The eastern parts of the Netherlands woke up to a frost covered landscape on Wednesday morning, for the second time this month. The minimum dropped to -0.7 degrees in Twente. "That is quite exceptional", Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws.
Over 140 thousand homes in the Netherlands will flood during heavy rain showers. At least 76 thousand other buildings, such as schools and shops, are also at risk of major damage due to flooding, according to research by RTL Nieuws and consultancy and engineering firm Arcadis.
Time to get out the swim suits and sunscreen. Next week will be hot in the Netherlands, according to Buienradar. There's even a good chance of the first heatwave of the year.
"We speak of a heat wave when there are five days with 25 degrees of higher nationwide, of which there are also three days above 30 degrees", Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. According to her, there is a 30 to 40 percent chance of this happening next week.
Sunday was the first official spring day of the year in the Netherlands. That means that temperatures climbed to above 15 degrees at the KNMI weather station in De Bilt. The south of the country even saw temperatures above 18 degrees Celsius. The Netherlands can look forward to more spring like weather this week.
On average the first official spring day is only on March 16th. The usual temperatures for early February is around 5 or 6 degrees, Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. The earliest official spring day on record was on January 13th, 1993.
A large autumn storm will hit the Netherlands on Sunday, Buienradar expects. Wind gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour can be expected. "The storm also brings a ot of rain with it, so stay indoors with cake and soup", Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws.
"It seems we can prepare for wind force 8 or 9", Kroon said. "The chance that trees will fall over is greater, because they are all still in leaf because of the beautiful summer."
While the morning started out sunny in most of the Netherlands, thunderstorms are set to hit the country this afternoon. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country.
The Netherlands can look forward to warm and sunny weather next week. Some places may even see the first summer day of the year on Wednesday, with maximum temperatures above 25 degrees, Buienradar expects.
"The barbecue can be turned on and summer clothes taken out", Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws. "We can almost call it summer, with temperatures rising to locally 25 degrees in the interior from Wednesday! The sun shines brightly, so it's perfect weather to be outside."
Despite the autumn showers and clouds currently covering the Netherlands, the country can expect unusually mild weather later this week. Maximum temperatures around 7 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, will increase to around 15 degrees on Wednesday, according to RTL weatherman Nicolien Kroon.
"Normally it's eight degrees around this time of the year", Kroon said. "The predictions for the middle of the week are extremely mild with temperatures of 14 and 15 degrees."
Hurricane Maria is heading towards the Caribbean, but is currently expected to miss the Kingdom of the Netherlands islands, according to Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar. The strong winds and heavy rains the hurricane brings with it can still cause many problems on the islands, especially for Sint Maarten, which was devastated by Hurricane Irma a week and a half a go, RTL Nieuws reports.
Despite the fact that winter is upon the Netherlands, and temperatures are dropping, this autumn is expected to be the second warmest ever, forecasts Nicolien Kroon from RTL.
