The police are investigating the death of Bianca van Es. The 29-year-old woman was found dead in her home on Luntershoek in Rotterdam under suspicious circumstances on Friday morning. An autopsy found traces of violence on the young woman's body, but her cause of death is still a mystery, the police said in a statement.

A team of 20 detectives is working on the investigation. Police officers spoke to a number of local residents and witnesses, forensic experts investigated the victim's home, and detectives are currently viewing available camera footage.

Explosives were found in a home on Donkerslootstraat in Rotterdam on Tuesday, the police said on Twitter. Four surrounding homes were evacuated while the Ministry of Defense's explosive disposal squad investigated.

The explosive experts removed the explosives from the home and safely disposed of them elsewhere. 

The police searched the home following an explosive on Alberto Moraviahof in Rotterdam on Sunday night. Multiple cars were damaged in the explosion. A 36-year-old man was arrested.

The police are investigating an explosion at sisha lounge Villa Blanca on Schiedamseweg in Rotterdam on Saturday morning. Investigators call on witnesses to come forward.

Multiple people reported the explosion to the police at around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. At the scene responding officers found debris littered on the street. The facade of the sisha lounge was severely damaged. No one was injured.

A number of local residents were evacuated from their homes while the police made sure that there was no further danger.

A couple in Rotterdam left their toddler and baby home alone on Wednesday night to go to the movies. The situation was discovered when the little girl called the police, the officer who answered the call wrote on Facebook.

"My phone rings, it is an [emergency number] 112 report. I start with 'Good evening police...' but before I could finish speaking I hear a child's voice asking: 'Where's mommy?'", the officer wrote. "I don't know where mommy is." The girl on the line sounds no older than 3 or 4 and there's a baby crying in the background.

One of two men suspected of planning to commit a terrorist attack in Rotterdam was previously sentenced to three years in prison in Germany. He was released at the end of last year, was revealed in a pro-forma hearing against the two in the court of Rotterdam, ANP reports.

What the man was convicted of is not clear. But according to the Public Prosecutor, it was not a "terrorism-related" case. Neither suspect was present in the courtroom for the hearing.

The burka ban will apply to everyone, also the Netherlands' large cities, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in reaction to the news that the large cities won't prioritize enforcement of this ban on face covering clothing. "Let us first implement the law. Then the big cities will see that it also applies to them", he said.

Rotterdam's plan to ban smoking on the streets around hospitals and schools has been placed on hold. Responsible alderman Sven de Langen of public health sees too few legal possibilities to enforce such a ban, NOS reports.

In August the Erasmus MC hospital, Hogeschool Rotterdam and the Erasmiaans Gymnasium said they want to ban smoking around their premises on Wytemaweg. De Langen then started investigating whether such a ban can be included in the municipality's local ordinance.

On Sunday evening a number of buildings in various Dutch cities were colored orange to draw attention to violence against women and girls. The United Nations proclaimed November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Over the next 16 days, this campaign will get attention worldwide, NU.nl reports.

In the Netherlands, at least 32 buildings in 22 different places were illuminated in orange on Sunday. These included the Grote Kerk in Breda, The EYE film museum in Amsterdam, and the Erasmus bridge and Euromast in Rotterdam.

The early results of an investigation into the severity of domestic violence in the Netherlands showed that incidents are repeated in the same families far more frequently than previously thought. The Verwey-Jonker Instituut announced the results in conjunction with domestic violence hotline provider Veilig Thuis.

They are looking into the behavior of about 1,200 parents and 1,550 children.

Activists angered by the use of blackface around the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition are planning to protest in Dokkum on Saturday. The protestors had previously made arrangements with the municipality to lawfully demonstrate in the Friesland town at the televised Sinterklaas arrival last year, but their buses were stopped by people who created a blockade on the A7 motorway shutting down all traffic on a main road into the province.

Customs divers found 239 kilograms of marijuana hidden under a sea going vessel docked at a terminal on Maasvlakte in Rotterdam on Sunday, the Public Prosecutor said.

The customs officer decided to dive underneath the ship after the seaport police received a report that something suspicious was detected during the maintenance of the ship. The diving team removed several large sports bags from under the ship. "The state of the bags showed that they have been in the water for a long time", the Persecutor said.

Current Rotterdam police chief Frank Paauw is the top candidate to succeed Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg as police chief in Amsterdam, well informed sources told Het Parool. Aalbersberg is stepping down as Amsterdam police chief to become the National Coordinator for Counter-terrorism and Security. 

Paauw has been chief of the Rotterdam Rijnmond police since 2010. Before that he was deputy chief at the Haaglanden department, where he started his career as a detective in 1986.

ProRail will be carrying out work around Schiphol this weekend. As a result, no trains will be running on the route between Schiphol Airport and Leiden from Friday to Sunday. On Saturday the airport will be completely inaccessible by train, ANP reports.

On Saturday no trains will run between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Schiphol, Amsterdam Zuid and Schiphol, and Schiphol and Leiden. The Intercity direct between Amsterdam Central Station and Rotterdam will also be down over the weekend.

 Some 13 gunshots were fired at a group of young people standing at the Afrikaanderplein in Rotterdam during the early hours of Saturday morning. As far as is known, no one was hurt. But bullets did hit a parked van and a parked car, AD reports.

The group of young people were standing on the corner of Paul Krugerstraat and Bothastraat at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. They heard a shot, saw a man with a firearm, and then the man started shooting at them, they told newspaper AD. They ran away.

31 mayors of larger Dutch cities are calling on the Senate not to remove the appointment of mayors from the Dutch constitution, and to keep the procedure as is. Removing the appointment procedure from the constitution is the first step in enabling an elected mayor. The mayors are worried that this will result in them losing their connecting role as "father or mother for all residents, businesses and institutions", they wrote in an open letter to the Senate, the Volkskrant reports.

The G-Team won the NEO Hackathon in Rotterdam and Delft earlier this month with their project "GDPR with NEO". Team members Niels Beukers and Serge Hendrickx walked away with 500 NEO, worth around 7,100 euros at the time. Buekers and Hendrickx's "GDPR with NEO" project aims to integrate the General Data Protection Regulation with blockchain to better protect user privacy and provide solutions for data storage.

An 18-year-old student of the Shipping and Transport College in Rotterdam was killed in a workplace accident on Thursday. The boy from Stellendam ended up under a forklift truck, the Telegraaf reports.

The accident happened at a storage location on Steinweg Hartel in the Euro Port, according to RTV Rijnmond. 

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The police are taking into account that 32-year-old Dyron Vrutaal was not the target of the Rotterdam shooting in which he was killed on Sunday. All scenarios is still open. "We also hear theories that it may have been mistaken identity", a police spokesperson said to newspaper AD.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and the national government are currently considering what to do with the no longer used lighthouse on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam - the tallest lighthouse in the Netherlands. Dismantling and breaking it down is one of the options being examined. The Dutch Lighthouse Association is against this and thinks the lighthouse should get the status of a monument, NOS reports.
