The replacement of the National Police's digital archive system cost the government millions of euros more than expected, newspaper AD reports based on its own research. The system, called Documentum, was installed in 2013 and is still not working properly.

The police completely underestimated the cost and effort involved in installing and implementing the new system, according to the newspaper. In 2014 a police official already stated that the "software is more complex than previously estimated". The police's IT personnel do not understand how the digitial archive works.

National Police Chief Erik Akerboom wants the police force to be more diverse. For that reason 13 extra positions will be created in the police leadership this year for "diverse" talent, he said in an interview with the Volkskrant.

"The police must be recognizable to everyone. The outside world changed enormously, and the police is not changing with it", Akerboom said. He wants the culture in the police to change quickly.

Registered common crimes in the Netherlands, including burglaries, violence and theft, dropped by 20 percent between 2012 and 2016, according to Statistics Netherlands on Wednesday. Crime experienced by Dutch, registered in the national victimization survey Safety Monitor, reduced by 13 percent. People living in the Netherlands also feel safer, ANP reports.

Following a number of major information leaks and integrity violation cases in the Dutch police and other investigative agencies, a major investigation was launched into corruption at the police, the Telegraaf reports. The investigation was launched in September and is being performed by the University of Maastricht, the Open University and Avans Hogeschool.

Faris K., the police officer in the Safety and Security Service, was previously also suspected of integrity violations, newspaper AD reports. Faris K. was investigated for leaking police information while he worked at the Utrecht police, colleagues of the suspected cop told the newspaper. The outcome of that investigation is unclear.

There is no reason to believe that an information leak discovered in the Safety and Security Service of the police put any of the people under the Service's protection in danger, Minister Stef Blok of Security and Justice wrote to parliament on Wednesday. To reduce the number of casualties on Dutch roads, it is necessary to equip all cars with breathalyzers, speed limiters and a device that makes it impossible to use a cellphone while driving, National Police commissioner Egbert-Jan van Hasselt said to the Telegraaf.

According to the commissioner, motorists' behavior is getting worse and worse. "Distraction, alcohol and speeding in traffic are increasingly often the cause of accidents", Van Hasselt said to the newspaper. "I appeal to politicians to work on this."

Dutch authorities are increasingly concerned about dangerous fireworks used to usher in the New Year. 
"Experience show that more and more often extremely dangerous fireworks are lit", Hague Mayor Jozias van Aartsen said in a press statement, according to the Volkskrant.

He calls on all involved to not wait until autumn to start the fireworks discussion in politics and society. "The damage and injuries caused by these dangerous fireworks are no longer proportional to the entertainment they provide", the Hague mayor said.

The Dutch police want parents to be more alert in checking their children and their children's friends for illegal fireworks, Ad Nieuwdorp, fireworks expert at the National Police, said to AD. He called parents "naive" when it comes to dangerous fireworks.

"A cobra is just a grenade and totally not comparable to the strikers and astronauts they themselves lit as a teenager" Nieuwdorp said to the newspaper. He added that a legal soft banger going off in a hand will leave a child with burns, an illegal banger wil blow the hand off.

The Dutch police will soon be equipped with cars that can drive up to 250 kilometers per hour, the Telegraaf reports based on tender documents from the police. With these 80 super fast cars, the police want to "take back control of the highway", according to the newspaper.

What make and model cars these will be is not clear yet.

This decision was made in consultation with Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice, sources in The Hague confirmed to NU.nl after reports in the Telegraaf.

The members of the police's Central Works Council (CWC) resigned on Monday night following an investigation that showed that they wasted considerable sums of money from the CWC budget, ANP reports.

The investigation revealed that a large part of the CWC's 1.6 million euro budget was spent on dinners ,parties, nights in hotels with champagne breakfast and hiring image coaches, among other things.

The role former Security and Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten played in majore irregularities in the National Police Central Work Council's expenses should also be a subject of investigation, according to opposition parties SP, CDA, PVV, D66 and ChristenUnie, NOS reports.

The parties also want former Police Chief Gerard Bouman to be suspended immediately and want him to not play any roll with the police until the investigation against him is done. Bouman is currently an adviser for the police.
