The monthly costs of driving an electric car in the Netherlands is currently only 1 percent higher than the costs of driving cars that run on petrol or diesel, according to car leasing company LeasePlan's annual Car Cost Index. The only European country doing better than the Netherlands on this front is Norway, where the costs of electric- and internal combustion cars are equal.

The Tilburg man convicted in the Netherlands, and connected to the suicide of Canadian teenager Amanda Todd, plans to drop his appeal against his conviction in order to speed up a potential extradition to Canada, according to AD. Aydin C., now 41, was convicted in 2017 and sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison for the sexual abuse of 34 underage girls.

A Dutch ship rescued the crew of one of two burning oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, the Dutch shipping company Acta Marine from Den Helder confirmed to NOS after reports in the Telegraaf. There were explosions on two oil tankers in the Gulf region on Thursday. The cause of the explosions has not yet been officially confirmed, but the general belief is that they were attacks.

Consumers' association Consumentenbond filed a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority against Google. According to the union, Google 'tricks' Android users into giving permission for their smartphones' location to be used, which is against the law, ANP reports.

Research by Consumentenbond showed that 54% of Dutch Android users have the function 'web&app' enabled. This is used to keep track of location history. The majority of these users did not know that this option was activated, the Dutch association said.

The Stichting Werkgroep Herkenning - the Foundation for Recognition - is calling on the Dutch government to apologize for the abuse of "kraut girls", or "moffenmeiden" as they are called in the Netherlands, after the Second World War. "Moffenmeiden" refers to women and girls who had any form of friendly relationship with German soldiers during the war.

The Norwegian police are investigating this scenario, assistant commissioner Bjarte Walle said to Het Parool.

Missing Dutch man Arjen Kamphuis was in Vikeså in the south of Norway with two other people on August 30th, a witness said to Norwegian newspaper VG. That is 10 days after Kamphuis went missing, and the same day his phone was turned on in the area for a brief time, NOS reports.

According to the witness, there was a good atmosphere and Kamphuis spoke Dutch and German with his two companions. They didn't have backpacks with them.

Items belonging to missing Arjen Kamphuis found in Norway on Tuesday included his identity documents, according to Norwegian television station TV2. The police did not say exactly what items were found. Two Dutch police officers arrived in Bodø to help in the investigation into the Amsterdam computer expert's disappearance, Het Parool reports.

The Norwegian police found items that belong to missing Dutch man Arjen Kamphuis, who disappeared while vacationing in Norway on August 20th. Exactly what items were found, the police did not say. The belongings were found by a fisherman on Tuesday night. They were found near the coast in the vicinity of Kvaenflaget, a small mountain between Fauske and Rognan, ANP reports.

The cellphone of Arjen Kamphuis, whose been missing in Norway since August 20th, was turned on for a short time last week, the Dutch police reported based on investigation. 

The 46-year-old computer expert from Amsterdam went hiking in Norway last month. He was set to return to the Netherlands on August 22nd, but never made it back. His employer reported him missing on August 29th, according to the police. He was last seen in Bodø on August 20th.

The Norwegian police deployed a special unit to help in the search for missing Dutch man Arjen Kamphuis. The 47-year-old computer expert from Amsterdam was last seen in the north of the country on August 20th, RTL Nieuws reports.

At this stage the police do not think that Kamphuis' disappearance was a crime, according to the broadcaster. Yet they've now deployed the Kripos unit in the search. The unit investigates organized crime and is often used in missing person cases.

The Dutch Safety Board launched an investigation into an oil tanker colliding with a jetty at the port of Rotterdam on June 23rd. Some 200 tons of oil leaked into the water after the collision. The Safety Board will investigate both the cause of the collision, and the control of environmental damage after the oil spill, NU.nl reports.

A Norwegian couple accused of causing trouble on a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Panama were arrested when the plane landed to Panama, and returned to the Netherlands under police escort. The flight crew said the woman punched the purser, tried to kick her in the face, yank her hair, and spat at the co-pilot.

While the man was freed for insufficient evidence in a Tuesday arraignment hearing, the woman was remanded into custody at least until the next court status hearing on January 18.

The drugs were hidden in secret compartments in a car they tried to take into Norway by ferry.

The Netherlands will provide the first space outside the United States to test engines for the Joint Strike Fighter jet programme, the Dutch Defense ministry announced on Thursday. A test facility will be built in Woensdrecht, Noord-Brabant with equipment, spare parts and training provided by engine manufactuer Pratt & Whitney.

The ministry, Noord-Brabant as well as the Economic Affairs ministry will invest in a maintenance workshop and testing ground. It is expected to provide work for specialists through 2049, the Defense ministry stated.
