The Netherlands has seen a massive surge in the number of international higher education students, with over 80 thousand enrolled at Dutch universities and applied sciences universities during the 2016-2017 academic year. This figure is double the number of foreign students in the country just ten years ago, according to new research from international student organization Nuffic.

Dutch jihad suspect (21) was sentenced to two years in prison by a Rotterdam court on Monday, of which thirteen months may be served out on probation. Since she has already spent one year in remand, she will not have to return to prison. The punishment is lower than what the Public Prosecutor had originally demanded.

Another 20 restaurants around the country were added to the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand list on Thursday, while 19 others were stripped of the title. The list designates the best restaurants that offer exceptionally good food at relatively moderate prices. For the Netherlands, that means a starter, main course, and dessert for 37 euros per person.

A significant number of families with young children are moving away from the large Dutch cities, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. Of the couples who had their first child in 2012 in one of the municipalities outside the four large cities, 14 percent moved to another municipality within four year. In the large cities, that percentage is two to three times as high.

As the Netherlands' Sinterklaas celebrations approaches, municipalities are starting to reveal their plans on how they're dealing with controversial character Zwarte Piet. Most of the municipalities are sticking to blackface or dark brown makeup, according to AD's Piet Atlas. Amsterdam and The Hague will have no blackface Piets, with Amsterdam also designing a completely new costume. Utrecht plans mostly Chimney Piets - with faces covered in soot marks - and a few traditional blackface Piets. Rotterdam is keeping its plans secret until the day before the celebration.

Environmental organization Milieudefensie is recruiting "air guards" in the seven large cities in the Netherlands - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Den Bosch, Eindhoven and Arnhem. These air guards' job will be to make sure their municipalities take steps to improve air quality in their region, the Volkskrant reports.

The municipality of Rotterdam is launching an action plan against aggressive dogs. The plan consists of a number of measures aimed at preventing dog bites. "We don't want to take action only after a serious bite incident occurred, but rather prevent it", alderman Joost Eerdmans said, according to RTV Rijnmond. "That's why we prepared the 'Aggressive Dog Plan of Action' to preventatively tackle dangerous dogs."

Homeowners in the Netherlands are more often satisfied with their homes and their living environment than people living in a rental, according to an analysis by Statistics Netherlands based on figures from 2015 of the Housing Study Netherlands. Of all households in the Netherlands, 87 percent are satisfied with their homes and 82 percent with their living environment.

A massive 93.8 percent of homeowners said they're happy with their home and 86.5 percent said they're happy with their living environment, compared to 76.6 percent and 75.2 percent respectively among tenants.

A construction method used in a parking garage at Eindhoven Airport that collapsed earlier this year, was also used in between 100 and 150 other buildings spread throughout the Netherlands, Paul Rijpstra, chairman of the Netherlands Construction Association, said to RTL Nieuws. Each of these buildings will be carefully inspected in the coming months.

Over the past days several people were robbed after making an appointment to either buy or sell a cellphone through Marktplaats. The robberies happened in Rotterdam, Vlaardingen and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. All victims were threatened with a firearm, the police said in a statement.

On Tuesday evening around 8:00 p.m. two men from Utrecht were robbed at gunpoint in Rotterdam. They had an appointment to buy a cellphone. When they were in a car with the sellers, the sellers pulled out a gun instead of the phone. The Utrecht men were robbed of several thousand euros.

A motorist crashed into the new Luxor Theater in Rotterdam at high speed on Thursday morning. When emergency workers tried to free the wounded man from the car, he vehemently resisted, RTL Nieuws reports.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment. There a blood test was done to see whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the police reported.

The man crashed through the theater's glass front around 3:00 a.m. on Thursday. The damage to the building is being investigated. The police are also investigating how the accident happened.

Home prices in Amsterdam increased sharply in Amsterdam in the third quarter, while the number of home sales in the entire Noord-Holland dropped, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry. Home prices in Amsterdam were 13.8 percent higher, compared to the third quarter last year. Nationwide, home prices increased by 7.6 percent. 

Home sales in the Netherlands reached record high in the third quarter. Over 61 thousand homes were sold, the highest number ever sold in one quarter. These transactions involved over 16 billion euros.

The Public Prosecutor demanded eight years in prison against suspected terrorist Jaouad A. from Rotterdam. The 31-year-old man is charged with preparing for a terrorist crime. "Was he a typical Rotterdam criminal or a potential attacker who wanted to sow death and ruin? We think the last one", the Prosecutor said in court on Thursday, AD reports.

A police officer in Rotterdam turned to the College of Human Rights to fight the ban on police officers wearing a headscarf or hijab with their uniform. The woman argues that this is differential treatment based on religion, NU.nl reports.

The woman works mainly in an administrative post at the Rotterdam police. The police leadership allows her to wear her headscarf while doing administrative tasks, but she has to take it off when she has contact with the public in her uniform.

This percentage is significantly lower in other large Dutch cities like Rotterdam and The Hague, 54 percent and 48.5 percent respectively, Het Parool reports.

A fire on the 7th floor of an apartment building on Söderblomplaats in Rotterdam left one person dead on Thursday night. Seven others were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, AD report.
