A new plan approved by Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan and the city’s aldermen will try to strip the seediness from the Dutch capital’s famed prostitution business by making sex workers more like entrepreneurs, but the plan could turn the city into a brothel owner. The city is teaming up with non-profit organisation HVO-Querido to help guide some women working in the Red Light District into more career-focused people, while also making good on its pledge to reduce abuse and exploitation in the sex industry.

The City of Amsterdam will impose exclusion orders on dealers who sell fake drugs in the late night entertainment districts Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. Dealers who parade disguise flour or detergent as cocaine will receive a weekend ban from the square.

At least one policeman fired his gun at a vehicle in Amsterdam following an attack on two police officers. The officers were checking cars for involvement in high impact crimes during a traffic stop in Nieuwmarkt when the driver suddenly pulled out crashing into one of the cops, police said in a statement.

In 2007 the municipality of Amsterdam launched ‘Project 1012’ to fight against the high level of crime and human trafficking in the postal code area ‘1012’, where De Wallen is also located.
