No longer is the second day the day that most people give up. Only 857 didn’t reach the finish on day two and that’s a meager 2%. Much less than the usual 4%.
The fact that most people give up on the second day is no longer valid. The first time this didn’t happen was two years ago. The warm weather of this year was expected to bring back the tough image of the second day but the new trend is set.
Traditionally the Vierdaagse started at the third Tuesday of July. A total of 42.493 participants started at the four day march.
At 4.00 am Minister Edith Schippers gave the sign after which the fresh participants took off. Although usually people might find it a little bit early, the walkers were pleased that they could walk at least a few hours in the cold morning air. They knew that the mercury would hit the high twenties, so most people were well prepared for the heat.
The participants in the 97th edition of the Vierdaagse will face this year, in addition to the considerable distances they have to walk, another obstacle. During the coming days the temperature is probably going to be 26 or 27 degrees.
Participants of the Vierdaagse, which will start on Tuesday July 16, are advised to drink extra. Sun burn is also very likely so a good sun protection is advised. Because during the night the temperature can drop to 15 degrees, late night partiers are advised to bring a sweater.
The police is ready for the Vierdaagse, they reported on Thursday. For the security of the event all kinds of scenarios have been developed, such as for extreme weather. New this year is the Vierdaagsefeestenapp. The 97th edition of the march starts on July 16.
The app includes a bustle meter. Not only the police can see where the biggest crowds are, but also visitors can check where it is very busy. The police can send push messages to all phones with this app, to quickly and efficiently inform everybody.
