It’s obviously one of the most popular but also controversial tourist spots of Amsterdam. The red light district, in Dutch also called De Wallen, is situated in one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam and has around 2000 prostitutes. In 2007 the municipality of Amsterdam launched ‘Project 1012’ to fight against the high level of crime and human trafficking in the postal code area ‘1012’, where De Wallen is also located. After five years, has this initiative paid off?
Three men from Heerlen have been arrested because they would have been guilty of human trafficking.
Prostitution boats at the Utrecht Zandpad have to close on Thirsday. Window Operator Wegra had asked the court in Utrecht to come back on the decision of the municipality to close the boats. However, the administrative judge rejected that request.
The boats have to be closed on Thursday morning at 9:00am because Wegra would be involved in human trafficking. For the same reason Utrecht closed previously boats of two other operators.
The closure of the boats puts 200 women out of a job. At Wegra about 28 jobs are at risk.
A criminal case involving human trafficking and domestic violence ‘failed’ because of a sexual relationship between the police detective and the victim during the case.
