At least 12 people were injured during a fire in the Heycop home and care center in Breukelen on Monday evening. Eleven people were taken to UMC Utrecht's emergency hospital. The victims sustained various injuries, most of them smoke inhalation related, a spokesperson for the local safety office Veiligheidsregio Utrecht said to ANP.

Over the past year multiple elderly people were abused in nursing home De Leeuwenhoek in Rotterdam by staff and fellow residents, Trouw reports based on witness testimony and supporting documents.

The abuse ranges from verbal aggression to physical violence, according to the newspaper. An anonymous source also told Trouw that staff steal from the elderly residents and that the residents sometimes don't get the medicine they need.

Interim Amsterdam mayor Jozias van Aartsen wants to implement firework-free zones around hospitals and nursing homes in the Dutch capital next year, he said in an interview with the Telegraaf.

According to Van Aartsen, such firework-free zones resulted in a drastic reduction in firework related problems and incidents in The Hague, where he was previously mayor. The Amsterdam city council already approved expanding these zones in the city, he said to the newspaper.

A 21-year-old nursing home worker  with overdoses of insulin is now suspected in two other fatal cases, the public prosecutor announced on Thursday. Rahiied A. was already suspected of causing the death of one person, and having possible involvement in the deaths of four others.

There are at least six known cases where a victim survived.

People who know A. describe him as a "family person" and an "ambitious boy".

A 21-year-old man from Rotterdam was arrested for euthanizing a patient without her permission or that of a relative, which the Public Prosecutor is charging as murder. The nursing home employee is also suspected of attempting to do the same to two other patients. The suspect worked at a number of care institutions, the Prosecutor said in a statement on Monday.

According to the report, these elderly people would like to get out of the nursing home every now and again, but can't because there's no one to help them or their health problems don't allow it, RTL Nieuws reports.

Elderly care organization Amsta is opening a special home for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elderly people in the Dr Sarphati house in Amsterdam. "Here you do not have to explain how you lived your life", the organization said to Het Parool. The home opens on Wednesday and will initially have room for 8 LGBT elders.
