An angry motorist forced an ambulance off the road on Westzeedijk in Rotterdam on Sunday morning. The ambulance was on its way to provide medical assistance on Marconiplein, but without flashing lights or sirens. The motorist blocked its way, AD reports.

An increasing number of Amsterdam residents are looking for a home in The Hague or Rotterdam as housing prices in the Dutch capital are increasingly unaffordable, Dutch realtors association NVM said with the release of its quarterly figures on Thursday. These two cities are now also seeing housing price increases far above national average, NU.nl reports.

National Police Chief Erik Akerboom thinks that the use of drugs in the entertainment circuit has become too normalized and he wants to get rid of the "normal image" of this type of consumption, he said at an international police summit in Rotterdam on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.

Drug fighters from 120 countries are gathered in Rotterdam to learn from each other and make agreements on an international approach to fighting drug trafficking and production.

The fire department in Zuid-Holland had their hands full with reports of flooded houses and cellars, caused by heavy rains during the early hours of Wednesday morning, ANP reports.

Alblasserwaard, with villages such as Alblasserdam and Molenaarsgraaf, in particular had many problems, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Holland-Zuid said to ANP. The control room in nearby Hoeksche Waard also received many calls.

The Rotterdam police surprised the children in the Sophia Children's Hospital on Sunday by dropping off dozens of balloons shaped like Spongebob, Piglet and Nintje, among others. 

The police seized the balloons from a man who was selling them illegally. In consultation with the Public Prosecutor, the police decided to repurpose the balloons to put a smile on the faces of kids admitted to the Sophia Children's Hospital.

The body of a newborn baby was found on the balcony of a flat on Stationstraat in Schiedam on Saturday afternoon. The Rotterdam police are urgently looking for the parents of the child. "We are particularly concerned about the mother, who may need medical or psychological care", the lead investigator said in a statement on the police website.

Increasing violence and drug trafficking in Antwerp has its roots in Netherlands organized crime, according to Antwerp mayor Bart de Wever. "The drug problems in terms of cocaine trafficking have moved from Rotterdam to Antwerp in recent years. Which means that the Netherlands owes a debt to the rest of Europe", he said to Nieuwsuur.

Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is calling for a pay increase for the municipal councilors in the large Dutch cities. 

Currently councilors in municipalities with 357,001 or more inhabitants receive around 2,300 euros gross. Aboutaleb wants this to increase to 2,800 euros gross, Het Parool reports.

"Officially, councilor is a secondary function, but that is really nonsense", Aboutaleb said on Friday, according to the newspaper. "In practice, the council work takes up three to four days [per week]."

The police raided several properties in The Hague on Thursday in an investigation into the forgery of documents used to make people eligible for homes they are not entitled to. Data of hundreds of people who may of been 'helped' in this way was found. There are also signals that this type of fraudulent practice is happening in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor said to Het Parool.

The police want to make contact with the people who gave anonymous tips regarding the whereabouts of 17-year-old Orlando Boldewijn from Rotterdam, specifically the person who told the police where to find his body. "We would like the anonymous tipsters to report themselves", a police spokesperson said to the Telegraaf.

Several platforms at Rotterdam Central Station were evacuated on Tuesday morning after the discovery of an abandoned bag. The owner of the bag was arrested. According to the police, he is "disturbed" and being questioned. 

Early reports say that wires were seen protruding from the bag. The bag was discovered shortly after 8:00 a.m., just as morning rush hour was getting under way. Platforms 2, 3 and 4 were evacuated as a precaution, the police said on Twitter. Reporters at the scene say that tracks 2 to 7 were cleared.

The final municipal election results for Rotterdam are in, and they are mostly the same as the interim results. The only difference is that anti-Islam PVV lost one seat in the city council, and pro-diversity party DENK gained one. That shift is due to the distribution of residual seats, NOS reports.

The PVV now stands at one seat, and DENK at four. For the rest the results are the same as the provisional results announced on Wednesday evening.

Geert Wilders and his PVV won city council seats seats in each one of the 30 municipalities the party participated in during the municipal elections on Wednesday. In total the PVV currently stands on 74 seats, the Volkskrant reports.

During the previous municipal elections four years ago, the PVV only participated in two municipalities - Almere and The Hague. The party got fewer seats in those two municipalities this time around. In Almere the party dropped from nine to seven seats, and in The Hague from seven to two seats.

An exit poll for Wednesday's city-wide elections suggested that green party GroenLinks was the big winner in Amsterdam, with enough votes to nearly double their city council seats from 6 to 11. Centrist party D66 and left-wing Labour party (PvdA) were the big losers of the night in the capital, each dropping five seats, according to the Ipsos/NOS exit poll.

No train traffic is currently possible to and from Rotterdam due to a major signal- and switch failure. How long this problem will last is not yet clear. NS deployed buses to get travelers out of the cold and to their destination, AD reports.

The fault occurred around 9:30 a.m. on the line between Rotterdam and Gouda, but soon spread to the whole region. No trains are running to and from Rotterdam Centraal.

Rotterdam is the 3rd best city in Europe when it comes to equality, according to a study by online housing startup Spotahome. Amsterdam performed less well, making it to 18th place in the ranking. The Netherlands as a whole is the 7th most equal city in Europe.

Unilever's head office will be in Rotterdam, the company's board of directors announced on Thursday.

Unilever, a British-Dutch multinational, employs 169 thousand people world wide, including 7,500 in the U.K. and around 3 thousand in the Netherlands. The company currently has a shared headquarters in London and in Rotterdam. The entire head office employs 100 people - 60 in London and 40 in Rotterdam. 

The London office will now close.

A medical study among patients with bile duct cancer led by Amsterdam hospital AMC was halted after 14 of the 54 participants died, AD reports.

The study, which was carried out in Amsterdam, Groningen, Maastricht and Rotterdam, started in 2013 and was terminated in 2016 due to the number of deaths. According to AD, the death rate was much higher than expected.

The GroenLinks and PvdA factions in Rotterdam pulled out of a left-wing alliance in the city over a tweet by Islam inspired party Nida in 2014. In the tweet Nida links Israel and Zionism to terrorist organization ISIS.

The left-wing parties in Rotterdam - GroenLinks, PvdA, SP and Nida - teamed up in the Links Verbond in the run-up to the municipal elections next week. They wanted to offer an alternative to right-wing policy.
