The Netherlands is expected to get its first proper snowfall of this winter on Tuesday. This could cause cancellations for flights from, to or through Amsterdam, KLM warns. Heavy traffic is also expected during rush hour on Tuesday morning and evening, NU.nl reports.

ProRail is pressing charges against a man who parked his semi-trailer truck on a level crossing in Leeuwarden last week Friday, after which , NOS reports.

Six people sustained minor injuries in the accident, including the train driver and the truck driver. The accident also disrupted train traffic and resulted in the entire level crossing installation needing to be replaced.

Startling security camera footage surfaced on Wednesday showing the moment a passenger train collided with a semi-trailer truck. The crash happened in Leeuwarden, Friesland late last week, resulting in several minor injuries.

A large cloud can be seen emanating from the semi-trailer at the moment of impact. The truck was hauling milk powder near a FrieslandCampina dairy facility. The video was first broadcast by Omroep Fryslan.

Rail manager ProRail will be over the coming days, which means less train traffic to and from the airport. The rail works will take four days, starting on Thursday. On Thursday and Friday, trains from Amsterdam will still be able to reach the airport. But over the weekend there will be no train traffic to Schiphol. NS will deploy buses to replace the trains, NU.nl reports.

Schiphol will be inaccessible by train on January 19th and 20th, due to ProRail doing work on the rails around the airport. NS will deploy buses to transport passengers on those days, NU.nl reports.

ProRail will start working on the rails next week Thursday. During the first two days, trains from Amsterdam will still be able to reach Schiphol. But not on Saturday and Sunday, January 19th and 20th.

The Public Prosecutor is investigating a controversial sale of NS land to a real estate entrepreneur in 2014. Two people involved are suspected of non-official bribery around the deal, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor said to newspaper AD. The investigation is not focused on NS or ProRail, according to the newspaper.

NS turning its attention to tackling chaos at train ticket machines at Schiphol airport, caused by foreign tourists with no public transit cards who want to buy tickets to travel to Amsterdam. The Dutch rail company is approaching international travel providers to convince them to sell online train tickets to and from Schiphol to tourists in advance, the Telegraaf reports.

Dutch rail company NS implemented its new timetable for 2019 on Sunday. While most train travelers will still be able to catch their regular train at the usual time, there are some major changes in the new timetable. Here follows a summary of the biggest changes, according to newspaper AD.

NS is now running five intercity direct trains instead of our. The trains between the Netherlands' largest cities Amsterdam and Rotterdam will also be longer. This increases the capacity on this connection by 20 percent.

The Dutch government plans to get rid of all unguarded railway crossings in the country within five years. No one else should become a victim due to the lack of booms and bells, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven wrote to the lower house of Dutch parliament, NOS reports.

Unguarded railway crossings are "just not of this time", Van Veldhoven wrote. "Every accident is one too many", she said. The initial plan was to get rid of unguarded crossings within 10 years. These plans are now being accelerated to within 5 years, "preferably even faster".

ProRail launched a new campaign to warn against the danger of level crossings, both guarded and unguarded. The campaign consists of videos of near-misses. According to ProRail, there were over 3,600 such incidents this year, many of them recorded on camera, NOS reports.

Not all incidents end in a near-miss. A total of 13 people were killed on the railway this year, excluding incidents of suicide, according to the rail manager.

ProRail, NS and other stakeholders believe that the railway timetable can be further increased to cope with passenger growth in the coming years. In a joint exploration of the future, they've established that with a few smart adjustments on the so-called high frequency network, they can run trains every 7.5 minutes, NU.nl reports.

ProRail will be carrying out work around Schiphol this weekend. As a result, no trains will be running on the route between Schiphol Airport and Leiden from Friday to Sunday. On Saturday the airport will be completely inaccessible by train, ANP reports.

On Saturday no trains will run between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Schiphol, Amsterdam Zuid and Schiphol, and Schiphol and Leiden. The Intercity direct between Amsterdam Central Station and Rotterdam will also be down over the weekend.

ProRail is accelerating the plan to run longer trains between Amsterdam and Nijmegen to implement it in the autumn of 2019, three years earlier than initially planned. The route is one of the busiest in the Netherlands, NU.nl reports.

New homes built along the railways must be better protected against the ever increasing vibrations caused by passing train traffic, according to ProRail CEO Pier Eringa. "More new construction and more train traffic can lead to more vibration- and noise inconvenience for our existing and new neighbors", Eringa said in an interview with the Volkskrant.

State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure and Water Management is not impressed by ProRail CEO Pier Eringa's intention to start blocking off unguarded railway crossings at his own initiative. "It is now a tradition for Mr. Eringa to show up with all kinds of plans in the media in the run-up to a parliamentary debate about railways", she said, NOS reports.

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, will discuss the railways on Thursday.

Next week ProRail will start placing concrete blocks at 120 dangerous unguarded railway crossing throughout the country - without waiting for local consultations to end. "Next week we will start closing roads ourselves. That is the safest solution", ProRail CEO Pier Eringa said to the Telegraaf.

The accident took place in Oss, when a Stint belonging to a daycare operator crossed onto railroad tracks and was struck by an oncoming train.

A fifth child and the adult operator of the vehicle were hospitalized with serious injuries.

A fundraiser was launched on Friday for the victims of a f on Thursday morning. By Sunday over 200 thousand euros had been raised, ANP reports.

The fundraiser was started by Nick Nietveld from Almere. He was so shaken by the deaths of the four children that he decided to take action. His goal was to raise 60 thousand euros. That amount was surpassed within a day.

Hundreds of Oss residents gathered at a rail crossing on Braakstraat in Oss on Thursday evening to commemoratein a collision between a train and a cargo bike at the crossing that morning. They left mountains of flowers and stuffed animals, and lit candles for the children, AD reports.

Four children were killed in a collision between a train and a trike on a guarded rail crossing near the Oss-West station in Oss on Thursday morning. Another child and an adult were seriously injured. The trike belonged to a local daycare, witnesses told newspaper AD.

A delegation from NS, ProRail and the Dutch government are in Germany this week to make a 4 hour train trip from Amsterdam to Berlin a reality within the next few years. They hope that shorter travel times will make the rail a real alternative to flying within Europe, NOS reports.
