PvdA politicians Lilianne Ploumen and Kati Piri are cutting their working visit to Morocco short because they were denied access to the coastal cities of Al Hoceima and Nador. They wanted their presence there to express solitary with the Rif protest movement, but the local authorities banned them from entering, NOS reports.

"Our visit was announced two months ago with the national authorities and last night we suddenly heard that this part of our program can not go through", the two Dutch politicians said to the broadcaster.

The Dutch government plans to ban firecrackers before the end of the year, in an effort to make New Year's safer. Firework sellers will also be obliged to give their customers safety goggles and stable firing tubes for rockets, RTL Nieuws reports based in information from insiders in The Hague.

The government is taking this measure after the Dutch Safety Board advised that crackers and rockets be banned, because they cause the most injuries and damage during New Year's.

PvdA alderman Jeroen Brandes of Amstelveen resigned on Friday after it was revealed that he sent sexual messages to a 16-year-old girl, Amstelveen mayor Bas Eenhoorn said in a letter sent to the town council on Tuesday, Het Parool reports.

Brandes, 48, resigned due to "compelling personal reasons" on Friday - just two days after being re-elected to the Amstelveen town council. Now the letter from mayor Eenhoorn reveals that it was because of messages Brandes sent to a now adult young woman who was 16 at the time.

With just a week to go until the municipal elections, both the D66 and GroenLinks have a solid chance to become the biggest party in Amsterdam. Both parties currently stand at 17 percent of Amsterdam votes - good for 9 seats in the city council, according to a poll by Maurice de Hond of Peil.nl, Het Parool reports.

Nine seats is an increase of three seats for GroenLinks, and a loss of 5 seats for the D66.The party that comes out the biggest after the municipal election on March 21st can take the lead in forming a new coalition.

The GroenLinks and PvdA factions in Rotterdam pulled out of a left-wing alliance in the city over a tweet by Islam inspired party Nida in 2014. In the tweet Nida links Israel and Zionism to terrorist organization ISIS.

The left-wing parties in Rotterdam - GroenLinks, PvdA, SP and Nida - teamed up in the Links Verbond in the run-up to the municipal elections next week. They wanted to offer an alternative to right-wing policy.

The European Parliament launched a thorough investigation into the appointment of German lawyer Martin Selmayr as Secretary General of the European Commission, which basically puts him in charge of 33 thousand EU officials. This follows a debate on the matter insisted on by, among others, Dutch European Parliamentarians, AD reports.

The parliamentary inquiry comes on top of an ongoing investigation by the European Ombudsman. The European Parliament will make a statement on the appointment next month, and it may even lead to a vote of no confidence.
