The government can solve the nitrogen emission problem by making public transit a more attractive option with a massive investment, according to NS and ProRail. The rail manager and -company propose that the government invest over 20.6 billion euros in the railways until 2040, for dozens of improvements, AD reports.

The organizations want to shorten the travel time from Leeuwarden and Groningen to the Randstad by making adjustments to the Hanze line, for example. Train journeys from Twente, Nijmegen and Vlissingen can also be up to 30 minutes faster with specific adjustments

The renovations, which will include larger access gates and a new bus station, are scheduled to start in 2022 and expected to cost some 500 million euros, AD reports based on draft plans the newspaper got a look at.

Authorities in the Netherlands arrested a Dutch man at Schiphol Airport after Swedish officials accused the man of producing terrorist propaganda, the Dutch prosecution service OM said on Friday. He was living in Sweden for the past three years and was deported on Wednesday as an undesirable alien, the OM stated.

The 28-year-old was “was arrested after arrival at Schiphol on suspicion of involvement in terrorism.”

He became the focus of an investigation because of his online behavior, which uncovered ties to ISIS, the OM said.

Damaged overhead lines between Hoofddorp and Leiden left three trains stranded on Thursday, ProRail reported. Around 1,400 passengers were evacuated. The stranded trains are currently being towed away.

"The contractor is currently inspecting the damage", ProRail said. "How long the repairs will take is not yet known." No trains are currently running between Hoofddorp and Leiden. "ProRail regrets the inconvenience for all travelers on this route."

In the next 30 years, the Dutch government wants to limit the number of flights from Schiphol to popular tourist destinations. Instead the focus will be on increasing the airport's international network by favoring companies who contribute to this network in the distribution of flight slots, the Volkskrant reports based on Infrastructure Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen's draft Aviation Policy Document 2020-2050.

Flights from Schiphol to Barcelona departed again on Tuesday morning, after many flights to the Catalan city were canceled on Monday evening due to unrest. At 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, a Transavia flight departed from Schiphol to Barcelona, followed by a Veuling flight an hour later. Other flights to the Spanish city for Tuesday are all still on schedule, according to the Schiphol website.

A United Airlines flight destined for Amsterdam made an emergency landing Monday morning with broadcaster CTV saying the aircraft lost cabin pressure above eastern Canada. United flight 986 rapidly descended to 10,000 feet nearly five hours after departing San Francisco and flew over Quebec and New Brunswick before landing in Bangor, Maine in the northeastern United States.

Some 197 passengers and 13 crew members were on board the Boeing 787-9, the AP reported, when it safely landed in Maine at about 7:15 a.m. Netherlands time. There were no injuries.

An unusual delivery of live fish caught the attention of Amsterdam police hook, line, and sinker. Investigating officers found the aquatic animals swimming around hidden compartments filled with liquid cocaine.

It started on Sept. 4 when police officers on stakeout witnessed dozens of boxes being loaded into vans at Schiphol airport. The delivery vehicles left a holding area for animal cargo and traveled to a storage facility in Amsterdam where the boxes were offloaded, police said.

KLM ground crew personnel at Schiphol will strike for the third time in two weeks on Wednesday afternoon. The Dutch airline canceled 12 European return flights as a precaution and expects that the strike will result in delays. A two-day strike by the Balpa labor union for pilots in the UK has led to at least 44 flight cancellations at Schiphol Airport, according to information provided by the Amsterdam airport. Pilots for British Airways walked off the job on Monday, leading to about 1,700 canceled flights in total.

Of British Airways flights originating in Amsterdam, eight flights to Heathrow and three flights to Gatwick were canceled on Monday and again on Tuesday. The figures were the same also for flights destined for Schiphol.

KLM canceled a total of 11 departures and 10 arrivals at Schiphol airport on Monday due to a strike by the Dutch airline's ground crew. All flights are within Europe. 

The strike is happening between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. due to a conflict over a collective bargaining agreement. Union FNV wants an 8 percent wage increase over two years, a less flexible roster for ground crew, and for KLM to give more of its ground crew employees a permanent contract, according to NU.n. During negotiations, KLM did not agree to any of these demands.

Schiphol Airport security workers will be allowed to walk off the job in rotation on Sunday, a court in Haarlem ruled on Friday. Airport officials and unionized private security workers faced off on the use of labor actions to voice the FNV union’s concerns about any new security firms contracted by the airport.

Starting at 7:30 a.m. half of the workers screening passengers and their hand luggage in any given line will stop working every 30 minutes. This will continue over the course of twelve hours.

The issue of whether or not Schiphol should be allowed to grow further, has the Dutch population divided. A tiny majority thinks the airport should be allowed more flight movements, while an almost as large group thinks it should stay as it is, according to a study by I&O Research on behalf of environmental organizations Milieudefensie, RTL Nieuws reports.

The researchers found that 35 percent of Dutch think Schiphol should grow. 34 percent think the airport should neither grow nor shrink, 24 percent think it should shrink, and 7 percent have no opinion on the matter.

The police arrested three men in a Hilversum warehouse on Monday after finding 32 kilograms of crystal meth. The drugs, with a street value of some 3.2 million euros, were hidden in a magnet that came from Mexico and entered the Netherlands via Schiphol, the police said in a statement on Tuesday.

The arrested suspects are a 47-year-old man from Almeer, a 32-year-old man from Amsterdam, and a 43-year-old man from Uithoorn. The crystal meth was seized and destroyed.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee already received 110 complaints about problems with valet parking companies around Schiphol this year. Clients return from their trip to find damage to their car, many extra kilometers on the odometer, or that their car was involved in a traffic accident or caught speeding while they were away, Het Parool reports.

With valet parking, the traveler hands their car over at the airport and the company parks the car elsewhere. When they return, their car is returned to them at the airport or they have to pick it up at a paring lot.
