Development Aid Minister Lilianne Ploumen's family planning fund raised 292 million euros in donations from around 60 countries, she announced on Monday night, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Dutch minister established the fund early this year to counteract Donald Trump and the American government's anti-abortion policies and decision to pull 600 million dollars in annual funding for family planning in third world countries.

The Dutch government made money available to provide emergency relief to the Rohingya population fleeing from Myanmar, Minister Lilianne Ploumen of Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade announced at her meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Amsterdam on Thursday.

"The images on TV say enough. Anxious fathers and mothers fleeing with their children in overcrowded boats. With so much human suffering, we can not remain insensitive and ignore the call of aid organizations to do more", Ploumen said.

The municipality of Amsterdam calls on the Dutch government to admonish Russia about camps in Chechnya in which homosexual men are being locked up, alderman Eric van der Burg said at a protest against these camps at the gay monument in the Dutch capital on Wednesday. On Monday he scrapped funding to organizations that help with family planning and offer safe abortions in developing countries. Unlike other budgets, the budget for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation does not include any performance information. It is therefore impossible to determine whether the 4.1 billion euros the Netherlands spends on an annual basis to help the poorest people in the world is spent effectively and it is unclear what exactly is achieved with that money.
