Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan officially stepped down from office on Monday, announcing his decision in a letter to the city’s residents.
The Netherlands' coastal provinces will face the season's first official autumn storm on Wednesday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The KNMI warns of wind gusts on the coast and the IJsselmeer of up to 90 kilometers per hour. Weerplaza forecasts winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour on the Wadden.

By Wednesday night Leeuwarden had the most rain, with 52.2 millimeters measured. Places like Grouw and Stavoren also got over 50 millimeters of rain. "Locally the total rainfall can climb up to 60 mm by [Thursday] morning", the weather agency said on Wednesday night.
Paraffin washed ashore on the beaches in Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland over the past days. The beaches will be cleaned up over the weekend, NOS reports.
Sunbathers can visit the beaches as usual, according to Rijkswaterstaat.
The paraffin washed ashore from Noordwijk to Zandvoort and from IJmuiden to Den Helder. It can only be cleaned up at low tide.
Residents of the province of Zeeland spent the least money on vacationing abroad last year, according to data platform Localfocus based on figures from Statistics Netherlands. The average expenditure per Zeeland resident was 697 euros per resident. Noord-Holland residents spent the most money, 902 euros per holiday, NU.nl reports.
Destinations also differed between the two provinces. Zeeland residents preferred to go to Spain. While Noord-Holland residents opted for more expensive holiday countries like Germany and France.
The number of vacation homes sold in the Netherlands increased by 20 percent last year, according to data the Dutch association of realtors NVM released on Monday. In 2015 the the number of holiday homes sold doubled, NU.nl reports.
According to NVM, the continuing trend can be attributed to the low interest rates. As savings yield hardly anything at the moment, more people choose to invest their money into a second home.
A 47-year-old man from Zandvoort was killed in a shooting in the parking lot of a Van der Valk hotel in Akersloot on Monday afternoon. The police found the victim in a delivery van, the police said in a statement
A 49-year-old man turned himself in at a police station a short time after the shooting. He was arrested.
The police are investigating what happened. A forensic team performed a trace evidence investigation at the scene.
Police in Amsterdam Noord fired a gunshot while trying to apprehend a man suspected of intentionally setting a fire in the cellar of a daycare facility while children were in attendance. Officers responded to reports of the fire at the Johanna Margaretha child care center on Wingerdweg at about 2 p.m. on Friday and found the alleged offender in the basement.
The children were already whisked away from the building by the daycare’s staff before first responders arrived on the scene. They were kept safe at a nearby school.
The Martinus College in Grootebroek, Noord-Holland was evacuated late on Wednesday morning after between 30 and 40 students and teachers became unwell. A strange smell left the people in the school feeling nauseous and dizzy. One student fainted, NOS reports.
The ill students and teachers were treated outside the school by a score of emergency services. One person started hyperventilating and was taken to hospital.
An object that crashed through a shed roof in the Noord-Holland town of Broek in Waterland in January, was identified as a meteorite, according to scientists at the Naturalis museum in Leiden. This is the 6th meteorite ever to be found in the Netherlands, NU.nl reports.
The meteorite crashed through the roof of a shed at the speed of a high speed train around 5:00 p.m. on January 11th, shortly after several dashcams recorded a fireball in the air.

At least eight people were injured when a car sped out of control in front of Amsterdam Centraal Station, crashing through a group of pedestrians before coming to a stop against a concrete entrance to the subway station below. The driver of the dark green or black Peugeot was taken into custody by police at the scene.
Two of those injured were seriously hurt, police said. The incident happened before 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Authorities in Zaandam arrested two teens in connection with the stabbing death of 16-year-old secondary student Nick Bood. The victim, from Assendelft, Noord-Holland, was stabbed on the A.F. Savornin Lohmanstraat in neighboring Zaandam around 11 p.m. on Saturday while visiting the city’s local nightlife area with his stepbrother.

Police in Amsterdam arrested eight suspects connected to a plot to excessively overcharge taxi passengers picked up at Schiphol Airport. In one case investigated by authorities, a Swedish man was ordered to pay 595 euros for a ride from the airport to Amsterdam city center, a taxi fare that normally costs between 40 and 60 euros.

Three archeologists found almost 90 sliver coins from the period 1542 to 1571 in a field in Westwoud, Noord-Holland. Almost all the coins show the head of Spanish King Philip II, who once reigned over the Netherlands, the Westfries Museum announced on Friday, AD reports.
Along with the coins, the remains of a container was found in which they were supposedly kept, the Museum said.
