Two men, aged 21 and 24, were sentenced to 137 days in prison for a fake attack on Zwolle rapper Makka. The two threatened Makka on the street with a firearm, but it later turned out that the attack was faked and arranged by the rapper himself, NOS reports.

Further investigation into servers of so-called PGP phones gave the Dutch Public Prosecutor insight into over  million new messages. These messages contain information that can be used in dozens of criminal investigations, the Prosecutor said, NU.nl reports.

PGP stands for 'Pretty Good Privacy', a security standard used on phones sold by Ennetcom. The company promised that messages would be encrypted in such a way that they can not be read by, for example, the police. PGP phones were therefore popular among criminals.

Last year the Rijksrecherche launched investigations into 27 incidents in which police officers shot at a suspect during their work. In these incidents three people were killed and 26 were injured, according to figures the Public Prosecutor released.

A 50-year-old former teacher at a Rotterdam school was arrested on Monday on suspicion of abusing a young girl and possessing child pornography, the Public Prosecutor announced on Friday.

Charges were pressed against the man late last month. Based on this, his home in Gouda was search. "After a short scan" child pornography was found on his data carriers, the Prosecutor said. The man taught the girl "in the past".

Anthony B., a 45-year-old man from Maasdriel suspected of sexually abusing eight children, may have abused more underage kids, the Public Prosecutor said in a proforma hearing against the man. He is also suspected of making child pornography with another 20 children, Omroep Gelderland reports.

The parents of all the children who have been identified in B.'s child pornography have been informed. The material features children between the ages of 8 and 15 years.

The court sentenced 40-year-old Shurandy S. to 20 years in prison for murdering Reduan B., brother of key witness Nabil B. The judge considered it conclusively proven that S. gunned down the innocent man at his business in Amsterdam on March 29th last year, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Netherlands escaped a terrorist attack that could've resulted in "dozens of victims" with the arrest of seven suspects in Arnhem and Weert in September last year, the Public Prosecutor said in court on Thursday - the first proforma hearing in this case. Only three of the six suspects still in detention were present at the hearing, AD reports.

The Public Prosecutor launched an investigation into Jerry M., an athletics coach from Rotterdam who confessed to sexually abusing a number of teenage girls for years, NOS reports.

The 58-year-old man confessed this past summer after an investigation by the sports and judiciary institute ISR. The ISR found that M. abused at least nine victims, the youngest of whom was 11 years old, between 1983 and 2017 at various athletics clubs in Rotterdam and The Hague.

The footage will be used in the investigation into the rain of sparks that caused multiple fires in Scheveningen over New Year's, NOS reports.

Authorities in the Netherlands managed to confiscate 56,525 kilograms of illegal fireworks over the course of 2018, the Public Prosecutor revealed. The total far surpasses the amount seized in 2017 of 40,382.60 kilograms.

It represents a 40 percent increase. Several confiscations in the last week of the year pushed that number up by nearly 5,900 kilos.

The last week of the year represented the third-highest seizure of fireworks by Dutch authorities. Some 12,712 kilos were seized from November 12-18, and a little over 7,920 kg were taken between December 3-9.

Amsterdam Public Prosecutor Nicole Zandee is firmly against the call from some politicians to relax the approach to ecstasy. "Personally, I am not in favor of that", she said in an interview with AT5. "I think it's junk."

Zandee pointed out that ecstasy is still on the first list of the Opium Act and considered a hard drug. "There are also still young people who die through the use of ecstasy."

The Public Prosecution Service will take harsh action against misbehavior and misconduct during New Year's. The Prosecutor considers New Year's as an event, which means that sentence demands can be 75 percent higher, the Telegraaf reports.

People caught being aggressive or violent towards police officers, firefighters or paramedics could face sentences up to 200 percent, the Prosecutor said. First responders keep the Netherlands safe and they must be able to do their jobs without interference, according to the Public Prosecutor.
