All five major storm surge gates in the Netherlands were closed in the wake of a storm that brought wind gusts as strong as 141 kilometers per hour. It is the first time all five flood defenses were simultaneously closed, the country's infrastructure agency, Rijkswaterstaat, announced on Wednesday.
A 46-year-old man from Zoetermeer killed himself and his 4-year-old son by jumping in front of an oncoming train in Haarle, Overijssel on Saturday night, the police said in a statement.
Around 9:30 p.m. the police received a report of a suicide on the rails near Oude Deventerweg in Haarle. A few minutes later a man and his son were reported missing from a vacation home on a bungalow park in the area. At the rails, responding officers found the bodies of a man and a child. The province of Overijssel is investigating whether ProRail can be held liable for mistakes made in the construction of a renewed railway between Kampen and Zwolle, the Telegraaf reports. The rail manager announced on Thursday that the foundation under the railway is not stable enough to handle the fast electric trains intended to use the line.
Some 14 members of anti-Islamic organization Pegida Nederland held an early Sunday morning protest action against the construction of a mosque, with at least one person accused of dousing the site with pig's blood. A video that the organization posted on Twitter and Facebook shows a man disguised as a priest planting a wooden cross at the mosque site, and then using a toilet brush to splatter the blood on the cross and around the location.

The Council of State reprimanded the province of Overijssel for shooting large numbers of geese in various natural areas. According to the Council, the highest administrative court in the Netherlands, the provincial government did not conduct enough research into the consequences of killing these animals on such a large scale, ANP reports.
The Council ordered the province to do this research within six months.
A 55-year-old man was found dead in his home in the Overijssel town of Slagharen on Sunday morning. The police are investigating whether he was murdered.
The home is located on Geert Michelsweg. According to Tubantia, the police closed down the street on Sunday morning and a team from the Netherlands Forensic Institute and two fire trucks were at the scene.
On Tuesday a dog owner abandoned a wounded 6-year-old girl after her dog attacked the child on the outskirts of Diepenheim, Overijssel. The dog was not on a leash when it attacked the girl, leaving her with deep bites on her leg, the police said.
The incident happened around 5:00 p.m. in a wooded area on Kleidijk. The owner of the dog, an older woman of small stature, took her dog and left the girl to her fate. The girl could not tell the police what type of dog it was, only that it was a big dark colored dog with light spots.
The girl was treated in hospital.
An asylum seeker living in the Netherlands was convicted of the rape and attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl in Kampen, a panel of judges in Zwolle, Overijssel ruled on Thursday. The Sudanese-born man, Samuel T., was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the attack in the early morning hours of September 4, 2016. During the trial, T., 33, said he would accept any punishment and was not planning an appeal.
An underage girl who ran away from her home in America was found safe at the train station in Zwolle, Overijssel on Saturday. She was found using someone else’s passport, prompting authorities to arrest her for identity theft.
A Tesla Model S in autopilot mode rear-ended a truck on the A1 highway in Bathmen, Overijssel on Tuesday, the owner of the car Blom Opleidingen confirmed to RTV Oost. When 55-year-old Eddy Rietman from Colmschate glanced out of his kitchen window around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, he was shocked to see two masked men planting explosives in a Rabobank ATM across the street. As the upstanding citizens that they are, Rietman's wife phoned the police while Eddy snuck onto his balcony to film what happened on his phone.
Eddy hid himself out of sight on the balcony and recorded the ATM bombers on his phone. "I don't think they had guns with them, but of course you never know with that ilk." Rietman said to newspaper De Stentor.
