After roaming the woods of the small Overijssel town of Lettele for nearly two months, cow Hermien was finally caught on Sunday night. She was anesthetized by veterinarians and transported to a rest home for cows who no longer produce, a spokesperson for owner Herman Jansen said to RTL Nieuws.

Hermien caused danger on the road over the past days, so it was necessary to intervene.

The police evacuated an international train at the station in Wierden, Overijssel on Monday after an aggressive passenger started breaking the train's windows. The man was arrested on the train, ANP reports.

According to NS, the train was on its way from Berlin to Amsterdam. "The man broke a number of the train's windows", a spokesperson for the Dutch rail company said to the news wire. 

Evacuated passengers completed their journey on another train. The damaged train was driven to a location where its windows can be repaired without passengers.

The political opposition grows against the plan to set the opening of the Lelystad airport around April 2019. The ruling parties are under the pressure of their local politicians, who consider April 2019 to be way too soon. 

Members of the Dutch Parliament of the coalition-parties VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie will discuss on the matter next week. According to newspaper Trouw, last week they met with fellow party members from the interested region. The ChristenUnie already came to the conclusion that next year's April is not an option for the opening.

Some 134 people responded to a call for emergency volunteers in Kampereiland where two water boards said sandbags were needed to reinforce flood protection in the area. The volunteers filled 10 thousand sandbags in a matter of hours, and placed the bags around the dykes there by 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

"We have practiced before, but there's more to it when it's for real," one volunteer told RTV Oost. "Compliments go to everyone who helped!" the volunteer said, noting that the conditions were wet, muddy, and generally unpleasant.

All five major storm surge gates in the Netherlands were closed in the wake of a storm that brought wind gusts as strong as 141 kilometers per hour. It is the first time all five flood defenses were simultaneously closed, the country's infrastructure agency, Rijkswaterstaat, announced on Wednesday.

A 46-year-old man from Zoetermeer killed himself and his 4-year-old son by jumping in front of an oncoming train in Haarle, Overijssel on Saturday night, the police said in a statement.

Around 9:30 p.m. the police received a report of a suicide on the rails near Oude Deventerweg in Haarle. A few minutes later a man and his son were reported missing from a vacation home on a bungalow park in the area. At the rails, responding officers found the bodies of a man and a child. They were identified as the two missing from the bungalow park.

The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam already admitted eight people with a total of 10 injured eyes. And dozens of people were admitted to hospital with burns and other firework related injuries.

Frozen ice on the road was the likely cause of a car skidding into a drainage canal in Wanneperveen, Overijssel on Friday. The alert mother who was behind the wheel quickly managed to rescue three kids from the vehicle as it took on more and more water.

She managed to escape out of the vehicle’s window, and then quickly pulled each child out of the vehicle one at a time, according to news outlet De Gelderlander. A family member arrived on scene after the 10 a.m. accident with warm clothing.

The province of Overijssel is investigating whether ProRail can be held liable for mistakes made in the construction of a renewed railway between Kampen and Zwolle, the Telegraaf reports. The rail manager announced on Thursday that the foundation under the railway is not stable enough to handle the fast electric trains intended to use the line.

Some 14 members of anti-Islamic organization Pegida Nederland held an early Sunday morning protest action against the construction of a mosque, with at least one person accused of dousing the site with pig's blood. A video that the organization posted on Twitter and Facebook shows a man disguised as a priest planting a wooden cross at the mosque site, and then using a toilet brush to splatter the blood on the cross and around the location.

The first night frost of the season happened in Twente overnight. According to Weerplaza, the mercury dropped to 2.3 degrees Celsius in Twente, and a low temperature of -1.2 degrees was measured at 10 centimeters above the grass.

The first frost of the season happened a bit later than last year, when the first below 0 temperatures of autumn were measured on October 6th. In 2015 the first frost was in September already.

An autumn storm that hit the Netherlands on Thursday mostly caused damage in the east and north of the country. The biggest disruption caused by the storm, was when tents set up for horse event CSI Salland were blown down in Mariënheem, sending a number of expensive horses running, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Council of State reprimanded the province of Overijssel for shooting large numbers of geese in various natural areas. According to the Council, the highest administrative court in the Netherlands, the provincial government did not conduct enough research into the consequences of killing these animals on such a large scale, ANP reports.

The Council ordered the province to do this research within six months.

A 55-year-old man was found dead in his home in the Overijssel town of Slagharen on Sunday morning. The police are investigating whether he was murdered.

The home is located on Geert Michelsweg. According to Tubantia, the police closed down the street on Sunday morning and a team from the Netherlands Forensic Institute and two fire trucks were at the scene.

On Tuesday a dog owner abandoned a wounded 6-year-old girl after her dog attacked the child on the outskirts of Diepenheim, Overijssel. The dog was not on a leash when it attacked the girl, leaving her with deep bites on her leg, the police said.

The incident happened around 5:00 p.m. in a wooded area on Kleidijk. The owner of the dog, an older woman of small stature, took her dog and left the girl to her fate. The girl could not tell the police what type of dog it was, only that it was a big dark colored dog with light spots. 

The girl was treated in hospital.

An asylum seeker living in the Netherlands was convicted of the rape and attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl in Kampen, a panel of judges in Zwolle, Overijssel ruled on Thursday. The Sudanese-born man, Samuel T., was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the attack in the early morning hours of September 4, 2016. During the trial, T., 33, said he would accept any punishment and was not planning an appeal.

A Tesla Model S in autopilot mode rear-ended a truck on the A1 highway in Bathmen, Overijssel on Tuesday, the owner of the car Blom Opleidingen confirmed to RTV Oost. According to the driver, the accident had nothing to do with the fact that the car was in autopilot. No one was injured, NU.nl reports.

The PVV is turning its attention to local governments. Next year the anti-Islam party wants to participate in municipal elections in Rotterdam, Enschede, Almelo, Twenterand and Urk, party leader Geert Wilders announced on Twitter on Saturday. The party will also participate in The Hague and Almere. 

Until now the PVV was only represented in the city councils of The Hague and Almere, according to the Volkskrant. But in December the party announced a change in strategy. The PVV wants to be part of at least five to ten municipalities per province.

When 55-year-old Eddy Rietman from Colmschate glanced out of his kitchen window around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, he was shocked to see two masked men planting explosives in a Rabobank ATM across the street. As the upstanding citizens that they are, Rietman's wife phoned the police while Eddy snuck onto his balcony to film what happened on his phone.

Eddy hid himself out of sight on the balcony and recorded the ATM bombers on his phone. "I don't think they had guns with them, but of course you never know with that ilk." Rietman said to newspaper De Stentor.

A judge in Overijssel was reprimanded and had her Twitter account suspended after she responded to EenVandaag naming PVV leader Geert Wilders politician of the year with the word: "Knettergek", which loosely translates to "madness" in English. 

The court in Overijssel called the tweet a "misplaced remark" and announced that the judge in question will no longer be tweeting on her own initiative. Judge Syliva Taalman was active under the Twitter account @iRechter for years, according to NOS. She used the account to show people what working as a judge is like.

Dead ducks found in two places in Overijssel were diagnosed with bird flu, water board Drenthe Overijssel Delta announced. The dead birds all carried the bird flu variant H5N8, a very contagious strand, AD reports.

Over 60 dead ducks were found in the municipality of Kampen, on Bosjessteeg. And seven were found in the municipality of Zwartewaterland in Machinevaart. Both municipalities announced that no bird flu was found in surrounding poultry farms.
