day.

Delays are also expected throughout the day. Travelers are advised to keep an eye on Schiphol's or their airline's website for actual flight times.

A man and a woman were recently arrested at Schiphol airport separately from each other after returning from conflict areas in Syria and Iraq, the Public Prosecutor announced in a statement. Both are suspected of participating in a terrorist organization.
