The Rotterdam-Beverwaard asylum center will stop taking in asylum seekers from safe countries following a number of incidents involving such asylum seekers in the center, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb wrote in a letter to the city council. This halt is being implemented in agreement with the COA, the central agency for the reception of refugees, RTL Nieuws reports.

Between April and August of this year, there were a total of 20 incidents in the asylum center, Aboutaleb wrote. "In the period from mid-August to the present, this number has increased to 69 incidents."

Free sector rents in the Netherlands continue to rise. In Rotterdam and Eindhoven they rose even faster than in Amsterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague over the past two quarters, according to figures rental platform Pararius released on Tuesday, ANP reports.

Rotterdam showed the strongest growth of the five large Dutch cities. Last quarter rents in Rotterdam were 14.3 percent higher than in the same quarter last year. Eindhoven saw an increase of 12.1 percent. Tenants in Rotterdam now pay an average of 16.50 euros per square meter per month, and those in Eindhoven 14.62 euros.

A 32-year-old man was killed in a shooting in the Rotterdam district of Katendrecht, in the south of the city, on Sunday. Exactly what happened is not yet clear.

A person was arrested shortly after the incident on Rechthuislaan, but was later released because he was not involved in the shooting, the Rotterdam police said on Twitter. 

The police believe the gunman fled on the back of a scooter. A burning scooter was found on Schulpweg. Whether it was used in the shooting, is under investigation.

An an Indonesian student in Rotterdam in July, is also suspected of assaulting another woman that same day. According to the Public Prosecutor, Gerson F. grabbed the as-yet-unidentified victim from behind, put a hand over her mouth and groped her buttocks, RTL Nieuws reports.

Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb was authorized to ban a demonstration against Zwarte Piet in November 2016, the court in Rotterdam ruled. Activist group Kick Out Zwarte Piet wanted to protest in Rotterdam during the arrival of Sinterklaas in November 2016. Mayor Aboutaleb banned this demonstration out of fear of disturbances.

A 64-year-old man who was  in Rotterdam on October 17th, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, the police said in a statement.

The man was gunned down at close range while sitting in his car. He was hit by multiple bullets. A passenger in the car escaped unharmed.

A collision between a train and a person resulted far fewer trains running to and from Schiphol airport on Friday morning. Travelers should take considerable delays into account, a spokesperson for rail company NS said to NU.nl.

"There are problems especially from the south towards Schiphol", the spokesperson said. "There are far fewer trains from the direction of Rotterdam."

Passengers departing from Amsterdam, The Hague, Leiden and Zaandam can also take delays into account. The problems are expected to persist until at least 9:30 a.m., according to the NS site.

The environmental federations call this a "turning point" for light pollution in the country. The Netherlands is one of the most illuminated countries in the world, AD reports.

The police released footage of a suspect fleeing the scene of a last week in which a 64-year-old man was critically injured. The police believe this was an attempted assassination in the criminal underworld and hope the public can help identify the perpetrator.

The station is still completely closed and no subways are running through it. The Rotterdam police are urgently looking for footage of a on Wednesday morning. A 64-year-old man from Rotterdam was critically injured in the shooting. "Footage from surveillance cameras and mobile phone videos are very welcome", the police said in a statement.

A man was seriously injured in a shooting on Willem Ruyslaan in the Rotterdam district of Kralingen on Wednesday morning. The victim was hit by multiple bullets, including in his head. He is in critical condition, NOS reports.

The shooting happened at around 11:00 a.m. The victim was sitting in a car when he was shot at close range. Witnesses reported hearing at least 11 gunshots. A second person sitting on the passenger seat of the car, was unharmed.

Multiple accidents caused extreme amounts of traffic on Dutch roads during rush hour on Thursday evening. There was a total of 478 kilometers of traffic jams on the Dutch highways, making Thursday evening the busiest rush hour in the Netherlands so far this year, according to Rijkswaterstaat.

According to the ANWB, which also takes provincial roads into account, there was 887 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads on Thursday evening. According to the ANWB's figures, Thursday evening was the third busiest rush hour this year.

A 2.5 year old American Stafford was found abandoned at the door af a closed animal shelter in Rotterdam on Monday morning. The sad discovery was made even sadder by a note found with the dog. "Can't take care of him anymore, have no income and I'm on the street now", the dog's owner wrote.

"PLEASE take good care of him. He's a good dog. I couldn't do anything else - sorry", the note, which the police posted on Twitter, reads. "His name is Zion. 2.5 years old."

The police call on Zion's owner to come forward. Not for punishment, but for help, the officer wrote on Twitter.

Since the beginning of 2017 there's been 16 incidents involving a hand grenade at a Dutch business, and in ten of these incidents the hand grenade exploded, Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security said in response to parliamentary questions, RTL Nieuws reports.

D66 parliamentarian Maarten Groothuizen wanted to know how many times criminals used hand grenades to threaten or pressure business owners in the Netherlands. He also asked how often a municipality closed a business after such an incident.

Instead of declaring certain areas in the city firework-free over New Year's, Rotterdam wants to designate areas where fireworks can be lit this year. The city plans to have 35 designated firework zones, NOS reports.

According to mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb, it will still be possible for many Rotterdam residents to light fireworks in their neighborhoods. "With the introduction of fireworks zones in our city, we hope to significantly reduce the nuisance and the efforts of our emergency services. At the same time Rotterdam residents who want to can still light fireworks", he said.
