Public transportation in the Netherlands was seriously disrupted Thursday morning after regional transit workers walked off the job at 4 a.m. in a one-day strike. The labour action is meant to call attention to what the workers have called unreasonable work pressure, and a pay raise that is capped 40 percent lower than what the bus drivers and train conductors wanted.

The planned action is because workers could not get guarantees to reduce job stress, and a proposed salary increase is smaller than demanded.

Roughly 75 percent of adult-aged men in the Netherlands say they have never engaged in any form of sexual misconduct, a new survey conducted by newspaper AD reveals. Over 300 men were questioned in the survey, conducted as six weeks of high profile reporting has detailed sexual abuse and harassment allegations against prominent international and Dutch figures.

About one of every seven countered said they could not be sure if they did or did not cross a boundary, answering, “I can not be the judge of that.”

Police in the Netherlands arrested a 38-year-old Syrian man on allegations of involvement in a terrorist act, the public prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday. The arrest of the unnamed man is the third terrorism-related arrest in the Netherlands in a week, all three of which were in the Limburg province.

The Netherlands will provide the first space outside the United States to test engines for the Joint Strike Fighter jet programme, the Dutch Defense ministry announced on Thursday. A test facility will be built in Woensdrecht, Noord-Brabant with equipment, spare parts and training provided by engine manufactuer Pratt & Whitney.

The ministry, Noord-Brabant as well as the Economic Affairs ministry will invest in a maintenance workshop and testing ground. It is expected to provide work for specialists through 2049, the Defense ministry stated.

ING Netherlands announced its appointment of Vincent van den Boogert as its new CEO. He takes over for Nick Jue, who was named CEO of ING’s Germany operations, pending regulatory approval there.

Boogert, 46, is currently on the bank’s board, overseeing customer interfacing at the Dutch bank. He is a long-time veteran at the bank, having started there in 1995. He has worked for the bank in a variety of management roles in the Netherlands and Turkey.

"What a night it seems to be," Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte said to begin his election victory speech Wednesday night. "For the third time in a row the VVD is the largest party in the national elections," he added.

"It is also a night wherein the Netherlands, after Brexit, after Trump, has said 'no" to populism," he said. He praised the massive voter turnout of over 81 percent, a stark contrast to the comparatively low turnout in the UK for the Brexit referendum and in the U.S. for the 2016 general election there.

An exit poll sampling voters in the 2017 Netherlands parliamentary election shows the conservative party of Prime Minister Mark Rutte taking 31 seats in the Lower House, down from its current 41 seats. The coalition partner of Rutte's VVD, the Labour party (PvdA), showed a bigger than expected drop, losing 29 of its 38 seats, the Ipsos exit poll showed.

He had a similar opinion of the November 8 election in the United States.

At least six people were killed and eight others injured in an attack on a mosque during evening prayer in the Canadian city of Quebec on Sunday evening. Dutch Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs condemns the attack and expressed his sympathies to the victims and their loved ones. 

"I condemn the terrorist attack in Canada in the strongest terms", the Dutch Minister said on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Twitter account. "I sympathize with the victims of the attack on a mosque in Canada. Discrimination, exclusion and hate are never acceptable."

The Dutch authorities intercepted a total of 47,200 counterfeit euro bank notes in 2016, a decrease of 29 percent compared to 2015, the Dutch central bank DNB announced on Friday. Just below 75 percent of the counterfeit notes were 50 euro notes, NU.nl reports.
