Amsterdam has the most to offer of all municipalities in the Netherlands when it comes to culture. Maastricht and Leeuwarden are in second and third place respectively, according to the new Atlas for Municipalities presented in Leeuwarden on Wednesday afternoon, Het Parool reports.

Among the provinces, Groningen has the biggest cultural offering, followed by Zeeland and Noord-Holland. Flevoland is last on the ranking.

A power outage in Amsterdam severely affected operations at the city's Schiphol Airport on Sunday. The problems began early in the morning, with electricity restored by 4:30 a.m., but inbound flights were put on hold, and arrivals were set to be reduced through at least 11 a.m. causing a knock-on effect to the airport's scheduled flights.

Some 67 departures and 66 arrivals were cancelled through 8 p.m., as well as dozens of delays, according to the airport.

Almost all regions in the Netherlands saw economic growth last year. The Groningen region was the only one to see its economy shrink. The regions around Eindhoven and Almere saw the strongest growth, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. 

In both the Eindhoven and Almere regions, the economy grew by 4.9 percent last year compared to 2016. In Zuidoost-Noord-Brabant - Eindhoven and its surroundings - last year's economic growth was mainly supported by industry and business services. In Almere, lease companies in particular contributed to the economic growth.

The number of tourists that stayed in accommodation in the Netherlands last year increased by nearly 9 percent to 42 million. That is the strongest growth since 2006, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday.

Statistics Netherlands' figures do not include overnight stays in accommodations with fewer than five rooms, which means that most tourists booking accommodation through online platforms like Airbnb are not included in these figures.

Two robbers crashed their car into a supermarket in the Noord-Holland town of Wormerveer on Tuesday morning, the Zaanstad police said on Twitter.

The incident happened around 8:00 a.m., shortly before the supermarket on Krommenieerweg opened. Once inside, the robbers threatened the store employees. The fled on foot, with an unknown amount of stolen goods. No one was injured, the police said to NH Nieuws.

A 6-year-old boy was killed in a major traffic accident on the N99 near Breezand in Noord-Holland on Thursday. Four other people were injured and taken to hospital, the police said on Twitter.

The accident happened late in the morning on the road between Den Helder and Den Over, near Breezand, according to AD. A truck and multiple cars were involved in the collision. The police, fire brigade, an air ambulance and various ambulances responded to the scene.

The police are investigating exactly what happened.

Primary school teachers in Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Flevoland are striking today for higher salaries and a lower workload. Thousands of teachers are expected to march through Amsterdam, from the Waterlooplein to the Museumplein, AD reports.

The march underlines that primary education is still on 'code red', according to educational organizations. They say that the quality of education is under severe pressure due to the rising teacher shortage.

A Bulgarian woman was found without a pulse, bleeding on the street late Friday night in Zaandam after an older man entered a nearby police station to alert authorities of the stabbing. The man, also from Bulgaria, was holding a bloody knife.

Police took the 44-year-old man into custody as a suspect in the stabbing, while officers responded to the victim and resuscitated her. When police arrived, they found the woman without a pulse on the Czaar Peterstraat.

Firefighters evacuated dozens of apartments Wednesday night after a fire broke out in the ventilation system of Caffe Oslo near the Surinameplein. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, but there were no serious injuries, the fire department said.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 8 p.m. It took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze as they first had trouble locating it.

Two people were found dead in a home on A. Le Notrelaan in the Noord-Holland town of Velserbroek on Tuesday night. The police are investigating.

The police are still working on identifying the victims, the Kennemerland police said on Twitter. So far no information was released about how they died.

A neighbor told Haarlems Dagblad that a Syrian family with one child lives in the home. A number of bystanders reported hearing shots fired. According to the Telegraaf, one of the victims was found on the home's balcony.

A bloodied, beheaded doll was found in front of the Emir Sultan Mosque in Amsterdam Noord early Thursday morning. The doll's body, found laying below the severed head attached by metal hook to a fence, had a note denouncing "Islamization" pinned to it.

"I'm asking you not to worry about this incident," mosque president Kamber Şener wrote on Facebook, saying they reported the incident to police. "I hope they will find the perpetrators as soon as they can," he continued, asking for the city to unite against such incidents.

The prospect of slippery roads prompted the Dutch national weather service, KNMI, to issue another Code Yellow weather warning. The caution is in effect across the Netherlands from 4 p.m. on Tuesday through noon on Wednesday.

Snow is also possible in the center of the country, and continuing to the east and south. The eastern provinces have the highest likelihood for icy roadways overnight, but with winter showers expected everywhere in the Netherlands drivers were told to be particularly careful.

The municipality of Amsterdam has decided to decrease the maximum number of nights a private home may be rented. The 50 percent reduction takes the number of nights from 60 down to 30 beginning on New Year's Day 2019, the city said in a statement.

"I know that the decreasing of the limit is not the solution to the fuss in the city. But at least this ruling could diminish the nuisance caused by tourists in certain districts," said Laurens Ivens, the Amsterdam Alderman in charge of housing issues. He acknowledged that it will deter many from renting their home out at all.

Patrons of the Boi Boi restaurant in Amsterdam had quite a shock during the dinner service on New Year's Day when a man allegedly started masturbating in front of the glass while shouting antisemitic insults in front of one of the cafe's windows. A stray alpaca was picked up by police working in the historic center of Haarlem late Tuesday night. The animal was captured , and it was determined to be in good condition.

A 14-year-old boy in Amsterdam was seriously injured in a New Year's Day fireworks accident that left him without a hand. The accident was caused by the premature blast of explosives that were bound together.

Two other boys, aged 10 and 11, also received facial injuries from the incident. All three were transported to an area hospital.

The accident happened just before 3:44 p.m. on the Willem Molengraaffstraat in the Slotermeer area of the city. Emergency services sent two ambulances to the seen along with a trauma team in a helicopter.

A man who was s on Friday afternoon after allegedly threatening people with a knife was identified as a 29-year-old man from Den Haag. The shooting happened in the Schiphol Plaza, the airport's primary entryway which also provides access to the train station below.

Three shots can be heard in amateur video recorded in the plaza.
