A father and his two sons managed to wake up and quickly escape a raging house fire overnight in Oisterwijk. All three were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but there were no serious injuries, according to Omroep Brabant.

The fire was reported just after 4 a.m. on Friday. The alarm was quickly elevated to a medium-sized fire, bringing out firefighting crews and police from around the region to the house on Moergestelseweg, just east of Tilburg.

Meanwhile, the family rushed out of the home's backdoor in just their bathrobes, according to a local media outlet.

A ground stop was put in place Wednesday afternoon at Eindhoven Airport preventing all aircraft from taking off and landing at the second largest airport in the Netherlands. The problem, due to freezing fog, could continue through midnight, according to a bulletin released by Eurocontrol, the European organization for air traffic safety.

The weather was also causing problems at Schiphol Airport, and to a far lesser extent at Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

Two people suffered serious injuries when fireworks were detonated near a football cage in Den Bosch. Police said a mortar grenade exploded in their faces.

"Then, with heavily bloodied faces, they finally managed to reach a home in the area and rang the doorbell. The residents were severely shocked and subsequently alerted 1-1-2," police said.

The two male victims are 32 years of age. One is from Berlicum, and the other is from Den Bosch. Both had facial injuries, and were taken to the Eye Hospital in Rotterdam, where they were to undergo an operation on Tuesday.

Police in Eindhoven said they were looking for a group of boys as young as 12 for the unprovoked assault of a man walking near the Woensel shopping center last week. The victim, Bart Jansen, said he was viciously attacked because he is a homosexual.

Since the Wednesday attack, he said he has cried several times, wondering what he has done to deserve to be a target. "That people can hate you so much for who you are. That hurts a lot.”

Saskia Wempe, a member of Eindhoven's city council since 2018, has died. A member of the conservative VVD party, she entered politics six years ago and was in middle management at Spar Holding until last month.

Her death was announced by Eindhoven mayor John Jorritsma. He said her death followed repeated battles with cancer.

She was first diagnosed with the illness over five years ago, reported the Eindhovens Dagblad. Wempe twice went through treatment.

Two people were injured in a stabbing at an center for asylum seekers in Oisterwijk on Friday morning. One of the two victims was transported to an area hospital under police guard, a witness at the scene told broadcaster Omroep Brabant.

The other victim had a leg injury that was treated at the scene. The witness told the broadcaster there was a “large puddle of blood.”

The stabbing was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at the center on Kievitsblekweg in the Noord-Brabant town. The motive for the incident was still unknown a short time later.

A man was killed in an accident with a police car in Riethoven, Noord-Brabant during the early hours of Monday morning. He was driving a car stolen from Waalre around 15 minutes before the crash, the Oost-Brabant police said on Twitter.

According to the police, patrolling officers spotted the car in question shortly after receiving a report of the car theft and gave chase. When the police went around a bend on Hobbel, the stolen car was standing stationary in the middle of the road. The police officers could not prevent a collision. This happened at around 1:45 a.m.

Kroon, a major in a Dutch Army special forces unit who was knighted by Princess Beatrix when she was the country's queen, denied that he intentionally headbutted one officer.

Dutch banking institution Rabobank said it has no plans to dismantle its cash machines on a wide-scale basis after robbers made two separate attempts to use explosives to break into the bank's ATMs early Monday morning. Just last week, police said that other banks' cash machines would be targeted more frequently after ABN Amro decided to remove 470 of its own ATMs across the country.

Police in the Netherlands announced on Monday the arrest of a 25-year-old Rotterdam man in connection with the discovery of 2,019 kilograms of cocaine at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium. The arrest took place weeks ago on November 27 after the cocaine was found in a sea container by Belgian customs officials, Dutch police said.

The cocaine was found in a shipment of fertilizer that originated in Colombia. The container was destined for the Netherlands.

A soaking wet train passenger and two others suffering from symptoms of hypothermia prompted an emergency response to Venlo, Limburg. One man had fallen into water in Eindhoven, and was pulled out by two others, a spokesperson for the fire department told AD. All three men are from Tanzania, and were taken to an area hospital for medical care, the police said in a separate statement.

A suspicious package was found in the arrival hall of Eindhoven Airport on Monday morning. The Ministry of Defense's explosive removal department is at the scene to investigate, the Oost-Brabant police and the Koninklijke Marechaussee said on Twitter.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for airport security, confirmed the Defense experts' arrival at the airport at 10:57 a.m.

Part of the arrival hall is cordoned off to keep travelers at a safe distance.

Both men and women in the Netherlands have grown heavier and slightly taller since 1981, according to Statistics Netherlands' health survey. Between 1981 and 2018, men on average grew 3.8 centimeters taller and 9 kilograms heavier, while women grew 1.5 centimeters taller and 7 kilograms heavier.

That means that men are now an average of 2.3 kilograms heavier per centimeter of body height, and women 4.7 kilograms. According to the stats office, women became "fairly considerably" heavier in the periods 1990 to 2000 and 2010 to 2019, while their height hardly changed.

Police in Eindhoven on Thursday evening sent a team of heavily armed and masked officers into a packed and busy train as part of a search for suspect. Authorities were vague about the person of interest, saying only that it concerned an incident in Rotterdam, according to Omroep Brabant.

A possible explosion at a block of flats in Eindhoven has left residents shaken and concerned for their safety. Police told NL Times the apparent blast during the early morning hours on Saturday could have been caused by a heavy explosive, like a hand grenade or a Cobra-6 firework, but an initial investigation was inconclusive.
