A Dutch person with a criminal record has a better chance of finding a job in the Netherlands than someone with a non-Western background and no criminal record, according to a study done by researchers from a number of Dutch universities. Their conclusion is that when looking for work in the Netherlands, ethnicity is more important that criminal records, NOS reports.

The PVV is demonstrating in Arnhem on Wednesday afternoon against the city's decision to appoint Ahmed Marcouch as mayor. Marcouch is not surprised by the opposition from the PVV, but does regret the fact that PVV leader Geert Wilders is using racial hatred to deny Arnhem its choice in leader, he said to newspaper AD.

Suske en Wiske comic strip that leaked out on Saturday caused social media outrage in Belgium and the Netherlands to such an extent that Belgian publisher Standaard Uitgeverij had to publish an apology. The comic strip showed a depiction of a black man that was so stereotypical that it completely overshadowed the first bare breasts ever to appear on the strip, according to RTL Nieuws.

National Police chief Erik Akerboom decided to maintain the ban on headscarves with police uniforms for the time being. He is shocked by the uproar caused by Amsterdam police chief Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg suggesting that headscarves be allowed in an effort to boost diversity in the police, the National Police chief wrote in an internal memo, AD reports.

On Thursday the court in Amsterdam gave sentences of up to 80 hours of community service and fines up to 450 euros for incitement, threats, insult and discrimination against politician Sylvana Simons. The judge said that with the sentences the court wants to make clear that crossing the boundaries of freedom of expression has consequences, NU.nl report.

The Public Prosecutor demanded varying lengths of community service against five men accused of threatening politician Sylvana Simons. Against the man who made a video in which Simons' head is pasted on the bodies of lynched African Americans, the prosecutor demanded 80 hours of community service. Four other men heard 60 hours demanded against them.

The attempted coup in Turkey last year led to a significant increase of discrimination based on political affiliation reports in the Netherlands, according to the Dutch national association against discrimination LVD. Last year the association received 151 reports of discrimination based on political affiliation, compared to only 14 such reports in 2015. Most of these reports came from Turkish-Dutch, NOS reports.

American Republican Steve King, congressman for the state of Iowa, is facing social media outrage following a tweet in support of anti-Islam PVV leader Geert Wilders. 

"Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny", King wrote on Twitter. "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." According to the BBC, King is a strong advocate of ending birthright citizenship, which gives all babies born in the United States citizenship to the country, even if their parents live there illegally.

About 300 Muslim and non-Muslim people gathered in the Al Kabir mosque in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon to show support to the Muslim community in the city. The organizers wanted to to show a counterpoint to the "hateful stories" spreading about the Islamic community, NOS reports.

"We want to show Muslims that they are not alone", Abdou Menebhi of the Collective Against Islamophobia said to NOS. "Politicians, stop saying things like 'the Netherlands is threatened by Islam'. The Netherlands is threatened by extremists from all sides."

In its annual report Amnesty International is sounding the alarm about the rise of populism across the world and the implications it has for human rights. According to the human rights organization, the situation deteriorated significantly over 2016, and that can be attributed political forces rebelling against the established order. Also in the Netherlands populism is a rising problem, the organization said in a brief press conference about the report, NOS reports.

The PVV's legislative proposal to make municipalities only participate in Sinterklaas events in which Zwarte Piet is wearing blackface makeup, could count on almost no support from both the lower house of Dutch parliament and the Dutch government today. Most parties in parliament were against the law and Minister Ronald Plasterk of Home Affairs stated that the bill goes against the Dutch constitution.

Six Iranians have been stuck in a lounge behind passport control at Schiphol airport since Saturday. They were traveling with KLM from Teheran to the United States when president Donald Trump closed the American borders to people from Iran and six other Muslim countries. When they tried to get on their next flight at Schiphol, they were told they could go no further. They can also not leave the airport because they don't have a visa for the Schengen area, NOS reports.

According to him, discrimination is the order of the day in the fire department, recruitment is based on a white male culture and leaders do not intervene or show exemplary behavior. The general image of the letter is that the Amsterdam fire department is great at extinguishing fires, but the general culture is rotten, Het Parool reports.

According to a message his family posted on Facebook, young Tharukshan Selvam could no longer take the racial abuse, extortion, bullying and harassment on social media accounts from his classmates. "The school, care institutions, professional help and guidance, where were you?" his sister Saranya Selvam writes on Facebook.
