Josef B. was remanded into custody by a magistrate on Thursday for at least another 14 days while an investigation continues into the family found living in a hidden room on his farm. The man is suspected of depriving a man and his six now-adult children of their physical freedom for nearly a decade, and causing harm to their health, according to the prosecutor's office in Noord-Nederland.

The provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel and Drenthe followed Friesland's example and announced on Monday that they are reversing the nitrogen measures they announced last week. This happened as hundreds of farmers took their tractors to protest at eight provincial governments. "This is asking for further actions", Jan Brouwer, director of the Center for Public Order and Safety, said to NOS.

Doctors in the Netherlands reported a major spike in patients this past June for complaints related to the poisonous oak processionary caterpillars. Primary care physicians in the last week of June saw a 4.5 times more patients than in other weeks, according to care research organization Nivel.

Last year the police experimented in Twente with an approach in which minors were not put in jail after a first offense, but instead had a firm conversation with a police officer in the presence of their parents. This approach will now be implemented nationwide, AD reports.

A 7-year-old boy drowned in a pond in the Overijssel village of Overdinkel on Tuesday evening. First responders tried to resuscitate the child, but it was to no avail.

Emergency services responded to the pond on Elferinksweg just after 9:00 p.m. after receiving a report of a drowning, AD reports. The boy was taken out of the water and paramedics tried to revive him. But it was too late. He died at at the scene.

How the boy ended up in the water is not clear.

An extensive aid program is ready for the two Dutch orphans, aged 2 and 4 years, who were brought back to the Netherlands from a refugee camp in Syria, radicalization expert Annebregt Dijkman said to newspaper AD. The two young children's parents died in Syria. Their mother, Karenia J. from Zwolle, died due to an illness. And their father, a Belgian jihadist, was killed, according to the newspaper.

A police canine team in Almelo found a missing 88-year-old woman from the Overijssel city on Monday night. Authorities then rescued the woman who was conscious, but suffering from symptoms of hypothermia, police said.

The woman, who uses a walker, went missing from the Aletta Jacobsstraat at about 4:15 p.m. “In the night, the missing woman was found by a dog handler. He was searching with his service dog in the vicinity of the location provided [online],” police said in a statement.

A Dutch man was critically injured Wednesday night after he impaled himself on a fence while apparently taking a shortcut to a casino. The Almelo man was walking to a gambling house in Ahaus, Germany when he climbed over a fence that separated a playground from the casino grounds, the District Police in Borken, Germany said in a statement.

He slipped as he tried to hop the fence, and the sharp tip of the fencing pierced his thigh. He remained hanging there, crying out for help shortly after the incident happened at 12:20 a.m.

The police are urgently searching for 16-year-old Melisa from the Gelderland village of Deelen. The girl left her mother in Borne on foot at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday and hasn't been seen since. It is not known where she was heading.

The police consider this disappearance as urgent and worrying, a spokesperson told broadcaster NOS. All means are being used to find this girl.

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.

The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.

There were over 1,635 kilometers of traffic jams across the Netherlands at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, just as the evening rush hour got underway, according to travel association ANWB. A snow storm that started on the west coast in the morning was slowly making its way east, and was still expected to hover over the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Limburg, and parts of Flevoland and Noord-Brabant past 6 p.m.

The school speaks of an "extremely worrying situation" in an email to parents. The school management gave the situation high priority and consulted with the police about follow-up steps, De Gelderlander reports.

Heavily-armed police in the Netherlands stormed onto a stopped passenger train to capture two men sitting in the train car. It was one of three separate incidents in two hours taking place at or near the Zwolle train station, which led to the arrests of five people in total.

Ten different wolves visited the Netherlands in 2018, Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR) concludes after genetic testing on feces and DNA samples taken from bite wounds in attacked sheep. One she-wolf has been hanging around in the Netherlands for months and may be settling here, NU.nl reports.

Up to August traces of eight wolves were found in the Netherlands. Between August and October, two new females were observed, as well as one she-wolf also spotted multiple times earlier in the year. Wolves were spotted in Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel and on the Veluwe.

The first snow of the season fell in Drenthe, Overijssel and Groningen on Tuesday evening. According to Weerplaza, it mostly involved wet snow, and not enough to blanket the landscape. 

The winter showers moved across the country during the course of the evening, but stopped by midnight in most places. 

Wednesday will see mainly dry weather, with sunshine every now and then, according to the weather services. Afternoon temperatures will climb to between 3 and 7 degrees.

Authorities in the picturesque village of Giethoorn are trying to track down reports of fake police officers luring and robbing Chinese tourists. Police say they are looking to speak with any victims and witnesses of similar robberies.

Police say they are trying to track down two or three light complected young men with dark hair. The suspects have used a dark colored four-door sedan, not a hatchback, in the robberies. Each robbery took place in the afternoon, but police did not specify the dates of the crimes.

Activists for road safety placed empty chairs on squares in Zwolle, Nijverdal, Arnhem, Nijmegen and Ede on Wednesday. A total of 65 chairs were placed in Overijssel and 86 in Gelderland. They represented the number of people killed in traffic accidents in the two provinces last year, NOS reports.

Golden retriever Biko has been missing from Geesteren, Overijssel since February. Despite extensive searches, he hasn't been found. Missing animals organization Zoekteam Dogs Lovers now offered a reward of 4 thousand euros for the tip that leads to the missing doggo, RTL Nieuws reports.

The organization is contributing 3 thousand euros to the reward, 500 eruos comes form Biko's owner and the rest was donated by an anonymous dog lover.

One person was killed in stabbing in the Overijssel village of Dedemsvaart during the early hours of Friday morning. A suspect was arrested, ANP reports.

The stabbing happened on Beatrixstraat in a residential area. The crime scene is closed off and the police are investigating.

So far nothing is known about the identity of the victim or the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

Public health institute RIVM again implemented the National Heat Plan for Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Utrecht, Overijssel and Drenthe. Temperatures in these parts of the country will climb to between 30 and 35 degrees in the coming days, and minimums will not drop much below 20 degrees, according to meteorological institute KNMI.

The RIVM warns people in these provinces to stay hydrated, wear thin clothing that provide protection against the sun, stay in the shade, regularly apply sunscreen, and limit physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day.
