Snowfall across the Netherlands is increasingly causing train traffic problems. NS has seven disruptions listed on its site, all with delays up to an hour.

No train traffic is possible from and to Zaandam due to "multiple disruptions". This morning NS said that they hope to sort these problems out by 10:00 a.m. "It is not yet known how long this will last", the rail company now says. Buses are transporting passengers between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Zaandam.

The snowy weather in the Netherlands caused fewer traffic problems on the roads than expected on Monday morning. By 9:00 a.m. there were very few traffic jams left on Dutch roads. Public transit across the country was busier than usual during morning rush hour. According to the ANWB, many people listened to advice to stay off the roads, the Telegraaf reports.

NS is dealing with multiple train traffic disruptions on Monday morning. The rail company currently has seven different train warnings listed on its site. Many cancelations, delays and platform switches are expected.

No train traffic is currently possible to and from Zaandam. According to NS, this is due to "multiple disruptions". The rail company hopes to get trains restarted in this area by 10:00 a.m.

The Netherlands was blanketed in snow over the weekend and more snow is expected this afternoon. Meteorological institute KMNI issued a code orange weather warning of extremely dangerous weather. And the Rijkswaterstaat warns people to rather work from home today if possible.

A code yellow weather warning is currently in effect for the entire country. Motorists are warned to to be careful of icy and slippery roads.

ProRail is taking a number of measures to improve the flow of passengers through Schiphol train station, in an effort to keep up with the airport's growth. The first to be implemented, is the installation of an LED screen above the platform, which will show travelers where an oncoming train's doors will be located, AD reports.

The access gates on Amsterdam Central Station are locked from today. From now on travelers will have to check in with their public transit card to gain access to the station and platforms, NOS reports.

People only visiting the station to say goodbye to someone, or visit one of the stores in the station, can check in and out for free within one hour. 

The intention is to also lock the gates at Amsterdam Sloterdijk station before the end of the year. According to NOS, then 75 of the over 400 train stations in the Netherlands will have locked gates.

Road users should expect a very busy rush hour on Monday morning. No train traffic is possible on one of the busiest routes in the country, due to maintenance work that is taking longer than expected. And rain and wind will only add to the problems.

The Netherlands must take the lead in developing the hyperloop by making sure that the country gets the first test track for this high speed transport system, a number of Dutch companies wrote in a letter to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, which covers Transport, NU.nl reports.

ProRail will rebuild and revamp large parts of Amsterdam Central Station, Amsterdam Amstel Station and Schiphol Station in the coming years, a spokesperson for ProRail confirmed to NU.nl after reports in the Telegraaf. This is necessary to accommodate the new 10-minute train schedule ProRail and NS plan to implement.

The entrance gates at Utrecht Central Stations will be locked from Monday morning. From now on, people can only access the platforms at the station by checking in with their public transit card. Utrecht Central Station is the 71st station in the Netherlands on which this measure is implemented, NOS reports.

NS and ProRail are expanding their experiment with running a train every 10 minutes between Amsterdam, Utrecht, Den Bosch and Eindhoven to seven days a week from December. The rail companies started out by testing this 10 minute train schedule only on Wednesdays, and the first results were very positive, ANP reports.

NS presented the new model sprinter, produced by Spanish manufacturer CAF, in Amsterdam on Thursday. The first few of the total of 118 trains are now in the Netherlands for testing, Het Parool reports.

The new generation sprinters include a new LED lighting system that automatically adjusts to daylight, power sockets and USB connectors. The trains' bathrooms are larger, and it is also easier for people with disabilities to get onto and off the trains, according to NOS.

A graffiti artist tagged 17 NS trains while they were parked in Haarlem over the past months, causing over 400 thousand euros in damages. The police posted photos of his work online, calling on the tagger to come forward. If he does not do so by November 1st, the police will publish surveillance camera footage of him, the National Unit Noordwest said on Facebook.

NS and ProRail's experiment with running a train every 10 minutes on the route between Amsterdam, Utrecht, Den Bosch and Eindhoven, is showing very positive first results. The trains run mostly on time and cancellations are on par with the national average, ANP reports.

NS intends to close the entrance gates at all major train stations by the end of the year. This started with a three day test at Amsterdam Central Station, which started on Thursday and ends at Saturday. If this test goes well, the gates will be locked permanently at Amsterdam CS from December, meaning that travelers can only enter the station by checking in with their public transit card, NOS reports.

State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Infrastructure gave a remarkable answer to parliamentary questions by a PVV MP about NS' decision to use gender-neutral terms in their announcements.

PVV parliamentarian Roy van Aalst wanted to know hom many people are working on implementing the new gender-neutral form of address of "dear travelers" in NS announcements, according to AD.

The first autumn storm to hit the Netherlands this season, is starting to take its toll across the country. Schiphol had to close down a number of runways due to the strong winds. The A13 highway between Delft and Rotterdam was closed for a time after a tree fell on a car. And NS is running fewer trains on a number of routes.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the Netherlands' coastal provinces on Wednesday morning due to very strong winds brought by the season's first autumn storm.

The northern coastal area can see gusts of over 120 kilometers per hour, the KNMI warns. The Provinces of Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen and in the Wadden- and IJsselmeer areas can expect winds around 100 kilometers per hour.

A person was found dead on the toilet of a train at Amsterdam Central Station on Thursday afternoon, the Amsterdam police announced on Twitter.

The person was found on an intercity direct, which arrived at Amsterdam Central Station from Breda and Rotterdam around 1:00 p.m., according to Het Parool. 

The person has not yet been identified. The cause of death is also still unclear. The police conducted an investigation in the train. Track 14 is closed for the investigation.

On Wednesday morning NS and ProRail started an experiment on running trains on the busy route between Amsterdam, Utrecht, Den Bosch and Eindhoven every 10 minutes. The experiment went well during the first morning rush hour, according to the rail organizations, AD reports.

According to NS, the waiting times for travelers were a bit shorter this morning. "The crowds were similar to a normal working day", NS said. A spokesperson added: "We had no cancelations or significant delays. We'll keep a close eye on it for the rest of the day."

The Fyra trains in NS's failed high speed railway project are getting a new owner, according to newspaper AD. Italian railway company Trenitalia is buying 17 of the 19 trains, train manufacturer AnsaldoBreda confirmed to the newspaper.

According to Italian media, Ternitalia is paying about a third of the price that NS originally paid for the trains. The compensation NS will receive amounts to around 20 million euros, AD calculates.

Dutch rail company NS is preparing for its busiest month in the year. The rail company expects to transport over 35 million passengers in September, as the summer holidays end and people get back to school and work. Overcrowded trains, like traffic jams on the highways, are to be expected, CEO Roger van Boxtel said to newspaper AD.

NS's group return tickets were intended to encourage families and football teams to take the train to their destination instead of a car, but instead the tickets became easy fraud for bargain hunters and brokers, AD reports. NS estimates that between 15 thousand and 20 thousand travelers use these group tickets fraudulently each month, according to the newspaper.
