It is unclear whether the municipality of Amsterdam will be able to implement a ban on renting entire homes to tourists through sites like Airbnb, as the Amsterdam faction of the PvdA proposed doing in its election program for the upcoming municipal elections.

The Amsterdam faction of labour party PvdA wants to ban holiday apartment rentals in the Dutch capital, including those available through sites like Airbnb. This ban applies to the rental of complete homes, but not the letting of single rooms, meaning the proposal would not affect true Bed & Breakfasts, according to the party's election program released ahead of the 2018 municipal elections, Het Parool reports.
GroenLinks, SP and PvdA want to take some power away from pharmaceutical companies. Parliamentarians Corinne Ellemeet of GroenLinks, Nine Kooman of SP and Sharon Dijksma of the PvdA presented a list of over 20 proposals on how to do so, including banning pharmaceuticals from sponsoring patient associations, NOS reports.
For the coming month, the police will be allowed to search people for illegal weapon possession in large parts of Venlo, even without concrete suspicion, mayor Antoin Scholten announced. This measure was implemented due to unrest in the city following a fatal shooting in the Blerick district last week. "The question is whether preventative searching will restore rest in Blerick", PvdA city councilor Hay Janssen said to NOS. "We underestimated what is happening in Blerick."
State Secretary Barbara Visser of Defense calls on victims of abuses in the Dutch armed forces to come forward, following a report in the Volkskrant about three soldiers who left their unit in Schaarsbergen after being assaulted, bullied, abused and even raped. "Unacceptable. I read the article and had chills. This is not worthy of Defense", the State Secretary said to ANP.
The three left-wing opposition parties are presenting an alternative plan for the Rutte III government agreement on Tuesday. GroenLinks, SP and PvdA's government agreement includes six plans under the title "People over multinationals", NU.nl reports.
The parties' plans mainly have to do with taxes and climate.
The new coalition of VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie are debating their new government agreement with the opposition parties in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, on Thursday. As far as Prime Minister Mark Rutte is concerned, the government agreement is not set in stone and the coalition is open to discussing changes with the opposition parties, NU.nl reports.
Departing Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem is giving up his parliamentary seat and leaving politics, he announced in a letter to Tweede Kamer president Khadija Arib on Tuesday evening. According to Dijsselbloem, he lacks the "firepower" the PvdA needs to function well as opposition party with only 9 seats, NU.nl reports.
Opposition parties did not hesitate to comment on the new government's plans for the Netherlands for the coming years.
Khalid T., PvdA city councilor in Gouda and director of Islamic primary school An Noer, was arrested last week on suspicion of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl. Mosque Nour in Gouda is shocked by his arrest and decided that T. is no longer welcome in the mosque, the mosque chairman said to the Telegraaf.
"Khalid is still a suspect, but he is no longer welcome here", the chairman of the mosque said to the newspaper. "If he still comes in, I'll say that he has to leave, or we'll call the police. We are very shocked by this."

Shocked and sad reactions met Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan's announcement that he is stepping down due to his metastasized lung cancer. Van der Laan (PvdA) announced on Monday afternoon that he is resigning, based on the advice of his doctors. One Amsterdam city council member described the news as "a punch to the face", RTL Nieuws reports.
The VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie - the four parties currently negotiating forming a new Dutch government together - voted against permanently compensating the NIP-test for all pregnant women in the Tweede Kamer on Tuesday, NOS reports. Those four parties together make up a majority in the lower house of Dutch parliament.
Primary school teachers across the Netherlands will strike on Thursday, October 5th in an attempt to push the government to increase their salaries, unions CNV Education and FNV announced.
"Politicians really need to pay up, we want a fair salary and less work pressure in primary education", CNV Education chairman Loek Schueler said to news wire ANP. "The vague commitments politics made so far are insufficient for structurally better education."
The police removed two balaclava-wearing men from the roof of the new Islamic high school in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The two men were protesting against the school by hanging banners from its facade and shouting anti-Islam slogans like "salafism, terrorism". Boh were arrested, NOS reports.

The VVD and PvdA may have found a solution to resolving their disagreement about increasing teachers' salaries in the budget for next year, VVD chairman Halbe Zijlstra said before entering the second round of budget talks at the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday afternoon, AD reports.
Exactly what this solution is, he did not say. "We're now going to see if it really is a solution", Zijlstra said to the newspaper.

The current government plans to make more money available for teacher salaries, primary school education and Defense in a compromise to solve a conflict about teacher salaries between the VVD and PvdA, Prime Minister and VVD leader Mark Rutte confirmed. Though he stressed that there is no deal yet, NU.nl reports.
The negotiations on forming a new Dutch government will happen outside The Hague on Thursday and Friday. The VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie will be meeting on De Zwaluwenberg in Hilversum, the workplace of the Inspector General of the Armed Forces, for those two days, NOS reports.
The Rutte II cabinet is now officially the longest serving Dutch government since the Second World War. On Sunday the VVD-PvdA coalition served a total of 1,749 days - one day more than the previous record holder, the Lubbers III cabinet, NOS reports.
