In the first quarter of this year, free sector rents nationwide increased an average of 4.9 percent compared to a year ago, while some areas around the Randstad saw increases of more than 18 percent, rental broker Pararius said on Wednesday, NU.nl reports.
Train traffic on a number of busy routes in the Randstad is heavily disrupted on Tuesday due to a broken overhead line on the tracks between Weesp and Amsterdam-Zuid. The problems will persist until at least 5:00 p.m., according to NS.

Parts of the Randstad area got more rain on Wednesday than usually falls in the entire month of September. Between 40 and 70 millimeters of rain fell in Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland and Utrecht on Tuesday, according to Weeronline. Nieuwkoop got a massive 130 mm or rain.

A 37-year-old doctor from Leiden is suspected of sexually abusing at least three underage girls and of secretly taking videos and photos of naked patients. The court in The Hague remanded him into custody for 60 days on Wednesday, NU.nl reports.

The association attributes the decrease to a shortage in available homes on the market. A major signal interruption in the Randstad means that no train traffic is possible to and from The Hague Central Station. Passengers have been stuck on a train near the station for over an hour, according to AD.

Commuters trying to navigate the Amsterdam area were advised to allow for plenty of extra time if using the highways on Monday evening after a fire in a Schiphol Tunnel passageway led to the closure of both the tunnel and the southbound A4 motorway towards Den Haag. Drivers were told to divert to the congested A2 to Utrecht, and then take the A12 road west as an alternative, adding 30 to 40 kilometers to the drive home.
There were no reported injuries in the fire, but the fire did damage safety systems in the tunnel.

NS managed to prevent a strike by train drivers and conductors that are members of union VVMC planned for today with a lawsuit. The court in Breda banned the strike for the time being because there is a safety risk when crowds of people are stuck together, for example on platforms. From January 6th the union is allowed to arrange a strike, NRC reports.

The strike is scheduled from the start of the morning until 11:00 a.m. Drivers and conductors stationed in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Hoofddorp will be striking. The union could not say how many people will actually lay down their work, but did say that the willingness to take action is great.
Rents in the private sector in the Netherlands increased again in the third quarter. The average rent increased by 6.2 percent, compared to the same quarter last year, letting agent Pararius reported on Friday, according to the Telegraaf.
The average rent rose from 13.27 euros per square meter in 2015 to 14.11 euros per square meter. According to Pararius director Jasper de Groot, the increase can partly be attributed to a shortage of rental housing for people with mid level incomes in the Randstad.
