People who went to see the giant marionettes of Royal de Luxe in Leeuwarden on Sunday, were left stranded by a train disruption. A faulty overhead line meant very limited trains between Zwolle and Meppel, which forms part of the route between Zwolle and Leeuwarden, NU.nl reports.

According to ProRail, about half a kilometer of overhead line was pulled down by a train. This brought train traffic on the route to a complete standstill for a time. From around 6:30 p.m. a limited number of trains could run on one rail on the route.

There will be no trains running between Utrecht and Rotterdam Centraal, and between Utrecht and The Hague this week. This line is closed until August 6th due to maintenance on the track around Gouda, NOS reports.

Around 75 percent of the railway around Gouda will be renewed, which includes replacing points, rails, sleepers and rail gravel. This is only possible if train traffic is completely halted. NS and ProRail chose this week for this task, as it is summer holidays and many people are away on vacation.

Fewer trains are running to and from Schiphol on Thursday morning due to a signal failure. Travelers are advised to take extra travel time into account. NS expects the problem to be solved by 10:30 a.m.

A broken train also means that no Intercity Direct trains are running between Schiphol and Breda. When this will be fixed is not yet clear.

Other problems on the track include fewer Sprinters between Tilburg in Boxtel, and no Intercity trains between Eindhoven and Weert. Both these issues should be resolved by 10:30 a.m., according to NS.

Dutch rail company NS is benefiting from the high property prices in the Netherlands. The company recently sold 16 hectares of land in Utrecht for an estimated amount between 90 million and 125 million euros, the Telegraaf reports.

The property, Cartesiusdriehoek, was sold to real estate developers MRP and Ballast Nedam. NS refused to comment on the amount involved. The rail company previously used the land to store and maintain train wagons.

MRP and Ballast Nedam plan to build 2,600 houses, a school and hospitality space on the property.

NS wants to reduce crowds in rush hour trains by making train tickets for outside rush hour cheaper. That will cost 35 million euros that NS does not have. CEO Roger van Boxtel is therefore turning to the government, RTL Nieuws reports.

Passengers that travel outside rush hour should pay 40 percent less for their tickets, Van Boxtel thinks. This will encourage people to avoid trains during their busiest point and thereby result in a better distribution of passengers.

The purchase of a train ticket does not entitle you to a seat, the court in Utrecht ruled in a lawsuit filed by ConsumentenClaim against Dutch rail company NS. According to the court, a ticket only entitles you to transport. "That result is also achieved. The way in which the transport takes place is not determined by law", the judge said, NOS reports.

A container ship crashed into a railway bridge in Gouda on Sunday. The accident halted train traffic between Gouda and Boskoop on Sunday, and fewer trains will run on this route on Monday, NS reports. The rail company hopes that train traffic will return to normal by 6:30 p.m.

The bridge shifted on its foundation due to the accident, and the safety net is visibly torn. "The bridge is damaged to such an extent that specialized technicians have to take measurements", ProRail said on Sunday.

NS is launching an experiment with a travel planner app that will help travelers find a seat on a busy train. The app, called zitplaatszoeker, shows with the colors green, yellow, or orange how likely you are to find a seat on which cart of the train, RTL Nieuws reports.

The experiment starts on the route between Arnhem and Den Bosch. NS deliberately chose this route because "it often happens that passengers have to stand on one side of the train, while there are still seats on the other side".

Major work needs to be done on the railways of the high speed line in order to keep trains running on time. That will also require major investment, according to an external study NS and ProRail had done, RTL Nieuws reports.

The number of train tracks at Amsterdam Centraal will be reduced from the current 15 to 9, and two new train tracks will be built in Amsterdam Zuid, State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure announced on Thursday, the Volkskrant reports.

The track reduction at Amsterdam Centraal forms part of major renovations at the station. By reducing the number of tracks, platforms can be widened and the capacity can increase, according to the State Secretary. The number of switches will also be reduced. More trains must thus be able to use the station in less time.

A petition calling for a high speed train connection between Amsterdam and Berlin was signed over 6,400 times. According to initiator Pelle Berting, making such a high speed train really compete with air traffic holds all kinds of benefits to the climate.

There is already a high speed train between Amsterdam and Paris that makes the journey in three hours. And soon you'll also be able travel between Amsterdam and London by train in around four hours.

Transit company Arriva closed the toilets on its trains to prevent poop and urine freezing in the collection system in the extremely cold weather the Netherlands is currently experiencing. Stickers on the toilets inform passengers that they cannot be used, NOS reports.

Closing the toilets is a precaution, an Arriva spokesperson said to the broadcaster. "It is really extremely cold for our country. So we are preventing damage and the trains having to be taken out of service." Arriva expects this measure will be in effect until Saturday.

Utrecht Central Station
Feb 28 '18 12:42

Part of platform 18/19 at Utrecht Central Station was closed on Wednesday morning because of a burst water pipe. Water came flooding through the roof, and because of the freezing cold temperatures, created something of an ice rink right in front of the stairs leading to the platform, NOS reports.

The burst pipe runs through the upper station hall and supplies the restaurants, shops and toilets with water. Due to the burst, which happened around 5:00 a.m., no coffee or tea was available at the station on Wednesday morning. The problem was fixed around noon.
